Topic: Thoughts on Metroid: Other M?

So we all have our own thoughts on Metroid Other M. Some of us hate it. Some of us enjoyed the gameplay. Me I loved playing it since it was my first Metroid game, and I understand why people don't like it. I would also like to know what you think. Feel free to reply!

Other M was crappy
Pinball was bad
Super Metroid was amazing
Metroid Prime is rad

I liked it for the gameplay, but I totally get why people hate it for the story. And the point-at-the-super-well-hidden-object segments. And the reliance on bosses and lore from past games. Still fun, tho

The game got more crap than it deserved. It's not perfect, but I enjoyed Other M. It's definitely in my top 10 Wii games.

My biggest complaints would be the lack of Nunchuck controls (although I'm not 100% sure the game would've worked with an analog stick) and the scan sections.

Other M was the first Metroid Game i ever completed.
I liked the Gameplay a lot, but the Story wasn't that great.

Can't even remember, was it possible to skip cutscenes?

It's... an okay game. It certainly doesn't deserve the frothing hatred it gets (does any game?), but it was a bit underwhelming after the Prime series, and I guess that sort of thing makes people angry. That, and it thoroughly violates a lot of people's ideas of what Metroid should be about (being made by a Japanese developer instead of a Western one may have something to do with that).

Biggest problem with the story was Samus suddenly being traumatised at the mere sight of Ridley. Far too jarring after so many games of her blasting him to shreds without a second thought. You can't pull something like that and expect it to sit well with fans. Also, there was that "Deleter" subplot that kinda didn't go anywhere in the end.

I didn't regret buying it, but I did find it a bit forgettable. Or at least it would be forgettable if people would shut up about how much they hate it.

Hated the story and the First person segments but enjoyed the rest for the most part.

Finished it one day, forgot all about it the next.

It’s a terrible, average and occasionally good game wrap up in an untidy and inconsistent mess. The absolute worse thing about Metroid: Other M, however, is how Samus Aran is portrayed as an emotionally fragile and insecure character in stark contrast to her strong and confident persona from the previous titles.

And using the Wii remote sideways hurt my hands after fifteen-twenty minutes too.

I would genuinely have to be paid a decent sum of money to play through it all over again.

I've played through the whole game twice and I find it to be pretty enjoyable actually. It's not my absolute favourite Metroid game, but it's certainly better than Hunters or Federation Force.

I thought the gameplay was a lot of fun and was a happy medium between the classic 2D style and the Prime games. The story was pretty basic, but honestly I don't think it was such a horrible portrayal of Samus' character like people say. She's afraid of Ridley, which is understandable, and has respect for her old commander. Other than those 2 points she's just as badass as the previous games. It's not like she had much character development from other games, so we didn't really know her true feelings. You can't really say this is a bad portrayal when this is the first we've really seen some character development.

My biggest complaint of the game is the sections where you're forced to be in first person and scan a specific thing. Sometimes it took forever to find what you're supposed to be looking at.

@Zyrac Well, you could argue that Samus killed [read: completely destroyed] Ridley on Zebes, along with Mother Brain and the entire planet. Seeing Ridley again after that would shock anyone I think, since it would also imply that there's a chance Mother Brain, and even more importantly, the Metroids survived the destruction of Zebes. Maybe the flashback wasn't necessary, maybe the writers thought it added some shock value, I don't know. Didn't ruin the game for me though.

@Tsurii I think people are overreacting a bit, especially when it comes to Sakamoto. He worked on many great games, but he only gets mentioned these days when people talk about Other M (in a negative way). Reminds me of that Billy the bartender joke.

@Tsurii ''Better'' is subjective though. It's been a while since I played Other M, but since I'm playing through the Prime games again, I'll play through Other M too when I'm done with Prime 3. From what I remember last time I played the game, I didn't mind the story. It was there, it did some interesting things and I wasn't offended.

I really like it.

The ship lacked the vastness of the planets though but we didn't get some awesome thing, like in metroid fusion, in return.

Plays great, very nice atmosphere, liked the story. The only cutscene that didn't make sense was the annoying "confession time" one.

Great game.

any of y'all heard of PTSD?

great game. reception taken over by fanboys wanting their dudebro masculine samus to have feelings akin to a beige wall in a hospital with the inability to comprehend emotions

Not a Metroid fan but I remember enjoying the gameplay and especially the boss fights quite a lot. More than I enjoyed Prime 2 and 3 tbh. Couldn't stand any of my teammates, though, and in fact, had a hard time distinguishing any of them from one another. Don't remember the story whatsoever either so I could say it's really forgettable. Or it's because I have finished the game like seven years ago (Other M did come out 2010, right?), whatever you wanna believe.

Well hello strawman, how are you?

Sincerely, I hate this attitude so much. You know who was looking forward to this game more than nearly anyone, even after initial reviews came out? Me! You know who wanted this type of story more than most? Me! You know who was defending this game from reviews? Me! So I am so sick of this attitude that YOU DIDN'T GET IT, MAAAAAAAN. Yeah, I didn't because they did it wrong. It doesn't work! They could make this story good, but the writing made it bad! You know how I know that! BECAUSE THE STORY IS JUST FUSION! FUSION DID THIS, BUT BETTER! THEY DID THIS CORRECTLY ALREADY!

Also, I'm totally sensing all those emotions of Samus' dry, robotic acting. The lack of life reminds me perfectly of all time great, emotional performances. Walking Dead, what's that?! Same way as I totally get an unexplained PTSD plot in a plot that over-explained everything. That's certainly what happened!

Geez, if I wanted embarrassing whining about masculinity and PTSD, I'd just go to Tumblr. Go be miserable there instead.

For future reference, don't insult my intelligence just because you're angry people don't like your favorite Metroid fic. Thaaaaanks. : 3

(also for future reference, liking something doesn't mean you're required to make excuses for it, it's just a company making money from you, chill yo)

...so yeah, Other M's ok. Huge disappointment considering its top-tier quality since Super, but gameplay's alright, some of the bosses are cool. Story sucks but...I wasn't bored, so it is better than say...Vanquish's story.

Like others, I enjoyed the gameplay for the most part but didn't care for how the story played out. It doesn't deserve the massive hate it gets but after the Prime games (1 and 3 especially), it was a bit of a letdown.

I will say, I feel like from a gameplay perspective, I don't think they thought "3D Metroid" all the way through. Just in terms of how it was made, it was like they were trying to make I guess... a Mario 3D Land equivalent for the series, a 2d game in 3d. But they didn't think of...why 3d games are different? I mean, combat wise they kinda got it because they had the Ninja Gaiden devs, but otherwise...it was just kinda off. But for the most part it didn't bother me too much, since "not understanding that 3d games are different" describes quite a few games I like from the N64/Ps1 era. But I do feel Retro got it right the first time, in that they adapted and changed Metroid to make it work best with the change to 3D. Same reason why OOT had lock-on and other weird new features (and that was probably easier to do, simply because top-down is closer to 3d movement).
