@Octane 'provide a very important element of choice that can extend and enhance the experience in our games''.

Just like the element of choice of money on a pair of snake eyes on the Big 6 8 at the craps table. BF2 better come with a comped martini and massage.

I think wording is kind of broken. "Microtransactions" "DLC" There's story DLC that's really an expansion pack. Then there's "DLC" that's usually useless cosmetics....whale model junk that normal non-OCD humans would never actually want to buy. Then there's "microgransactions" that are usually required payments to buy or bypass actual gameplay. Look on PSN, half the sales are not on products or even cosmetics but currency. EA was the home of, on mobile, the car game that you had to pay real money for repairs between races. At that point why not just race real cars? They have resale value even as scrap. Unlike EA games. Activision has an actual patent for Destiny to matchmaker people against harder opponents to encourage them to buy in-game gear with real money, and then they matchmaker you easier to make it all worth it. It's bigger than EA. These aren't video games, they're an at-home casino at best, a scam at worst.

BF2 may have spoiled it for the industry. People are going to be watching and raising flags now. Yeah this year there will be more because these games have been in production for years. But it's high stakes. It's working for EA and Activision, they'll continue. But the thing with microtrans always online is it only works if you build a huge audience. Ubisoft lost, and lost BIG with this model. For Honor, The Crew, Ghost Recon: Wildlands. It's an unmitigated disaster, and all that dev money washes away if there's no community. It's a high risk model. EA will be EA. that's almost their niche now. They can reliably pull it off. Sadly, I fear for their better franchises. Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Jade Empire, Mirror's Edge. We may never see another.

@Dezzy You're right. Unfortunately that doesn't matter in this case, EA profits of games shipped, not sold to customers. It only means that stores will lower the price to get rid of the excessive stock sooner. And I can also imagine that plenty of copies were traded in, so there could be an abundance of used copies too.

Octane

Octane

@Dezzy Turns out it's actually a bit less than that. They shipped 7 million, not 9. WSJ got it wrong, somehow.

Net bookings for the quarter were $29 million
below our guidance, driven by lower-than-expected sales of Star Wars Battlefront II. For Q3, we
had expected to sell in about 8 million units, but we fell short of that by less than 1 million units.

@YummyHappyPills LOL

@Octane We don't know how successful digital sales are....but it's ALREADY being heavily discounted on sales. Of course with microtrans what do they care? But retailer pushback isn't their friend. It's worse. They can sweet talk consumers into forgetting for BF3. Retailers are going to demand answers and under-order next time. They won't take chances on hope, they want numbers. If they sell out, fine by them.

Actually I take back the former. It's a worse use of money than actual gambling. At least actual gambling you have a very real money making opportunity to multiply your investment substantially. In EA land your money only buys you.....an enema...

NEStalgia

Octane

@NEStalgia I should've said sold instead of shipped. Their numbers are digital sold + physical sold to retailers.

@Octane Don't even get me started on Capcom's DLC. I've offically spent over $120 on Street Fighter by now, and now that I don't have to save up for characters, I had to find out the hard way that the vast majority of character costumes can't even be bought with fight money! They're charging $4 for each of these things, and the only ones that are available in a collection are the worst of the lot! It's frustrating. So much for "you could earn everything just by playing the game." Unless there are unlock conditions I don't know about...

@Octane Wow....that actually IS pretty bad for them....

@Grumblevolcano Hmmm Drat, was hoping for something I didn't own already! (Maybe they'll add in a sale on Knack 2...) Still, I'll score a digital copy of a game I loved and nobody else did... It was just on the $5 flash sale so I suppose it was predictable.

Surprised they're going back to launch day for the freebies after being so "recent" with Mankind Divided in January.

As are Grand Kingdom and Rime. Oh, and Mugen Souls Z...yeah, nothing of note this time, but screw it, I'd take any of those over Knack...except maybe Exile's End...

I've heard RIME is decent on PS4. And almost all of the games are better than the random indie titles that often characterize PS+ releases.

Currently Playing: Advance Wars 1 + 2: Re- Boot Camp (NS)

Octane

@Ralizah RIME is okay.. It doesn't run great, but not as terrible as the Switch version. The puzzles aren't very deep. It's a more interactive version of Journey, but it relies a bit too much on games like Zelda, Journey and the Team ICO games I think. There's a lot of references it seems, or it's just a blatant rip-off at times, I don't know yet

Actually, Sony's been pretty good about this the past few months. Maybe they've learned that we can only handle one curveball a month?

'Coming next Spring' (..well, it'll be Spring in the Southern Hemisphere, I guess! ) ..still, I'm excited to dust off my chaps and polish up those spurs for another epic, gun-slinging adventure in the wicked-wicked-Wild-Wild-West!

If you listen very carefully, you can hear the yearly AAA winter franchises developers sobbing in the distance.
A hell of a lot of CoD fans are just gonna ignore it and buy this instead.
I know the dudebros. I know what they like. I've studied them in their habitat.

It's still coming "Next Spring" when during this summer they delay it to March 2019

@Octane

Just guessing. But the people I know who buy COD and FIFA every year, and then know almost nothing else about the games industry (aka dudebro), are also the people who buy every GTA game.

@Dezzy Maybe you're right, but Read Dead isn't GTA.
