Faith Obliterator: Cant really say right now. Maybe the fact that Nintendo released so few VC games this year compared to other years.

Side note: I'd really like to know how many of the COD haters here actually own COD. I'm guessing you don't, and with that said, why do the sales even bother you? Have they effected your life? Do you stay in bed days on end knowing that the game is actually on sale? Do you feel pain that some people actually enjoy playing this game? Hating a game based on sales is JUST as dumb as so-called gamers that complain constantly that the Wii has no games, collect dusts, and is just shovelware because it's such a pointless thing to be upset about.

Why the complaining about the sales? It's just nerds e-raging against whatever is popular. They like to to think it makes them 3DGY. Yes, in all caps and with a 3 (even edgier because it breaks the rules of grammar!). When something else super popular appears that Nintendo didn't make they'll move on to that.

More like it's sad for me personally to see gaming as a whole being represented by games such as Call of Duty and the industry moving in the direction of FPS blockbusters, 'cause that's what makes money.
Most Hyped: Kirby's Epic Yarn (I still haven't played it... but every gameplay video and trailer I watch makes me realize it's one of the most adorable and creative things I've seen in years.)
Unexpected Treat: Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (Tons of fun and I still play it with my friends. I knew it'd be good, but not that good, and when my friend showed up with it randomly at my door one day giving it to me as a gift for no apparent reason, well, that just made it all the sweeter.)
Faith Obliterater: Super Mario All-Stars Wii Limited Edition (The laziest thing I've seen perhaps in my entire gaming career, and a SHAMEFUL mark on the gaming company I hold highest.)
World Rocker: BIT. TRIP RUNNER (It rocked my world, and it liked it... I was left on the floor in pain, and in a weird way... I liked it, too.)
GOTY: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Built on the good stuff, dropped the not as good stuff, and added a TON of awesomely fun, inventive new bits... everything a sequel and a game should be.)

You and I will just have to choose to see the industry differently. COD is COD and it will always sell, but really, I play it, I like playing it with my friends and seeing nothing wrong with it AND it hasn't stopped me from playing Epic Mickey, Kirby, etc on the Wii. Plus, do you think the Mario's of the world are going to stop because Battlefield or COD sell like gangbusters? No.
I think, with all due respect, that you have a ting of jade in those glasses you're seeing the industry through and although you may not like FPS', and that's fine, there are some great ones out there like the System/Bioshock series, etc. I, personally, see the industry latching on tot he 3rd person action games like Mass Effect, Uncharted, Alan Wake etc which is fine for me. I love them, never been so emotionally involved in games ever...they're amazing, but that's my taste, but as long as gamers are still getting their Zelda, DK, Kirby, etc, I'm not sure where the complaints are justified, IMO.
I mean, honestly, we've heard the same FPS argument since the day Doom dropped on the world and games of every genre have still been made, they've still be great, and are still available since that day. FPS' aren't going to destroy any other genre, there will always be something out there for almost every taste, and in the end, gamers need to stop being so down and negative about things in gaming they don't agree with and just start being happy again. It makes me sort of sad that it seems console wars and the genre hating have made the gaming community turn on itself.
In the end, genre's in gaming are all cyclical. We've seen the platformer days come and go and come again, we've seen FPS' light the world on fire, then go, then come back...RPG's, Puzzlers, etc...In the end, I thought last year was one of the best years in gaming ever with the PS3 and Wii have amazing line ups and the 360 holding steady...since I have all three, I was a very happy gamer.
Most hyped: Tatsunoko vs Capcom or Super Mario Galaxy 2
Unexpected treat: Monster Hunter Tri Demo (The full game was expected bliss after that)
Faith-obliteration: Sonic 4 (Although it wasn't bad, 2010 was just a really good year)
World-rocker: Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors (Probably the best told, most well written story in a video game ever)
I'm playing 999 right now! And although I've never been a huge fan of reading so much in my games, I can't put this down. I'm taking a small step back from you and I'm not going to call it the best ever, but I think it was one of my top 5 stories of the year.
@J+Bitties Yes, we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. I do not question that many blockbuster FPSes are of high quality, but in most of them I see present morals and values that I believe to be wrong. Personally, I don't see how shoving glass in someone's mouth, for example, could be "fun." I understand that you feel differently which is why this discussion has arisen. Thanks for reading.
Most over-hyped: Red Dead Redemption Unexpected treat: Bayonetta Faith-obilterater: All the crappy, less than stellar sequels. World Rocker: Nothing. Year Maker: Nothing.
2010 looked strong on paper but after it panned out it seems it was filled with a lot of weak sequels. Take for instance Super mario galaxy 2, solid platformer right. But to me to stayed to close to the original, if you played the first you played this one. And it's the inability to stand own it's own two feet and get it's own identity that makes it fail...no matter how many mechanics it finely tuned.
The same can be applied to Donkey Kong Country Returns. After all this wait and hype, we get a solid game that felt much more like a remake than a sequel. They played it too safe and too close to the chest, it functioned as a nice trip down memory lane. But if I want a great platformer with DK and nostalgic value I'll play the original games. The best part about this game is what they brought over from the originals, the mechanics, the music, and levels. But how many times can I do the same thing, and how many times does DK need to have his banana's stolen? Is there nothing else worth fighting for in his world than a fruit?
Other M failed to meet expectations and had an identity crisis. It couldn't decide if it wanted to be for casual or hardcore fans. It had all the metroid elements yet didn't feel like Metroid. Along with the ruining the Samus character.
The story in Epic Mickey is good, but the broken camera and stubborn gameplay choices hinder it. I feel like I'm playing Gex on the Playstation reskinned as Mickey.
Red Dead Redemption is overhyped. It's basically a GTA clone in the wild west. Enslaved failed to me expectations. Alan Wake was good, but the writing and hokey dialogue hurt.
God of War 3 was the same game except with a new coat of paint. I've played this game before, and it wasn't worth $60 to play the same game I need on the PS2 twice.
There wasn't much to like in 2010. I'm tired of shoddy sequels that are afraid to venture too far from the formula and stand on their own feet. More of the same can be very tiresome. We need more original IP's that aren't afraid to be different.
Send me the best you've got. Send me your strongest machines. The fight my brother fought, here, now, will end with me.

