Sonic Mania is the brand new 2D game for the 25th anniversary. Coming the PS4 and Xbox One in Spring 2017.
Features Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles as playable characters. Plus a new Drop Dash mechanic.
I'm hearing that apparently no, this isn't the anniversary game, it's a side project developed by Taxman. That would make a lot more sense, if Sonic Team was working on this for 3 years I'd be very worried.
Game looks pretty interesting, in my honest opinion. I'm still wondering why there's no Nintendo version (yet?), but it looks like a good time nontheless.

I wouldn't be surprised if an NX version of Mania is eventually announced. I have a feeling it's more a matter of timing than not wanting/not being able to release it on NX.
I hope it's ok for me to quote @Raylax here for the purpose of the thread... He made a logical point on one of the news articles about Mania not coming to NX which might help some of the confusion here.
Since a lot of people are gonna be asking why this is on NX but Mania isn't, my guess is that SEGA & Sonic Team were able to secure NX development kits, but the various (and much smaller) studios involved in Sonic Mania were not.
It's unlikely that the licensing agreements for dev kits supplied to SEGA and Sonic Team would extend so far as to allow them to be passed on to Christian Whitehead / Headcannon / PagodaWest Games. I wouldn't be too surprised to see Mania ported to NX further down the line when dev kits become more ubiquitous.
Yeah, I really like the look of this. I was a bit concerned before they revealed Project '17 that our big long-awaited 25th anniversary game was essentially an officially-published fan game, not unlike dozens of other already available high-quality fan game projects, but as a little April treat this'll do me just fine. Looks great, Whitehead does great work.
No NX support (although as I said as quoted above, wouldn't be surprised to see it down the line), but I'm sure the vast majority of people's PCs will be able to handle this if you don't have a PS4 or XBO (I don't!), so I think most of us will get to play this one way or another.
