A thread for the discussion and appreciation of rhythm games!

I love me a good rhythm game. I'd have to say my favourite is the Theatrhythm series - although I haven't played many of Square Enix's games, the gameplay is really fun and intuitive, and the tracks are diverse. While I've had a lot of fun with the likes of DDR (Dancing Stage here in the UK!), Rock Band and Donkey Konga, these days I prefer the convenience of touch controls on a portable console. There's nothing quite like getting into an upbeat rhythm game when on a dull bus journey.

So what do you guys think -
Do you like/play rhythm games?
Which is your favourite and why?
What platform / control scheme do you prefer for your rhythm games?
Where do you see rhythm games going in the future?

Rhythm Heaven for me, don't really play others, or other music games in general besides Audiosurf. (even then I stopped playing that a long time ago)

I actually recently fell in love with them. I had an inexplicable craving to play them and I came across things like Hatsune Miku, HarmoKnight, and (my favorite) Rhythm Heaven. There's just something satisfying about failing to get into beat many times but then magically timing it right

On the PlayStation 4, you have the likes of Amplitude, Thumper and Rez Infinite, the latter two are available to play on the PlayStation VR, and Rez Infinite is simply mind blowing. All three games were released this year alone!

There's also Guitar Hero Live and Rock Band 4, both of which has many, many songs to buy, download and play either on your own or with a group of friends.

SingStar is still a popular karaoke choice too, which also has lots of songs to choose from.

On a whole, the rhythm genre hasn't been quite as popular/successful since the PlayStation 2 days.

@Peek-a-boo Thumper looks pretty tense...and Rez Infinite confusing! Haha. Can't say I've played much of rhythm games that give that sort of 3D perspective...maybe I should give these a go.

As for Rhythm Heaven...can't believe I've never played that one, despite seeing the name thrown around. Looks 100% my thing.

I am a taiko no tatsujin junkie...I also play taiko as a semi-pro (I am in a group and we are non profit and affiliated with the city). I also like rez, child of eden, and amplitude. I like rhythm heaven but no game makes me more disappointed in myself than that one.

The original amplitude and frequency were what got me into rhythm games. I wish the new one had as diverse a music selection as the original, though.

Oh and of course, the final fantasy 3DS rhythm games were very amazing. Though I can't master them for the life of me

I'm still a beginner to rhythm games. The last one I played was Rhythm Heaven Megamix but I got stuck on the coin challenge.

I mostly just play the Rhythm Heaven series. Rhythm Heaven Fever is my favorite of the series, although Megamix is a close second.

My favorite rhythm game is Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure, though. I really liked the story, and of course, the music!

I'm looking to give Rhythm Heaven (3DS) a shot, but it's £25 on the eShop. Is there enough content to justify £25?

I enjoy rhythm games, but haven't played many. Harmoknight and Rhythm Thief are about the only ones I've tried. Maybe I'll get Hatsune Miku or Rhythm Paradise some day.

Also, I'm fairly bad at rhythm, but I'm pretty good at remembering timing, which kinda balances out for me.

@Buizel: I would say so. Rhythm Heaven Megamix has over 70 songs, minigames, and the challenge train. The challenge train is basically sets of missions where you have to do special challenges during songs. A challenge may only be "miss up to 3 beats" in a song, for example. There is a variety of difficulty on the challenges, and there are quite a few challenges! The controls are also really nice. You can either use touch controls or the "A" button. So if you really like rhythm games, I recommend Megamix!

@Blue_Blur Thanks! I might give it a shot next time I feel like buying a new game.

I LOVE music games! The DJ MAX series is top-notch (if you haven't played them, I highly recommend it), at least when it comes to the hardcore challenging "skill" stuff. I still love the classics, Bust-A-Groove (1 & 2) on PS1, the PaRappa The Rapper/Um Jammer Lammy games, Sega's Space Channel 5 (1 & 2) on Dreamcast/PS2. Guitaroo Man was amazing, and needs a sequel (PS2, PSP). The original Frequency and Amplitude (PS2) are classics.

Guitar Hero/Rock Band are no brainers, but those are "separate" in my mind. I remember loving Pop N' Music w/ the special controller (Japanese Dreamcast import/Arcade game) - need to get that again! I still have the Britney Spears PS2 game just.. because.. it's terrible.

I agree, Rez has always been amazing, and in some ways, they topped it with the underrated Child Of Eden (360/PS3). Child Of Eden on a 3D television on PS3 is a sight to behold. I hope they do what they did with Rez Infinite and create a version for Playstation VR. It only makes sense!

I still have some to experience (old and new), and I'm probably leaving a lot out, but just wanted to chime in. In my dreams, Guitaroo Man and Space Channel 5 get a sequel..

Surprised noones mention DDR That was my first rhythm game. I first saw some people playing it at an arcade 99,00 Felt in love with most rhythm games ever since. Its unfortunate that latter series home releases were always plagued with licenced pop songs no one cares about. I just want the songs from the arcade version.
