I'm not sure I'd buy it because my PC runs games great, even in HD. It seems as though the console would be expensive, but anyone who is willing to pay for an expensive console would probably have a good PC already. Unless Valve makes the Steam Box very affordable.
I was going to post this myself when I saw the story rapidly make it's way on the net on Friday evening, but I had to think about and digest it. Now that I have there are few things that really need to be answered by Valve (in my point of view) if they want to compete head to head with the PS3, 360 and eventually with the Wii U (if it is still going to be called that). First of all this Steam Box needs to be reasonably priced, there is not incentive for me to go out and buy this for $800 while I can easily get a PS3 for considerably less price which will give me access for most of what Steam has. Second it needs to boot into Steam and Steam only no windows. This is needs to be the only feature, I don't want access Firefox or launch the Windows Music Player etc. this needs to be end user box and that is it. If Valve can meet these, then here take my money and welcome to the console wars you PC maker.

If it's like that then I rather just build my own PC and have Steam in big theater mode and sallow my pride and use a 360 controller for my gaming need.
Well, for me, I'd love for it to be easy to upgrade PC components. Always wanted a system where you just swap out cartridges to upgrade it's "graphics" card so the game runs smoothly- not really high settings, but PC games for the most part require higher and higher requirements every few months. So it being streamlined would be a definite plus.
I'm not interested at this point. I like being able to sell or trade my old games when I don't want them anymore.
Better get trade happy as this won't last real long, Developers and publishers are really unhappy with game retailers. Game and Gamestation are rumoured to be nearly bankrupt and EA won't give them ME3 stock on credit. We are going to see more and more anti-used campaigns (like the online pass) from publishers.
Doesn't surprise me after all OnLive has had a console for awhile now.
Really its no different than buying a laptop or tower and hooking it up to a 42" tv. The only thing though is it will only be used for Steam where as if you hook a tower or laptop to a tv it could do so much more than just play games.

Even if this were the only way I could get my Left 4 Dead fix, I stil wouldn't buy it (and believe you me, that's saying a LOT). I'm splitting my gaming time between my PC, 3DS, Vita, PS3, my phone, Wii (har har, not really), and my Xbox. already.

Been a while since any news on this and the rumour seemed to die down; but apparently valve are now actively recruiting hardware experts; source here not sure if it actually means a console is on the way at some point from them but still hope so.
