I wasn't sure whether this belonged in the other gaming or the help section because although i need help its nothing wii related...so i just decided it should be other. Anyway, I have a receiver that can do surround sound with the 6 speakers located in various places in my living room. However, i cannot seem to make these speakers all become active when i hook them up to my ps3. I currently am using the white and red audio cables connected from my receiver into my ps3 and my ps3 already uses the HDMI chord from the ps3 to the tv so i cant plug that one into the receiver hdmi port since its already used. however this only makes like 2 speakers work and heavily favors the speaker on the left so it sounds kind of like sh.......anyway, after doing some research i've been hearing alot about optical digital cables or whatever but i cant seem to find one anywhere in my house (since i dont know where they would be) and i was wondering if i could just use the white and red cable to get all the speakers to work or is it necessary to have the optical cable for full surround sound...

Its basically a problem of what cables i need, which go where, and what sound settings i should have in order to get the full surround beasty sound. I'm a stickler for immersiveness, best graphics possible and top quality sound haha

The red/white cables will give you sound on all speakers, but not surround sound. Yes, to actually make use of your speakers you do need an optical cable and probably some sort of receiver in which to plug everything in.

o.o you probably just said it all right there but i just dont understand sound things that well. So let me see, so at the moment the red and white ones are plugged into the receiver and then into the ps3 with the ps3 av thing it came with but im only getting sound from 1 speaker now...and nothing else, so should i be getting all the speakers o.o? 1/6 isnt that good hah im doing it wrong it seems.

Secondly, are those op cables cheap because i dont think i have one in my house, or maybe its in a box that came with a product we bought but i just dont have any knowledge of what it would come with...My receiver on the other hand has HDMI, AV, and Digital optical input so it should be fine no? Geez sucks to feel this challenged mentally right now.

If you are using a surround sound reciever without HDMI, the best way is

-Plug your HDMI cord into the back of you TV from the PS3

-Then run your (red and white) audio cables from the OUT port on your TV into the IN port on you Surround Sound Reciever

-Set you Audio Outputs on your TV to external speakers and you will add those speakers to you surroud sound as well. Granted you will have to adjust your volume seperately from the reciever.

Should fix you up in no time. Its not true HDMI sound but its still a dang good setup if you need it as a HDMI recievers are pretty expensive. I think I dropped around $600 USD for mine.

Dang lol i just ordered a 1.99 + 5 dollar shipping (sender should have just kept it honest and said 6.99) optical digital cord from amazon like 3 and a half hours ago, ill try what you did and maybe cancel my order if it pleases my ears, it hasnt shipped out yet so i still have time thanks matey.

By the way what do you mean by "set your audio outputs on your tv to external speakers" ...? is this like from the menu button for the tv or do i need to adjust the receiver to do this? Its a sony bravia 1080 tv so there is a menu button on the remote...

And lastly would you say the sound from this set up is good enough to just scrap the whole idea of ordering that cable or should i just leave it ordered because there is a notable improvement..? in other words will ALL the speakers work properly and well in this set up you have intelligently provided me?

For the small price your paying i would try both lol.

The sound option is in your tv settings. I think my bravia it was auto on output but both my Samsungs i had to adjust. I also use a high quality monster audio cables instead of the standard red and white cables that were a bit expensive. It works really well for my wii setup lol.

Ok i'll leave it on order thanks man and i'll try to set it up this way now. Do you have the optical cable...? are you impressed with it haha? Anyway i'll add your psn since i don't think i have yet. thanks

EDIT ok so i have the tv set to external speakers but i hear no sound at all right now. I've got the plugs going from the AUDIO OUT part of my tv into the AUDIO IN ports of my video 1 ports...i'm guessing i'm not supposed to have to placed in video 1? is it supposed to go into the AUDIO IN ports of another area? At the moment no sound is there and if i adjust the tv volume it says "TV volume Fixed" which means the receiver is in total control which I think is partly what we want?

EDIT 2 My current situation is I've got the plugs going from the AUDIO OUT part of my tv into the AUDIO IN ports of my multi channel part of my Sony STR K900 receiver to get the 2 back speakers to work and then i have my ps3 AV cable from my ps3 to the other chanel of my mutlichannel but i think this is wrong because now my subwoofer isn't doing anything and I don't think you said i should be connecting any av cables to the ps3 at all lol. It also has like a half second echo from the back speakers to wwhat the front speakers do, its not in sync. I just don't know where all these cables go in and out of to be frank.

Dude sorry I didnt get back here quicker!

Audio Out from the TV is correct. On the reciever mine has severl inputs such as V-Aux, DVD, CD, Auxilary, etc. You connect it to wichever one you want it to play on. So, with mine I run from the TV to V-Aux (red and white wires). On the reciever it has to be on V-Aux for the sound to play as that is the input its plugged into. If I was to have it on the DVD, CD, etc channel it wouldnt work. Your TV is just bypassing the audio from it to you reciever from the HDMI Cable.

The setting you TV Menu to TV Speaker Output is just a side option that I rarely use, so dont worry about it, as Im sure in some cases you would then get sound out of you TV and not the Reciever.

For my Bass. I have a Yamaha 12in Powered Subwoofer that is independently powered (Incredible by the way). For it, it connects directly to the back of the reciever via a subwoofer cable.

Oh, let me know how the Optical Cables work out, I havent tried those out with the PS3. I think I got some somewhere around this house in all my electronics of the past

@Slapshot lol my subwoofer works that way too, it works when i have only the front speakers on but it stops working once i multichannel to turn all the speakers on, the optical cable is already on the way though so whatever haha.

@Waveboy I did look into hdmi as an option since i heard it does 7.1 instead of 5.1 but then i remmebered my receiver the sony str k900 only has PASS THROUGH hdmi and not true hdmi plug ins so an hdmi cable would not work, lol thank my parents for havin the cheap and ancient technology lol, they dont value technology as much as me.

LOL its my dad HTIB you're right lol all the parts came together and theres like 2 speakers on the wall and 3 in the front and a subwoofer all by Sony lol. I'll work with what i have though since I'm not gonna spend that money on this type of stuff until I have my own house haha. And no, like slapshot I have a subwoofer with its own independent cable, not an optical one though. You seem to know alot about this stuff (you and slapshot), so when I get my cable shipped in I'll come back to ask for help if i need it in this thread, thanks

@Waveboy.... yep that whole deal is alternative for when you dont have a HDMI port on the reciever. I actually have a full Samsung with independent bass support in my living room on my 44in Samsung TV and its all HDMI and its flippin awesome. Ive yet to upgrade my reciever in my gameroom as the way Ive got it hooked up with the expensive cables I have, I cant really tell the difference between the HDMI and the way its set up. Also the room isnt terrible big so the surround sound acoustics are amazing.

Trust me, buy a house and then Rock Band parties blaring loud are a blast.
