Eh probably would say That Lost Odyssey was my favorite RPG this gen. Had a pretty decent story and great characters that weren't Emo or twelve years old. Played a lot like the PS2 Fogs which is probably why I liked it so much.

I enjoyed Lost Odyssey as well. I dunno though, Kaim always seemed emo to me. ::

That's an understatement, since it had barely any competition that wasn't a remake or delibrate throwback.

It's still true though

It's like saying "Heavy Metal Music" is the same as "Classical Music" because they share "Music" in the genre descriptor. The reality is that what links the two genres together is the barest minimum of a thread.

Calling "classical music" a genre of music is like calling "PlayStation games" a genre of video games. Kinda. Somehow. The analogy worked better in my head.

This, along with games like FFXIII, Dark Souls, Nier... Not to mention most good MH games released this generation. So yeah, this is definitely the golden age of RPGs.

I really liked Final Fantasy XII. I still actively play. Final Fantasy was my favorite RPG franchise until 13. I died a little inside after I tried that one. As for DS, I really liked Golden Sun Dark Dawn. I just picked up Titan Quest for the PC, and I'm really enjoying it.

I'm a fairly new gamer, starting with FF V Advance about seven years ago. Since I've played about half of the FF games and loved them all. I was always excited for the next installment. But, Final Fantasy 13 took out all the things I loved about Final Fantasy. An easy to learn battle system, customization and the non-linear design were all lost after the decision to add X-box to Square's console list. As much as I love Halo, Microsoft, you killed Final Fantasy.

FFXIII's development was mostly complete before the decision to 'port' (which is what the 360 version is) the game to the x360.

@Rudbydog - Final Fantasy XIII is just the natural evolution of the series, whether you like it or not. It's actually not too different from Final Fantasy 4 and X. It rips control from the players just like those games did. It's linear just like those games are. It abandons customization just like those games did. It's the same crap the series always pulls every time theres a new generation, and it's probably the same crap they'll pull nex gen. There's nothing new here. It's just that now people are actually complaining about it.

^ Know what's funny? IV (advance) and X happen to be my favorite FF's out of the one's I've played.

Maybe I'd enjoy XIII, lol.

I'm playing Final Fantasy XIII now. It's just alright. Not as bad as people make it out to be, though I wouldn't even mention it when discussing a "new golden age of RPGs." They made a lot of poor design decisions but I'm enjoying myself in the post-game once I finished the (awful) story. I like the battle system even though it is simplistic. The battle system made me miss series like Grandia and Mana even more. Everything flows smoothly in battle once you know what you are doing. However, I hate the characters in XIII (except Sazh), lol. Especially Lightning. Couldn't stand her as the "lead".

I don't know if I'm going to play XIII-2. Plus I hear they might make XIII-3 and that's just overboard in my opinion. Versus XIII is the game I really wanted from the start. I'm ready for Versus XIII or a brand new start with FFXV.

I've got the collector's edition of those games at home - unfortunately I was only 5 or 6 when we bought it, so I've only got vague memories of trying to figure out how to play the games with my dad. Fortunately we hung on to the games so I've kept them - I'll get back to them and play them properly one day!

EDIT: This is the one, though this isn't my copy:

More than anything else on this planet I miss the old Dungeons & Dragons (pen and paper game and cRPG) art.

Sigh.

You just started playing, didn't you?

No, I'm about 70+ hours in with all roles maxed and only need to grind some long guis for money and go back and 5-star some missions for my last two trophies. The battle system gets more simple as the game goes on in my opinion. The entire game was practically an auto-battle festival for me except the final mark, which was the only difficult battle in the game. The only real strategy is making paradigms and switching at the appropriate time. Summons were useless again, just like in FF12. The battle system is fun but it's no way complex or very deep.

Now the upgrade system is exceedingly tedious, grind-tastic, and complicated if you don't read up on it before you upgrade your gear.

Once you get Ruinga and its equivelants for other characters, all strategy in FFXIII goes to the wayside. <_<

I actually liked what they did with the summons, though. They were good in a pinch and made battles more interesting, IMO, yet weren't always the key to victory. I found summons to be too easy a strategy to rely on in pretty much every boss battle in the older games.

Also, I thought the story and characters were the thing FFXIII really got right. FFXIII-2 was a total flip of the coin, though. Great gameplay, but had a downright terrible story.

I didn't mind the story personally, but I agree that Square Enix improved the basic gameplay significantly in XIII-2

As much as I agree with you, I was mostly talking about turn based RPGs. Or JRPGs

But in Action RPGs I'd say Dragon's Dogma is my favorite this Gen. Those battles overshadow anything Skyrim or Dark Souls threw at me, although both are great games, Dragon's Dogma is better IMO.
