During my vacation to Ocean City, NJ last week, we went to an arcade. This arcade had Sega Rally Championship. I played it, and loved it. So much, I wanted to get the home version. However, I don't have a Saturn, so I'm stuck with the PC version. But, slight problem; in a uniform pattern, the framerate of Sega Rally keeps dropping for some reason. For a few seconds, it runs fine, then it drops, then it runs fine, etc. I have all the hardware requirements. Does anyone know how I can get the game to run at a smooth 60fps?
I encountered the same with the PC demo. The problem is very simple: it is a 1994/1995 3D game and much too old for current hardware and operation systems like Windows XP, Windows 2000 and even maybe ME. There are some equally old 3D games that still run fine like Virtua Cop 2 or Turok 1, but they are rare.
Unlike some other PC classics like Battlezone 1997, Red Baron 2, or p.o.d. I dont know any fanmade patch to get Sega Rally PC running fine again.
So, there are only three ways I know to get you playing SEGA Rally at home :
a) build up a fitting system like Windows 95, Pentium 2, 64 MB-Ram, Voodoo II or RIVA TNT in real life or as virtual machine - this would you also enable to enjoy many other PC classics that dont run anymore today
b) buy a SEGA Saturn. With this option, you know the game would run for sure and enable you to play many other missed Saturn games like Virtua Fighter 2 or Daytona USA. Might also be cheaper if you dont have any accsess to old PC hardware.
c) Emulate SEGA Rally on MAME. But trust me, it isnt worthy your time and efforts to get it running. The emulation is very flawed and no fun to play.
Hey, the framerate problems are gone! Sega Rally now runs at a smooth framerate on my PC. I'm not sure why, as I didn't really do anything. My PC wast probably acting up again the first time I played. But I don't care, now I can play this gem.
