Topic: Trophies = Spoilers?

So i'm playing a game and I wanted to check out the trophies section of the game... the titles of the trophies told me what will happen in the next episodes basically.. so I feel like these were spoilers. Is that an accurate feeling or an exaggeration? Not that I mind that much, but do people look through the trophy list before they finish the game? Is it a norm to wait until you finish the game to look at the trophy section, and if that's the case why not unlock it until you really do beat the game?

So ends a saga older than time itself.

I hate that, and it just shows laziness by the developers when you "achieve" something you have to do for the story anyway... Unless it's something particularly funny or significant (like the Fratricide achievement in Portal). I think the descriptions should be hidden until the game is finished since yeah, they do spoil the story unless they're worded vaguely.

Achievements and trophies should really be used for special, well, achievements. Portal, again, has ones like reaching terminal velocity or jumping 300 feet - both of which aren't necessary but you can enjoy some extra time trying to unlock them. I like those types the best.

MY PERSONAL OPINION on trophies/achievements is that they are just excuses to artificially lengthen games and not give you anything for doing that specific thing.

@V8 Yeah, they're a way for lazy developers to add some extra game time without putting in more content.

Early games with achievement-like unlockables/lists used them mostly for fun though. The point was to acknowledge the player for achieving something special that they did outside of the requirements of the game - I suppose a bit like how you can unlock a timer in Cave Story to share Hell speedrun times, or you can get Super Sonic by collecting all the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 2. Not necessary and pretty tough to get, but a nice reward for your efforts. They were also good for boasting to friends too.

And now I realise that "achievements" are a replacement for what used to be unlockables. :/

Nowadays they're necessities on services like Xbox Live and PSN, and so they're usually a dead weight... especially when games simply don't have anything interesting to offer outside of their main story sequence. Also they don't reward you with anything - just a line of text or an icon on a profile page. Major disappointment compared to Super Sonic, for crying out loud. D:

@Sean007s: everyone else is discussing things in terms of developer laziness -- the only one bringing up 'losers' here is you, man. if you want to collect trophies, good for you.

Me, i'm kinda mixed on the topic -- on one hand, it's fun to try and unlock things on my own, not going by descriptions or clues or anything, if i know there's things available to unlock. on the other hand, if i'm only missing like a handful of things and i feel i've gone out of my way to try everything i possibly can, it's nice to know exactly what i need to do to fully complete the game. i generally don't look at the trophies until i've beaten the first playthrough just in case they do contain spoilers for content.

so I do not see why you made this thread dude.

because I didn't know and I wanted to ask. I didn't find the answer on the web.

Do not look at the trophies before you buy a game, there,I just solved your problem.

hmm, buy a game? I did buy the game first, I'm playing it. You confused me here.

thanks.. I shouldn't have looked I guess. I'm new to the thing and I thought anything I haven't done will be hidden. It also seems much more simple and mundane and boring to unlock everything if they tell you what to do (kill 500 enemies with X weapons....) so I thought everything will be hidden.

I put that in because someone was bound to say it,so I decided to put that in before wasting anytime.
Also there are people out there who think its for loser's.
That my friend is very insulting as that user could just have alot of games and not even be dedicated.

Again I put that in there so some moron doesn't start screaming it out on the top of their lungs "trophiez forz loserz".

@Swiket I was unaware of that. But when we're talking about the majority of games, what I' basically saying is proven to be correct.

@Sean007s I know they aren't for losers and they do give extra challenge to a game, but my main problem is that they just sit there doing nothing. It's not like you get a cool costume that proves that you've done a specific thing in a game. They just sit on your 360/PS3, notifying to anyone curios to check them out that you have spent an ungodly time playing a specific game just to get something that doesn't actually do anything.

1)Yes it is the norm. Has been since 2005 since the Xbox306 came out.
2)Its quite simply easy to search for a game with trophies that you may not even want and see how they work. Or go to wikipedia to read about them in an article.
3)If you feel spoiled by trophies,do not look at them before you buy a game so you WON'T be spoiled.
Do I have clarify myself on that last point? really?

1) ok... thank you. that's what i was asking.
2) you're missing what i'm saying. i was searching to see if trophies are known to be as spoilers.
3) do you mean "beat" instead of "buy"? because otherwise you're completely misunderstanding the situation.

@Sean007s: take it easy -- we don't know how long the OP has been playing games with trophies/achievements for or anything. he bought the game, was playing it, and accidentally wound up spoiled for what comes next by checking out the trophies. thus, he's asking if it's normal. there's no need to ridicule him over a lack of information... he'll know what to expect next time. there's no need to turn this into a scene.

