I don't know how long sonic can keep up in the industry and I've been both a Mario and Sonic fan for years and while Sonic doesn't appeal me more than Mario does, he's still memorable and awesome especially with the new voice Roger Craig Smith.
With reviews being mixed about lost world, it just proves that sonic can't be innovative like Mario seeing that the core thing about Sonic is about speed.
So the question is, Should Sonic just give up or still stay strong? Granted Colors and Generations proved that he was back on track as well as the Nintendo exclusives but still.....
Lol you are hilarious! Sonic doesn't appeal to you as much anymore so Sega should just kill the series. Hate to be the one to slow your spin but Sonic games still sell a ton so there is plenty of people they still appeal to. If Nintendo pumps out a Mario game with mixed reviews does that mean they should kill the character off? No, absolutely not. Should Nintendo retire Mario because Sonic games appeal more to some people? No, absolutely not. Should Sega take any of these actions with Sonic? No, absolutely not.
To sum it up and go ahead and kick the thread in supersonic speed to death. No. Sega should not retire Sonic. Sonic is a classic with lots of fans and some awesome games being made.

I don't think it's a cardinal sin to state that Sonic is somehow surpassed. Anthropomorphic animal characters were very popular back then, and Sonic is a mascot that was tailor-made for the 90s and the phylosophy that games had to showcase speed, power and a most of all a coolness that was based on what was cool back then.
While some of the new games have been very good to exceptional (Generations, Lost Words, Colours etc), I think it is wise from Sega to search for another mascot and try to create a character that is timeless rather than functional to current trends or to single mechanics. Years ago I sent a drunk email to Sega telling them they should bring back Alex Kidd and invent some gameplay elements for a game with him instead of Sonic because he has "a 70s Neil Young hairdo". They said they appreciated the comment but it's not likely to happen.
It's not a matter of ratings and it's not a matter of sales (though it's true Sonic still sells alot!), but while Mario's formula is universal and can be applied to many environments (you got the side scrolling 2-D, then the free roaming 3-D, then a cross of both etc), I think Sonic's trademark "speed" is less versatile in the context of platform games, at least apparently. I still rate Sonic games rather highly, so I'm really not bashing the games, it's just speculation.
Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

I grew up with Sonic. It is part of who I was and who I am. Even if the new games are bad there is still nostalgia to carry them through. Besides I can only think of 2 or 3 really bad ones.

Because there was only 2 or 3 bad ones and people act like it was the end of everything.

Maybe it's not that the games are bad but what we expect. We want to be blown away by new things yet we want Sega to retain the same formula used before. It's a bit difficult to please everyone, and that is why Sonic games that use both 3D and 2D have been the norm lately.
@Gso That's like IGN complaining Generations was too fast and then bashing Lost World for giving you the option to slow things down. No matter what they do people will find a way to complain and I don't really care as long as it is a game I enjoy.

@ RancidVomit86 About Sonic Lost World... It's funny how reviewers complained about the game but if you go on Miiverse people tell you not to listen and to actually give the game a chance.

Sonic says 'Listen here kiddo, I'm a million times more hardcore then that infinity lives baby gamed Mario'
Do you have to keep doing that in every Sonic thread?
I don't think they should retire him, while I've never been the biggest Sonic fan, there's no denying he's a huge icon in video games. To wipe him off the map completely would be a shame. They just need to get people to make great Sonic games again. Like I said, I'm not a huge Sonic fan but I loved Sonic Adventure Battle 2 along with Generations.

Nah, just kidding. Seriously, Sonic games are hit or miss. Colors was solid, Sonic 4 episode 1 was OK, Generations was AMAZINGOMGGOTY, Sonic4 episode 2 was mediocre, and Lost world was mixed...
Sonic games have their ups and downs, just go with the flow. Buy the good, not the bad...
