Hey guys, just got my slim today, can't think of a psn name yet so i havent gotten my id yet. But i do need to know do i necessarily need an HDMI cable to play in at least 720p, or can i use the standard av cable for now to acheive at least 720. The reason i ask is because at the moment its running at 480i by default and i havent gotten the hdmi cable yet so i'm really unsure about how to change it lol
EDIT Could someone also please explain this whole upscaling thing as well, i am a bit confused about it still

Mine automatically goes to 720p when my HDMI cable is hooked up (on my 720p tv). No idea about the regular cables, but I thought they were only capable of SD.

For HD, you need either a component (red, green, blue) cable or an HDMI cable. Also, what is your TV capable of handling?
As for upscaling, I don't know a good way to explain it...but here goes. Upscalers take Standard Definintion games/movies (480) and "upconvert" them to HD-sized resolutions (720, 1080). Of course, SD stuff is still "blown up" to reach HD size, but they can smooth it out to look as good as it possibly can.

Look for an opening exactly like the one that's in the back of your PS3 where you connected the cable... is not that hard, the cable only fits in 1 type of connector lol.

@DaDun... IF your tv doesn't have a HDMI Slot then its not going to run in HDMI. As for upscaling...... basically put a DVD in and start watching it, with the Upscaling option turned on in the settings and it basically looks a good bit better. Smooths out the image and basically it looks like HD TV on basic cable/sat.