DS - Dragon Quest IX Wii - Donkey Kong Country Returns (I would pick the most obvious one here Super Mario Galaxy 2, but I haven't played much of it yet) Wiiware - Cave Story DSiware - Shantae On my phone - AngryBirds PC - haven't played much PC game, but I did do beta testing for StarCraft II and loved it, so that will be my pick
Short version: "Made" - Tatsunoko vs Capcom Unexpected treat - see above. Faith lost (not really, but disappointing) - Metroid Other M World Rocked - TvC
Longer version: The game that "made" my 2010 was right at the beginning of the New Year - Tatsunoko vs. Capcom - my favorite game on the Wii to date. I've played it more than any other Wii game I currently own, which is more than a dozen. Second for 2010 would have to be Galaxy 2 - excellent follow up to Galaxy, very entertaining and maybe Mario's best platformer outing yet. Third would be Picross 3D, which is a wonderful puzzler.
And while I'm at it, the biggest letdown of 2010 would be Metroid Other M. Such prettiness, such potential, all squandered by linear gameplay and excessive, poorly told, story.
@JBitties.... I'm a big FPS fanatic, and Ive logged over 600hrs into Modern Warfare 2. Black Ops (even though I'm wearing a Black Ops shirt right now) is not a good game on PS3. Its extremely buggy and all the weapons feel the same. It's almost too balanced, but even that can be handled as I'm a really good FPS gamer. What does indeed hurt the game is the constant lag and connection errors. Me and a few of my family spent over and hour just trying to get partied up last week, and finally got all of us pulled into a match together as one would always get kicked out, and then of course it reconnected host like 3 times and eventually dropped the game completely, in the process freezing my PS3 completely. That kind of problem is happening all day long everyday on the PS3 and imo renders the game as not good, it is still just plagued by too many problems, and it's mainly all because for some reason they think they are above Closed/Open Betas!
Ive got to add Need for Speed Hot Pursuit to my list as I finally got it and its one of the best racers on the market.
