Each console maker keeps their own 1st party mascot and the 3rd parties go multi-platform! There, utopia for all :3

Samus is way cooler than Ripley.
Her adventures are much more memorable than those dull Alien movies.

The 20% really won't be that noticeable between the two. In multi-platform games the extra power will probably be used for anti-aliasing and subtle improvements. It'll be the First Party Titles and the controllers that will really set them apart.
Besides, similar specs will mean that third party devs are more likely to develop for both consoles.

I just hope the PS4 isn't insanely ahead of the Wii U's graphics...

anywho not sure how this means nintendo will get massive third party support. the gamecube era was pretty close and nintendo got the shaft. but to be fair first party stuff was more important thencand nintendo used crappy optical disc format.

But I still think Nintendo is going to have a harder time becuase third parties simply don't like them and want to compete with nintendos first party stuff.

@supernianmage1 - seeing as how the 360 graphics are better than PS3, I wouldn't worry.

@shingi_70 - these are in no way, shape or form mascots. One is a 'masot' for a game series, not a business, or a console. The last thing Microsoft would want is to identify the entire Xbox lines with the character only. Sackboy is an even worse example - he's the character of only the LBP games. LBP wasn't on any other platform before PS3 as far as I know, so to suggest that this is a mascot of Sony is laughable. Kratos would be a better example. They have franchises.

But none are mascots like Super Mario Bros. Samus or Zelda aren't mascots either. It's Mario and Luigi (and Yoshi and Bowser and Princess Peach...) who are mascots. That is far larger than any competitors. It's like Mickey Mouse (and Minnie, Goofy and Pluto...) is the mascot of Disney. Not Toy Story characters or Rapunzel or Nemo. Mascots are larger than life in the sense that they're truly household names around the world and present the face of the Company. You know how Mario and Luigi jump around when you download games from WiiWare and VC? You won't see sackboy or Master Chief doing that and you won't see the full array of merchandise for them either.

Only the first Alien Sequel is any good. The rest are terrible.
Anyway back on topic. Back in the 16-bit days Nintendo had Mario and Sega had Sonic.
The third party games almost always went multiplatform and that's really how it should be.
One system shouldn't have such immense power that the others can't have the same games.
Nobody wants to be required to own several different consoles in order to play the games they want.
It gets way too expensive and it forces people to choose.
In a perfect world there'd be one system that plays any game but we know that's not gonna happen.
If only that were possible.

and maybe i should be more clear. By mascot i mean marques franchise. mascots in the Mario vein are pretty much gone.

yeah alien and aliens were the only good ones out of the series. promethous looks cool though.

but yeah game budgets are bigger and stuff. not my fault nintendo doesn't like to help third parties as much as the other guys.

I think Crash Bandicoot used to be Sony's mascot but do they even make those games anymore?
Other than that I don't really think they have one.
Basically any game except obviously the ones with Nintendo characters can be on Sony systems.

i wonder where these numbers are coming from considering that we don't know the wii u's power level yet, and even less is known about the new xbox. either way, if 20% is all the competition is going to have on wii u i'd say nintendo nailed it this time. i'll gladly give up 20% power to play a shooter with a wiimote.

No Link79, that is not true. Thrid party games back then were more often exclusive per system. Here are a few examples:

SNES / Genesis

Super CV IV & Dracula X / Castlevania: Bloodlines
Contra III / Hard Corps
Turtles In Time / Hyperstone Heist
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts / Ghouls 'n Ghosts

How about all those SNES games that were not ported to the Genesis? All of Square's games, Mega Man 7 and X, Final Fight 1-3, Demon's Crest etc.
