Steam is coming to a new operating system

As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the
environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself.
SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.
It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

Living room & Steam

Finally, you don’t have to give up your favorite games, your online friends, and all the Steam features you love just to play on the big screen. SteamOS, running on any living room machine, will provide access to the best games and user-generated content available.

Fast forward

In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and we’re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level. Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases.

Cooperating system

Steam is not a one-way content broadcast channel, it’s a collaborative many-to-many entertainment platform, in which each participant is a multiplier of the experience for everyone else. With SteamOS, “openness” means that the hardware industry can iterate in the living room at a much faster pace than they’ve been able to. Content creators can connect directly to their customers. Users can alter or replace any part of the software or hardware they want. Gamers are empowered to join in the creation of the games they love. SteamOS will continue to evolve, but will remain an environment designed to foster these kinds of innovation.

Sound Nice. Might just be the next gen console to beat. Still going to buy an Xbox One and a ii U but this could be an awesome way to make a cheap PC only gaming box. Nice to steam transitioning to become a fourth player in the business

Point learned from Sony_70's post: Post the necessary info for people to read, not just the link.
LoL, to think that people would read it for themselves from the actual website.

I'm pretty interested in this OS and their Steam box. I'm a Mac user, but I've bought so many cheap Windows games in Steam Sales over the last year or so that I was thinking it might be time to get a cheap Windows laptop, but this would be perfect.

Why don't you just run parallels or a VM.

I think a descriptive link with a summary is actually prefered, but I suppose posting excerpts like that is okay since he's been doing it like that for quite some time now. I know it's definitely bad to just quote the whole article, though, since I've been reprimanded for that once or twice, under the context that it takes away hits from those sites. Just wanted to let you know.

We can't merge topics yet, but I'll make this one the main topic (since sony_70 has the full announcement posted) for Steam's announcements. Carry on

I think it's worth reading between the lines. They don't have to release a piece of hardware in the same way that Microsoft doesn't have to release hardware for Windows and Google doesn't have to release hardware for Android. They put the software out there and get the hardware people to make the hardware. I wouldn't be surprised if they also do a "SteamBox" of their own to kick it off but if this works the "preferred" option would probably be to buy the "SteamBox" made by Samsung, Acer, HP or Dell.

Plus if you look at the announcement site countdown there are three circles containing symbols:
o : was this, announced today. Lets assume that the 'o' represents their OS
[o ] : this is two days away. If the 'o' is the OS then this is the OS in a box.... interesting ey?
o+o : third one, presumably something about connectivity. You'd assume given it's last it will be the biggest. hmm

While I think your right where the incentive for other oems to make SteamOS hardware if they already don't touch Linux. Even with Android and Windows with a variety of oems and form factors the best devices on both platforms are Nexus and Surface.

@Sony_70
But they didn't have to. Windows was doing just fine before the surface (if anything "touch screen windows" has hurt their image) and while the Nexus was the catalyst for Android it's not the product that ended up in the pockets of most Android users. If you were going to go out and buy a Windows or Android based device from a consumer electronics retailer chances are you'd end up getting something made by Samsung.

[edit]
thinking about this topic.... all I can say is I'm glad I have Cat6 network cables running through the walls. Decent gaming PC + good LAN infrastructure + game streaming box. If this goes the way I expect I'll have absolutely no need for a gaming console that doesn't have Nintendo exclusives anymore.

I know I was just going with preferred option in the sense to get the optimal experience. My biggest concern is how does Valve show this off and get consumers interested. The reason I plan to buy an Xbox One and a Wii U is for Halo and Zelda but Valve has no real franhcises or exclusives.

Half-life, portal, counter-strike and left 4 dead are pretty popular franchises. I wouldn't be surprised if any of them will come in a new version before launch. Most of them are not my cup of tea, but I have played most of them with friends anyway.

Another thing I see is that it will run circles around the other consoles when it comes to applications such as emulators and mediacenters. It will also have over 300 games at launch.

Will these things be sufficient to carve out a piece of the console cake? I have no idea, but I can see the potential in it.
