Somehow I'm not surprised at Wii ownership among female gamers

The age distribution should have been broken up a little more in the 18-49 range. Well yeah not surprising it covers nearly 50% of gamers, but thats a huge range.

the thing i find most interesting is that games don't sell like they used to. the top 5 are NES and GB games... i don't count Wii Sports since it came with the console.

I think my old NES came with Super Mario Bros included, it was a long time ago so correct me if I'm wrong. If so we should disclude(word?) that as well. =)

good point. i didn't think about that. i know that the NES's did come with Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt, i think, early on, but after a while they stopped that and sold them separately.

funny how Wii is the favorite among both Male and Female, even though I know 2 girls that bought Xbox 360 for themselves instead of Wii (one of them because her boyfriend had one, the other because of Natal)... now that I think about it, I don't really know any girls that got a Wii for themselves, unless my friend's sister counts (and he was the one that wanted the Wii I think lol).

This year, probably before July, Nintendo DS should be claiming the crown as the worldwide best seller ever... it already has that crown in many places.

Also funny how the Wii is the only console this generation with an acceptable failure rate... and who knows why handheld failure rate wasn't tracked... I know Nintendo handhelds are nearly indestructible but some numbers could've been handy...

And something interesting, I recall seeing an online survey asking for everyone's answers on all those questions (the ones that weren't sales-related), so the data could (and more than likely is) biased, being representative of the US market only (unless they had the survey worldwide and a good enough chunk of the global population was surveyed)... for example, I know for a fact that age distribution is NOT like that here lol

Not to put you on the spot or anything but I assume you know everyone in Colombia or wherever you come from then? For all you know 2 blocks down the road every middle aged person could be sporting a wii, thing about statistics in general is that it doesn't always hold true everywhere. Same with your friends that bought a 360, your friends could be the only 2 female in all of Colombia who owns one. But I'm sure you know this already.

The last stats I saw on the Failure Rate were (estimates)
X360 <45%
PS3 >4%
Wii >2%

I cant remember where I saw that but it was recently.

It states on the picture within the first 2 years, those statistics might not be the same you read. Which would explain the 360.. but not the PS3 and Wii

I know that, it's just that I found it funny when I thought, and I really don't know any girls that own a Wii lol.
And with a minimum salary of $250 USD a month, and an average of $500 USD a month here, I really doubt that 2 blocks down the road there's a bunch of middle-aged people are playing Wii lol

something also funny about these statistics with some number crunching and the tiny bit of Statistics I've learnt in school and college:

Failure Rate:
-With a 23.7% failure rate within first 2 years, $100 average repair fee, each Xbox 360 owners "expect" to invest near $0 on repairs.
-With a 10% failure rate within first 2 years, $100 average repair fee, each PS3 owners "expect" to invest $5 on repairs.
-With a 2.7% failure rate within first 2 years, $100 average repair fee, each Wii owners "expect" to invest $1.35 on repairs.

Expected value is the possibility of a success (in this case, the system failing), multiplied by the "prize money" (in this case, $100)... Xbox 360's near $0 is explained by the 3 year warranty Microsoft gives against the most common problem (RROD and E74), but it isn't $0 because minimal problems that aren't covered by the warranty after the first year.

It could be argued that as time goes by, the chances of a system failing increases (Specially worn-out parts like optical drives), but for simplicity's sake I assumed a constant probability each year, which means defective systems are split
evenly on both years.
Nintendo's famous ultra-awesome warranty policies were not taken into account lol (like the guy that got a free Wii when his house burnt down, taking his Wii's life with it)

With the same data, but from the companies' point of view:
-With a 23.7% failure rate within first 2 years, $100 average repair fee, Microsoft expects to lose $23,7 per customer.
-With a 10% failure rate within first 2 years, $100 average repair fee, Sony expects to lose $5 per customer.
-With a 2.7% failure rate within first 2 years, $100 average repair fee, Nintendo expects to lose $1,35 per customer.

......................................................................................................................................................................................

Age Distribution:
From the average age of gamers (35) we could conclude a couple of things:
-Wii has done nothing to expand the market, people that have played games are the predominant market
-Most gamers today have been gamers all their lives.... 35 years old means they were playing Mario and Duck Hunt 25 years ago lol
-The survey was biased, most of those that answered the survey were experienced gamers.

It would be interesting to keep an eye on year-to-year changes on gamers' age groups and distributions, to see if the number stays nearly the same, or the number ages as the industry becomes older.

You're right, I had Tetris for my old grey brick, just couldn't remember if it came with the box or if I bought it separately. Same with Duck Hunt.

Which means the only game to breach the top 5 with boxed games is pokémon heh, it must have sold quite a bit. I'm guilty of a blue one at least.

When me and my brother bought our NES it came with Ice Climber. Were a bit jealous of my friends who got SMB

Pokemon is on the list of highest selling games.

Good. It better not move down.
