Topic: Sony Executive Wants To Work With Nintendo, Why The Hate

Hopefully this discussion stays civil, but since the last topic was heavily biased.

Here is the quote everyone was hating for:

Yoshida wrote:

"I think as an industry we should preach this new perspective, from a very large cinema screen to a small portable, because that helps advancing the games and the game industry," he said. "We'd like to work together to promote 3D."

What? He wants to work WITH Nintendo to promote 3D? I thought Sony was evil and wanted to kill Nintendo, this is all too crazy!

Well this quote spawned these comments...

I laugh at you, Sony, I'll buy another Nintendo platform while I count down the days to the closure of your pathetic video game division.

So what if it doesn't use glasses? Nintendo thought of this awesome idea first and Sony is mad that they didn't.

Nintendo thought of 3D without glasses first? Wow that's new.

Not like Sony has bashed glassesless 3D at all...

http://3ds.nintendolife.com/news/2010/06/sony_president_not_i...

Oh really? He said it has limits. Nobody here can possibly think the 3DS has no limits.

Point is..

NINTENDOLIFE DOES NOT HAVE TO HATE EVERYONE BESIDES NINTENDO!

As part of this community, I'd rather not portray this site as an extremely biased site composed of people with tattoos of Mario on their chest and Toad on their behind.

These companies have the same goal, to push 3D into the market. Nintendo is doing it on handhelds, which is MUCH different than TVs. No Sony isn't just jealous and angry, they are trying something completely different. Sony's going with their console, Nintendo's going with their handheld.

Put away the pitchforks and torches and let's all encourage BOTH companies to move the industry forward.

I happen to like my tattoos, thank you very much.

I don't think they have the same goals, not exactly. Nintendo wants to sell video games. Sony wants to sell TVs. I don't see anyone rushing out to get a PS3 because it supports 3D on a few old games now. They're hoping this will get people to buy new TVs. And they're hoping that by calculated PR like this they can spin Nintendo's latest product (which seems to me more likely to succeed in the near future given that a handheld is likely to cost much less than a 3D TV, multiple glasses, and a PS3) as something that is going to benefit them by driving the 3D fad.

I don't really see them walking out hand-in-hand next E3, and I don't really see what they have to offer Nintendo. No one is going to get a 3D TV first, then think, "Oh, this is cool, let me now go out and get the much cheaper 3DS." If someone is interested in new technology, they'll try out the most affordable tech first, and I don't foresee 3DS costing thousands of dollars.

I'm not saying I hate Sony. I think you know that's not the case, having started the first PS3 thread and remained active in the latest, though admittedly my interest in the console is dwindling (but PSP interest rising). But I also don't think Sony here is suddenly buddy buddy. They're still competitors, and I can't help but be skeptical of comments like this that seem more like self-interested spin or, at best, begrudging respect, not some genuine interest somehow co-operating.

Not that I really care. There's nothing wrong, or offending, or bothersome, or whatever about the comment. Companies say stuff like this all the time in an attempt to look good. Just tossing in my two cents out of boredom.

Nintendo and Sony did work together at one time, but something when wrong and nintendo had to splt with sony and soon after, the N64 was Born.

Sony dosen't really need Nintendo, they have no use for them, unless sony just trying to buy out the competition.
But that just Business, and its good money if Sony's name is on every thing that nintendo makes, and also making then the only Video Game sellers in Japan.

Sound good for Sony, but Nintendo is not going to fall for that old trick again.....well maybe..

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here; this is the war room.

Bias is not always, or even predominantly, irrational "fanboy" bias. In my case, I have very sharp (read: stubborn, if you will) views about how I would like to see tech handled, particularly when it comes to costs and related factors. The 3DS is a wonderfully egalitarian and appropriate move for 3D at this point: it's one piece of hardware with 3D for everyone right out of the box. Pushing the tech on the home TV front, on the other hand, offends me the same way I was deeply irritated with the first several years of HD, in which they had people unknowingly replacing their home sets (for a high price) with something flashier and crisper, but offering a tremendous reduction in color fidelity, lag, and many other crucial variables. The industry doesn't care about that level of quality, though, they just want to find the next big surge for sales, and are perfectly fine promoting new tech before it has reached the proper thresholds of quality and cost-effectiveness. As I said before, I also hate "synergy" tactics where a company is pushing something in one domain, ie. games, in order to sell in another domain, ie. television sets.

Twitter is a good place to throw your nonsense.

Of course they're not trying to be buddies or anything, but it's not like he came out and said this purely for PR. It's being reported by a couple gaming sites, not everyone's local news outlets.

