@supernianmage1 - seeing as how the 360 graphics are better than PS3, I wouldn't worry.

@shingi_70 - these are in no way, shape or form mascots. One is a 'masot' for a game series, not a business, or a console. The last thing Microsoft would want is to identify the entire Xbox lines with the character only. Sackboy is an even worse example - he's the character of only the LBP games. LBP wasn't on any other platform before PS3 as far as I know, so to suggest that this is a mascot of Sony is laughable. Kratos would be a better example. They have franchises.

But none are mascots like Super Mario Bros. Samus or Zelda aren't mascots either. It's Mario and Luigi (and Yoshi and Bowser and Princess Peach...) who are mascots. That is far larger than any competitors. It's like Mickey Mouse (and Minnie, Goofy and Pluto...) is the mascot of Disney. Not Toy Story characters or Rapunzel or Nemo. Mascots are larger than life in the sense that they're truly household names around the world and present the face of the Company. You know how Mario and Luigi jump around when you download games from WiiWare and VC? You won't see sackboy or Master Chief doing that and you won't see the full array of merchandise for them either.

Actually the Halo series is pretty much Xbox's mascot. It's the series that defined the console back in 2001, and it still runs strong to this day. Halo is Microsoft's (and Bungie's) pride and joy, it's what made the Xbox such a big success. Halo is Microsoft's "Mario".

As for Sony, well they have God of War and Ratchet and Clank. But the PS3's big title is undoubtedly Uncharted, it's a series that defines the PS3.

Wow so that's sackboy. A little stuffed doll with a zipper on his belly. How original.

@ shingi_70
Samus is way cooler than Ripley.
Her adventures are much more memorable than those dull Alien movies.

Don't be so quick to judge based on appearances. Go play LittleBigPlanet, it's one of the most charming and unique platformers I've played in years.

And the Alien movies (well the first 2 anyway) set the benchmark for horror cinema. The original "Alien" (the 1979 one made by Ridley Scott) practically created the whole sci-fi horror genre, and did it beautifully. "Aliens" (the 2nd one made by James Cameron) was more action and special effects, but it was a hallmark of 1980's cinema (along with Cameron's Terminator 2, which brought CG visual effects to mainstream audiences).

I'm a big movie nerd.

I was thinking God of war. Uncharted didn't get popular until #3. From what i understand Halo reach sold more than the first two uncharted games combined.

that and Naughty dog goes from franchise to the next and Sony doesn't really know how to keep franchises alive with new dev teams.

WAT!

Insomniac has stayed with the Ratchet and Clank series, and Sony Santa Monica has been the main team behind God of War since the first game.

"and Sony doesn't really know how to keep franchises alive with new dev teams."

You could say the same about Nintendo.

nintendo's franchises are all pretty done by the same dev teams.

Naughty dog made the three crash games and then the series fell off

Naughty Dog made three Jam games then it fell off.

Naughty Dog made three uncharted. now it could fall off.

Insomiac seems to be done with it as they're going muti-platform.

maybe its because Sony hasn't been marketing their games that much or this far into the generation i want something new.

Xbox Infinity to Launch in Late 2012

Xbox Infinity is the name of Microsoft’s next Xbox console. This has been confirmed to me, Michael Zoran (the one who is officially breaking this story), by several of my inside sources in the videogame industry. Last week I promised I would reveal the name of Microsoft’s next console on Thanksgiving – November, 24, 2011. I am pleased to report I have lived up to that promise and I would enjoy hearing your thoughts on the subject.

Last week I left my loyal readers with fact-based clues that would help reveal the name of the next Xbox. I will describe the clues I left and how they relate to the Xbox Infinity one at a time.

  • Xbox Loop is the name of the “target” development kits that Microsoft has sent to third-party companies such as EA, Ubisoft, and Activision. These development kits are only alpha-stage development kits. In other words, they are not based on actual hardware; however, they are based on the target specifications Microsoft expects the next Xbox to be based on.
  • The reason the word “Loop” is an important clue is because the “Loop” represents the sign of “Infinity.” Just take a look at the two “o” characters between the “L” and the “p.” You end up with “oo” – the sign of Infinity.
  • Microsoft has entered into contracts to make it so Comcast technology will play a larger role on Xbox Live. Take a look at what Comcast is in the process of marketing right now and what their long-term marketing plan talks about more than anything else. Comcast is focused on “Xfinity.” This focus on the letter “X” isn’t a coincidence! Microsoft, Kinect, Xbox Live, and the Xbox Infinity will all be working together in special ways with Comcast technology.

