@Waltz-Elf Star Ocean was awful, FF12 was very sub-par, i'm not even going to comment on Chocobos mysterious dungeon(because i've not played it), TWEWY was solid i'll give you that, basically it's hit or miss nowadays in what I feel about squaresofts titles, where as in the past I could buy their games on name alone and know I wouldn't be disappointed (SNES-PSX days).

About every game since 7 being perceived as linear, I never experienced 7, 8 and 9 as linear. It was when they removed world-maps and proper towns and interesting enough side-quests in their games that the worlds started to feel very lean, and not very exciting.

Why would I be selective in my reviews? Just because I don't share your hype about FF13 i'm suddenly a hater or something? Riiight..

Edit: Besides, I didn't come in here to start some bad blood. You're eagerly awaiting the release, judging by my experience lately with Square and the previews i've read I'm personally not. No need to drag this further than it already has. I'm gone.

And, I'll point out, that these opinions of yours are not exactly backed up by critical opinion. Final Fantasy XII alone averages over 90% according to gamerankings.

Well, so far you haven't listened to what I've said about the game. And I'm imagining that's because I'm not attacking the game. I'm one of those critics that will give the game over 90%, unless something really dramatic goes wrong. Music, graphics and what I've read about the plot and characters is all lining up with being the best FF yet, and the combat is a great deal of fun.

I never said those were anything else than my personal opinions, stop with the assumptions already.

You're a critic that will give a game 90% judging by 5 minutes of japanese demo, who's not being objective around here, please. I'll give the game a chance, hey it's Final Fantasy, my history with this franchise binds me to at least trying it out. But i'm not going to throw away +60$ on a pre-order for a game that might be awesome, not when there's so many great games coming out in the same release window.

The reason I don't value your opinion higher than that of previewers who's played the whole game is because of just that, they've played more than you have and probably knows alot more than you or me.

I'll buy it in on PS3 and give it a try, it will be my first FF game I buy on launch.

Heh, so far I'm not looking forward to the story at all, but I guess if it comes off as something that shouldn't be taken seriously, I might enjoy it.

Then again, I pretty picky when it comes to stories, and to be honest, the FF series has always been hit-or-miss for me when it comes to their stories. I think only FF3(It was a fun adventure, with some very memorable moments), FF4(I can't remember why, it's been too long. I just remember being very impressed with it), FF5(It was a fun adventure, with some neat surprises, including some rather touching moments), FF7(I think it ended up being the main motivator for me. It was really well done. It never took itself too seriously, and for the most part it was understandable), FF9(light-hearted, with some serious points that went over well), and FFXI(if it weren't for the story, I wouldn't have been as obsessed with it as I was) have had stories I enjoyed.

Really? Because in Japan it's got plenty of good reviews. It pissed off some people, but Final Fantasy is always going to do that because people have a bad case of tall poppy syndrome with it.

I don't know why there's such a resistance to story and cut-scene heavy games.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
If they don't like games with long cut-scenes:So be it.

I was really considering buying this game but now,I just seem over-skeptical of this game.
Maybe I'll buy it once better reviews come out. For now,I'm really skeptical.

@Mickey - I played the demo and was enamored from minute one. Honestly, I think the comparisons to X are well-justified, at least from what I've seen so far. I tend to be a big fan of playing games as under-leveled as possible too, so the chapter-restricted caps will only serve to make me like it more. Nothing I hate worse than being forced to level out of reasonable difficulty (at least X allowed you to neglect leveling your characters...which is the only thing that gave it any shred of difficulty).

If anyone wants to know more about FFXIII's gameplay, here you go: http://ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/826843/final-fantasy-xiii/vide...

Sounds impressive so far, but I don't like how you only control 1 character at a time. I found that extremely annoying in FFXII, and in that game you (eventually)have a greater degree of control over your allies, and could switch characters if needed. Even with the paradigm shift, it just seems too tactically limited to me. And I really hope the AI holds up - I zero tolerance for the incompetant. I don't want to die because my own allies screwed up.

I've lost interest in this game.

The Game.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

pretty much locked this down as a b-day gift now so, while i'm not getting it at launch, 3-4 weeks later isn't a bad deal. let's see if i'll be pleasantly surprised.

The game comes out on my b-day.so I see no reason not to get it.
Also, the game got 8/10 in LEVEL(swedish gamemagazine),and the things they didn't like I don't think will bother me that much (long dialuge, lame jokes(which I'm kinda used to in JRPGs ),it being linear until a certian point of the game)

I bought the strategy guide (which I tend to do with only Final Fantasy games) just because I've done the same thing for every FF game since VII (except XI because MMO's don't interest me and X-2 because that game was crap) just for the heck of having them around for help with side-questing but I'll probably wait to buy FFXIII, the game, when there is a good sale or the price drops. I'm not terribly interested in Final Fantasy anymore because there are far better JRPG series out now but I still give the series a chance. Also, SMT: Strange Journey is also out in March so to hell (no pun intended) with FF until a later date.

So...I'm getting my bro Final Fantasy XIII for his birthday, but he just did a bet where he can't play the Xbox 360 for...like...ever, I guess, so I'll have plenty of time to play it myself.

My cousin is exreemely excited for this. I bet he is very upset that he won't be able to drive out and get it, this game is all he has been talking about all month. Personally, I never found what is so great about the FF series, I only liked 5. :/

Edit: My cousin was able to pick up FFXII today for his Xbox360, and it is actually a very awesome game. I'm not really a fan of RPG's (just not that paitient I guess), but this one looks and plays great. I'm not even a bigg fan of FF, except for 5 and 12.

I bought the game yesterday, and although I'd played a little of the battle system in Japanese, this is the first time I've had a chance to start the game and get a sense of the story.

It's great, but at the same time, the complaints that reviews are leveling at it are legitimate. It is very cut scene heavy, and it is very linear. However, I utterly love the game, because I don't mind that style of gameplay. Others won't I realise.

But so far, so good. My favourite opening 4 hours to a Final Fantasy game yet.

I've had none whatsoever.

Atleast some people agree with me on this thread.

From what I have heard, it is extremely linear (and I mean extremely). The level progression is apparently also really linear, and is one of the largest gripes with the game. The battle-system is supposed to good, the story is supposedly good, just lacking any sort of side-mission stuff and options. Apparently in the later half of the game, the level progression widens up, but it's only an illusion.

Though the level progression is somewhat linear, you do get to heavily influence how each character's stats turn out in what I would consider the midsection of the game (Implying that at the beginning you have less choice and at the end you cap out, obviously).

There are around 54 side quests and three (large) extra areas, the majority of which can only be completed post game just because of the crushing difficulty.

And frankly, I don't see how the levels opening up make it "just an illusion", in older RPGs (not to mention a lot of current ones), stats for characters max out at the same level all the time. In FF13, you get to influence your stats up until the stat cap. If anything, it's just as linear in that respect.

Also, about the game being linear. I'll be blunt - it is. Most people I know who have played it acknowledge that but disregard it because of the good story and enjoyable characters, not to mention the fast paced battle system.

I understand that your post only reflects things you've read on the internet, but in the future try not to tear apart a game you've never even played.