I don't think either of them have anything to offer the other, since they are pushing different things, but this is a nice change from the competitive 'That company sucks, hey look we have this!' attitude we see so often. And by the reactions on this site, you'd think he came out and criticized the 3DS as the worst handheld ever.

They're not going to be walking out holding hands at E3, but it's nice at least someone sees it as pushing new technology forward together.

And who knows, if Nintendo decides to make a 3D console next gen, they might benefit from Sony's entrance into the 3D TV market. Likewise if Sony tries to make a 3D handheld. (Though this site would explode.. for no reason.)

I think people who are arguing are missing the delightful humor in the situation. Sony PR constantly say whatever suits them best for the moment, then turn around jump in the other direction. Since this generation of gaming started Sony has maintained a smug and arrogant attitude, taking thinly veiled potshots at Nintendo whenever possible including at the recent Move reveal at E3.

This is just another case where Sony are saying something stupid in a weak attempt to use the hype and success of a competitor to advance their own agendas (or buff their own egos). I don't hate Sony, and don't wish anything bad on them... but their released statements are almost ALWAYS worth laughing at unless you are an uptight Sony fanboy.

The site would explode for great reason. When someone has a good idea, it's against the rules for someone else to ever use it or anything remotely like it.

One guy said to a couple of gaming sites that he's looking forward to pushing 3D forward with another company. If Miyamoto said this about Sony, everyone would think 'Aww, what a nice guy'.

It's not like he said this at E3 when all eyes were on Sony. I don't fathom how you can be 100% certain this was absolutely scripted and he actually hates everything about Nintendo.

And Adam even if you weren't joking, Nintendo didn't come up with 3D without glasses. That was addressed in the other thread.

There definitely wouldn't be such an uproar though if Nintendo decided it was adding 3D support for the Wii.

i've said before all throughout the Natal/Move BS, and I'll say it again -- competition in the marketplace is a win for the consumer. It keeps prices manageable and puts more interesting stuff on the table for us to choose from as they all try to out-do one another. If it turns out the item in question is awesome, we buy it, and if one company totally bombs with something (take the Go, for example) we all get to sit back and laugh up our sleeves. gettin' your dander up over this kind of crap does nothing but make you look like a tool. :3

I have no idea what she just said. ^^

I just want everyone to agree the comment was harmless.

I had thought that it was obviously a joke from the general stupidity of the statement. Maybe it just didn't seem as out of place coming from me as I'd hoped, haha. But yes, I know they didn't come up with that first.

Yeah, I hate Sony. A lot. But even I don't quite get the reactions people gave that comment :/ In fact, that comment actually raised my respect for Sony quite a bit. It seems that lately (around the 3DS being at E3) Sony has been giving good comments to Nintendo, and not being the usual "We are the best. Period." kinda people they are.

Thank you, this is what I was looking for

Yeah they have been a lot more sincere recently in their interviews.

It's just a shame, no matter what they say to however few people, there are those that'll claim each and every person at Sony has other motives.

And again, if Miyamoto said this about Sony, this wouldn't an issue at all. It's crazy.

Right, two main points to it:

1) Sony is complaining about Nintendo bashing the glasses when Sony has made an entire ad campaign out of bashing the competition and continually bashes Nintendo. It's hypocritical, plain and simple. You agreed that Nintendo shouldn't knock them and said Sony didn't bash the 3DS, but they did and you evidently agree with them doing so. You can claim we're fanboys and hate them just because they're not Nintendo but evidently you think that it's fine for people to bash Nintendo but not the other way around.

2) This proposed partnership only benefits Sony and it's thinly veiled PR. Sony wants Nintendo to push 3D in general and not knock glasses 3D because Sony is currently focusing all their divisions on 3D and they want to sell 3D TVs, 3D Glasses, 3D movies, 3D camera etc. If Nintendo convinces people that glasses 3D is bad then it will be bad for Sony. Notice how Sony isn't about being friends when it comes to motion controls? Nope, there they're bashing MS and Nintendo all the time and proclaiming their superiority, so it's not about the technology or the users.

So yeh.

I'll just copy the post I made in the ridiculous news story thread.

Wow, this article and the comments below it fail on so many levels.

If two big companies join together to promote the benefits of a new technology, then the market will be more receptive to it than individual companies going it alone.

Collaboration between tech companies has been going on since time immortal, it has nothing to do with "whining" or so on and so forth. Sony is quite right - Nintendo and Sony taking swipes at one another is doing 3D no benefit.