Like I said in the article I wrote last week, I have met several reliable people in the videogame industry over the last six years. Using screen names of mike_mgoblue, Kim_Naroz (Mike Zoran spelled backwards), Salarian_Scientist, Salarian_Chemist, John_Gamer, Thomas_Brooks, femaletuffy, PatTuffy, Krogan Battle Master Urdnot Wrex, Unbiased Technology Professor, and several others, I have actually acquired a very loyal fan base!

I literally have heard people on Xbox Live say things like “Hey, are you Kim Naroz” and “Are you PatTuffy.” And then we talk about how awesome it was that the stupid editors of a certain website didn’t realize it was me, Mike Zoran, the whole time (posting right under their noses), even though I posted using the name of Kim Naroz!

The reason why I’m telling you this is because I recently spoke to an Xbox 360 developer online. He asked me what I thought of the name Xbox Infinity. I told him it was awesome. I said the only thing I could think of that might work out with the same type of effectiveness would be the name “Xbox 365.” The name Xbox 365 would still “1up” the PS4, since it keeps the Xbox 360 brand going and ends with the number five. Also, the name Xbox 365 would be in agreement with the Office 365 software programs Microsoft is using online.

Let me know what you think by writing a comment below. Xbox Infinity is scheduled to be released in late 2012 in North America. The European launch is not scheduled until the spring of 2013.

I’d like to know what you think. Do you like the name Xbox Infinity? It’s a nice holiday weekend to share your thoughts. Don’t forget to make sure and watch the online preview of the new Mission Impossible movie on Xbox Live. If you watch that preview, it gives you the ability to unlock special features in Gears of War 3 if you beat the Campaign mode on Insane difficulty by Christmas. Today is an excellent day to celebrate valuable names and the quality of the code – some of which may be right under your nose without you knowing it!

I also found this: http://kotaku.com/5879202/sources-the-next-xbox-will-play-blu...

Sources: The Next Xbox Will Play Blu-Ray, May Not Play Used Games (And Will Introduce Kinect 2)

Microsoft will upgrade its disc technology for its next Xbox from DVDs to Blu-Ray discs, catching up to rival Sony, games industry sources tell Kotaku.

Sony's PlayStation 3 currently supports Blu-Ray, which can contain 25 or 50GB of data compared to DVD's 9GB.

But that disc detail could be far less impactful to the next generation of game consoles than the assertion I've heard from one reliable industry source that Microsoft intends to incorporate some sort of anti-used game system as part of their so-called Xbox 720.
It's not clear if that means that the system wouldn't play used games or how such a set-up would work. Obvious approaches—I'm theorizing here—like linking a copy of a game to a specific Xbox Live account could seemingly be foiled by used-game owners who would keep their system offline. My source wasn't sure how Microsoft intended to implement any anti-used game system in the new machine.

A push in any way by Microsoft against used games would likely be cheered from publishers sick of seeing retailers like GameStop crow about their revenues from the sale of used games. But it could potentially anger consumers who rely on buying cheaply-sold used games or even pass games to relatives or friends.

One source familiar with Microsoft's plans for the new Xbox said Microsoft plans to ship their new Xbox with a new version of its red-hot Kinect hands-free sensor system. The new Kinect would contain an on-board processor, a feature originally intended for the first Kinect. That processor would enable a new Kinect to more effectively detect users' motions.

I'm also hearing that Microsoft is interested in making a smaller controller for its new console.

And what of gaming site IGN's report that the machine could be six times more powerful than the Xbox 360? From some industry sources I'm hearing that that's the right ballpark and that Microsoft is estimating they might even get to 8x the Xbox 360. But another insider clarified that no one in the industry has development kits yet and that any talk about specs right now is still hypothetical.

[UPDATE: A Microsoft rep e-mailed me the following statement: "As an innovator we're always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of technology like we did with Kinect. We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers. Beyond that we don't comment on rumors or speculation."]

"Xbox 720" is being used as shorthand by reporters like me to refer to the next Xbox. It's not necessarily the name of the next device. Tech sites Semi Accurate and Fudzilla have reported that the first chips for 720 development kits are going into production, leading to a possible late 2013 release despite my earlier reporting which had pointed to 2014 as the year of the next Xbox and PlayStation.

Nintendo's next console, the Wii U, will go on sale later this year.