I didn't say which game (although I might say it...) because I didn't want it spoiled further by someone. It's a game in episodes and you get a trophy when you beat every episode. The titles of the trophies for these episodes give away plot.

Sean007s wrote:

You are now making it out that all trophies given spoil the game but I have sorted that out.

Not at all. I was inquiring whether it's a common phenomenon that people are aware of not to check the trophies before beating the game, or is it ok and not that serious.

@Sean007s I guess you're sorta right. It really depends on the gamer/achievement.

To be honest I don't think it is normal. Most of the games I've played put ??? next to the trophy on the list if it's a spoiler. I guess the devs on this game you mentioned slipped up or as others have said were a bit lazy.

@Sean007s: i don't know what's gotten into you, but it is not your place to decide whether or not a thread is 'stupid'. the concept of trophies being spoilers or not and player reaction to such (as in 'is this normal, am i overreacting, or am i right to feel irritated that now i know what to expect next') has not been brought up within the past year in a thread all its own, not that i can recall anyway, and it deserves a chance to be explored. If you have a problem with this thread, there's plenty of other threads here on the Nintendo Life forums for you to choose from.

In short, if all you want to do is keep taking out your own irritation on the OP, do yourself a favor and don't.

Thanks! That's nice to know. I didn't know that they sometimes put up a warning, but I guess it's better to wait until you beat the game once like was previously suggested.

The only problem with that is that some trophies you can only get at certain points in the game and some are based on accumulating a certain amount of something and you won't know to do this if you haven't checked the trophy list.

@theblackdragon, thank you so much. I don't recall ever having such a warm and welcoming reaction from a moderator. Feel free to delete this post and any others to keep this on topic (I deleted what Sean007 just quoted but not in time).

@Luigi-La-Bouncy - so I'm damned if i do and damned if I don't.. it's true in this case too, in a way, because I already got rid of certain weapons that I need for some of these trophies apparently.. but then I don't think I'm really into unlocking the trophies. I was just curios to see my current trophies.
no offense, man, just trying to get the worst of it outta the latter portion of this thread so it can get back on track :3 -- TBD

so what do you do personally? do you check it every time? and did you ever encounter spoilers?

btw, I think there were a couple of ??? there. I guess like you say they slipped up, or thought that they weren't spoilers. Of course the name of the trophy is not 1:1 but it's enough to expose the plot..

@mnementh.... I hate to be late to the topic but I glanced in this thread and thought it was a trophy/achievment bashing thread a first and moved on. I myself am just shy of my 1250th trophy so I got a good bit of knowlege on the subject.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/index.php

There is your site for ALL your trophy needs and they do have Spoiler Warnings and/or ??? so as not to spoil the trophy.

I got really hooked on getting trophies at first, the Platinum Trophy of wich I have 5 now (nowhere near Stuffgamer1 and his Awesome 12 or 13 he has now, he is a beast I tell you ) can be so incredibly fun to achieve if implemented right, if implemented wrong just downright horribly infuriating. Dont let trophies ruin a game for you at all. I would recommend NOT looking at the trophy list at all on your first playthru on anything to really experience the game as it should be then if your still having fun go back and do a clean-up as most games allow for it now. There is also usually a playthrough on the Hardest Difficulty where you can go for the trophies as well.

Mirrors Edge really hit some trophies done right. Ex.... Play through the entire game without firing a shot from your gun. First of all this is how the game was designed to play. Run,jump, slide, hide, and fight to the end. Your a Runner and not a Shooter and the trophy was hella fun to achieve and you got the real feel of what the devs had in mind when creating the game, if it wasnt for the trophy I prob wouldnt have done it.

Bad trophies are just that.... Fetch Quest have become a Normal thing in most all games. Beat severly unbalanced gameplay on highest difficulty, etc. If its worth it to you man, go for it. For me... most game just simply arent worth it. Fallout 3 definately was, the more trophies you unlock its kinda like reading more and more into a beat sucking more and more out of the experience of being in the Capital Wasteland that IS Fallout 3.

In wrapping this up..... Trophies are FREE. They are well implemented and in the future if you pay for the Premium Service its rumored to get you Free stuff on PSN and Achievments already net you Free Stuff on X360. They are mainly a bragging right and nothing else. I love my little PSN Badge of Honor and all my trophies. Like I said its Free and Free things dont come by too much these days.
