Unless there's actually good reasons, I favour the latter....?

You are going to get a different response from each person. LOL I was Nintendo-only until this generation. I got the PS4 and Xbox One but I prefer Xbox for many reasons: controller, backwards compatibility, service and, yes, games.

I like the Xbox, being my first non-Nintendo home console I buy by myself. Gamepass is nice to have every now and then (I buy months when it's on sale) since it lets me try games I would not play otherwise, and the system is overall quite user-friendly.

Haven't really played the ps4 so I can't compare them, though.

I also prefer Xbox, for the same reasons as BlueOcean.

Well, no one suggesting PS4 yet.... In theory, that system should be 'better' for games I like but actually almost all of those have come to XB1 by now & will do so in future

Are you interested in any of the Xbox exclusives (Halo, Gears, Forza, Rare Replay) or backwards compatibility with the XB360/XB?

If not, get a PS4 (far more exclusives).

Really? Not that I'm aware of being interested in... GoW might be, I'd like to try 1! Everything I'm concerned about that isn't on Switch is on both others or will be

@BruceCM You’ll miss out on games like The Last Of Us, Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, God of War, Bloodborne, and Infamous Second Son. But if you’re not interested that’s fine, get the Xbox 1 for native 4K and back-compat.

BruceCM

I'd like The Last of Us & TLOU 2, @Wesker ... While I've found there's quite a few BC XBox games I'd like at least as much, so that's winning

As a PS4 and Xbox One owner I find the PS4 exclusives overrated. Like @NEStalgia said a few days ago, the Xbox exclusives are generally more "gamey", old-school and arcade, sometimes not polished at launch but patched after launch and Sony's are generally Hollywood-wannabe gloomy interactive films with varied but rough gameplay.

I'd say neither, especially if you already have a Switch. Next gen is 2020, may be more helpful to just observe what happens with next gen stuff and take it from there.

probably a PS4, but the longer you wait, the cheaper it will be so...yeah.

that's my plan anyway, i didn't get a PS3 until like 3 years ago

@BruceCM Not just the Sony 1st/2nd-party exclusives (Spider-Man, God of War, Uncharted, Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, etc.)...PS4 also gets a lot of Japanese 3rd party games that never made it to XBox (e.g. Street Fighter V, Persona 5, Yakuza series, Kingdom Hearts 1 to 2.8, Tales of Berseria, to name a few).

That said - if you have no interest in these games, I'd go for XBO. I personally find the console hardware and OS to be a lot nicer, and features like Game Pass, Play Anywhere and backwards compatibility are pretty cool.

I like both for different reasons.

If digital ecosystem matters to to, go XBox and don't look back. It just has a far smoother digital environment. If physical, that's not as relevant, though data and dlc management is still better.

If access to some of the bigger games from last gen matters, xbox is the only viable option. X1X enhances many of them (maybe Sony copies that next gen, maybe they don't). This includes used physical and new digital purchase of those games. And is the only current console with games such as the FFXV trilogy (maybe ps5 will emulate ps3 games.... Maybe it won't)

If you don't have much internet bandwidth, don't get an X1X - patches are gargantuan. That's going to get worse next gen. 8k my foot. Who wants half TB patches? But getting last gen games upresed it using PC textures makes it very inviting.

If you want VR: PS4.

If you want a lot of niche Japanese games, PS4... However many of the newer ones are going to be Switch primarily. Will xbox gets some of these, but ps has the majority.

Then LAST consideration is the exclusives. Sony has quantity and variety there. Most of the internet will tell your PS4 wins that easily. Exclusive of VR, the first party Sony games are critically highly rated... They're all kind of samey.... Artistic, Avant garde, cinematic interactive stories. Some have great gameplay (god of war, ratchet and clank. Some are terrible gameplay but fun interactive adventures (uncharted, etc.).

I'm a fan of both xbox and ps first party but they're different. The internet decided sony has the best games. But the internet is irrational. Sony games have memorable stories, places, characters. You play the game once, you probably won't play it again. Maybe once a decade like a favorite film. Xbox exclusives are more like Segas prime. Arcady, rough but come classic.... Video gamey.... Something you keep picking up and playing periodically because it's fun to play..... Veryclassic Sega... And Nintendo... But with guns and cars

I like both, so i own both. But thinking what options matter to you is only what your can decide. If you want a box to play assassin's Creed, cyberpunk, and rdr...... And don't care about Spiderman or Halo.....xbox is the nicer experience.

If you want to wait to see next gen and plan to Rob a bank soon, there's that, too

Not all but just the Play Anywhere games and the 360 games are not on PC either, not to mention how expensive a good gaming PC is and that he wants a console...

I don't have an XBO so I can't offer an opinion on that front, but I got a PS4 back in November and can't recommend it enough, great system.

I know it's been said ad nauseum, but it really does have some great exclusives. I'm generally not one to get excited for the big AAA western games, but after giving both Spider-Man & God of War a go they've both become some of my favorite games in recent years. They do have very a cinematic focus, especially during the main questlines, but the moment to moment gameplay is very satisfying & fun in both titles, which is something I'd wish they'd focused more on during their advertising campaigns.

I'd also like to give a special shoutout to Astro Bot: Rescue Mission. It's VR exclusive, but anyone who has ever played it agrees that it's by far the best exclusive platformer either Sony or MS has released this gen, and it's arguable it's even better than Super Mario Odyssey. It absolutely has the same creativity, charm, and pure fun factor as any 3D Mario game.

Despite it's reputation, I'm even finding Knack to be decent fun. It's certainly not an award winning game & the story is a bit naff, but my feelings towards it are a lot like how I hear XBO owners talk about Crackdown 3 or ReCore. Not award winning games, but decent fun for a decent price.

I've also played quite a bit of third party games which I've enjoyed, but most of them are on XBO too. Except for some of the more niche Japanese stuff like Senran Kagura or Tales of Zestiria, but a lot of those kinds of games are starting to come to Switch and/or XBO (and Sony is starting to censor some of those types of games), but it does still have a decent back catalogue of those types of games from the past 5 years.

Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@BruceCM
I think you should pick PS4 for:
1. Optional update so you can play your PS4 quickly
2. Simpler User interface, same like Switch U/I
3. Beautiful Blue color U/I by default
4. Beautiful blue color game case
5. PS4 exclusives such as Street Fighter V, Dragon Quest Builders 1 & 2, Chocobo Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy, etc.
6. More games from Japanese developers

But if you aware with PS5 and want to use Backward Compatibility to play PS4 games on PS5, consider the PS4 games first, don't buy PS4 machine yet until you understand PS5 features.

@BruceCM I personally wouldn’t want to miss out on TLOU 2. Dreams, Death Stranding and Ghosts of Tsushima also look like they could be a bit special.

While the ones I tried on Vita (God of War, Persona & Uncharted), @BlueOcean, didn't really appeal.... While the Japanese games are mostly coming to Switch
There'd be quite a few games in XBox BC & the GamePass sounds great. VS very few PS4 exclusives I'd like
