Wait, what? Did you even read the first post that provided a fair argument against the the topic despite not really meaning to? Maybe there is something I am missing...

When i saw the thread title, i thought it was going to be complaints about Red Dead or Gun, at which point i would have thrown tomatoes at you. Killer tomatoes.

Otaku just likes to jump at any opportunity to prove he's the most l33t kind of wapanese. This was just another outlet - he didn't need to read any of the thread to use it.

I'm tired of depressing, drab, bloody and colorless games like Red Dead Redemption, Resident Evil, BioShock, Dead Frontier and Mafia.

I'm also weary of horrible browser based games like DDTank, Dragon Fable, War of Legends, Travians although I still don't mind descent ones like Runescape, SeaFight and Bang Howdy.

Still, I don't think there is a famine for good games. We still have good games such as Pirates of the Caribbean Online, Final Fantasy, Dragon Nest, LEGO Universe, Manga Fighter, LittleBigPlanet The Legend of Zelda, Halo Wars, Final Fantasy XIV, Star Wars The Old Republic and much more.

The only problem with the video game industry is the lack of creativity and imagination.

If this was an isolated case then ok, but all you ever do is sprout rhetoric about how awesome Japan is and how everything else pales and how an entire industry, featuring thousands of people, millions of dollars and a lot of great games, sucks, simply because it's not Japanese.

Gun was awesome and a lot of fun. It was never really noticed though...

Before Reading The Main Post:

Are the IDEAS of most Western video games boring? I'm inclined to say yes.

Are Western video games boring? That's a pretty broad question that, if the community of NL hasn't already illustrated enough, appears to be a big, fat no.

After Reading The Main Post:

Umm...yeaaaah...I think I'll just let the NL community fight this battle for me.

Cave Story is Japanese.

Seriously? I thought it was developed by western developers [facepalms]. Oh well, there is Fable, Mass Effect, and a ton of other great western games out there.

My favorite part is that a long post titled "Western Games are Boring" makes no case at all about Western games being boring.

Yes, this. I see where the topic poster was coming from, but it's not like Japanese developers aren't franchise crazy as well. The big sellers in Japan aren't fresh, niche games; they're Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, Mario--big name blockbuster franchises. There's just as many exciting ideas coming from the west as there are in Japan, looking at the indie scene.

And yet it's the Japanese developers that are crying out that their industry is mired with creativity-stifling working conditions. (well, one certain ex-Capcom dude, anyway).

Ahhh Keji Inafune. Mega Man just won't be the same without him.

That's probably a good thing considering Mega Man games have been mediocre for a long time now (or just 8-bit cash-ins). A fresh start will do the character good.

Some of the most original and innovative games (and some of my favorites) are Western. Many of my favorite games that fit this "creativity" and "innovation" criteria are Western (Im going to include European developers as this seems to be relative to Japan) Independently made games such as Braid, And Yet It Moves, World of Goo, Papa Sangre, etc. And while franchises can get rather stale (Madden for example) when iterations are spaced too closely, it is nice to have big name IPs in which you can always expect high quality (for the most part) and see a formula, universe, character, or anything else you might find entertaining be improved on and added to. I absolutely loved Professor Layton's first adventure and was extremely happy when they were continuing the saga, for example. But I always have time to try something completely new.

It is quite ignorant to say the Japanese do not rely on extended franchises, as they do. Quite a bit, in fact. And there is always new IPs coming from both sides no matter what. And if that is not good enough for you, then Im quite sorry that the game industry doesn't offer you enough of what you want. Maybe you should try making some money off of your own innovative games. And believe me, this can be very hard to pull off

Sure, some Japanese developers tend to add a distinctive charm to their games, but that does not mean Western games can be good in their own right.

MM9 and MM10 actually 'are' fresh in this 3D polygonal craze. Who would of thought that going back to the basics would of been this awesome?

Well, a lot of people already realised this and especially in this generation.

If anything, MM9 and 10 seem like Capcom's reaction to how successful these sorts of games have been in recent years. The 3D polygonal "craze" ended several years ago when people figured that not all games look or play better in 3D.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but they're darned great reactions.

Yeah. I wasn't implying they were bad, but they may not have happened if indie and retro titles hadn't started gaining popularity.
