Classic survival horror Resident Evil 2 is officially being remade, Capcom has announced.

While details on the project won't be revealed for some time, VideoGamer.com understands that the title will be a complete remake of the original game built for modern platforms.

The remake is being produced by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, the producer behind this year's Resident Evil HD Remake.

"We're pleased to confirm that Resident Evil 2 has been approved for development," a Capcom representative said in a statement provided to VideoGamer.com today.

"As the title is only just starting its development cycle we unfortunately don't have any additional information or assets to share at this time. However, for now we want our fans to know that we appreciate all the feedback and support we've received on this title. We're looking forward to delivering this highly anticipated Resident Evil experience that fans have been waiting for."

Formats for the game have yet to be announced, but fans should probably expect it to hit PS4, Xbox One and PC. A release date has not been confirmed.

"It's been great to see so many positive comments from fans that have pushed the project to get approved," added Hirabayashi. "The team here at Capcom Japan really appreciates fans' passion and support and will do our best to bring fans what they really want."

I know a lot of people have been wanting this since the Gamecube days and REmake. It's the year of longly anticipated games finally being announced as over 13 years later, it's on the way.

Another game I wish was coming to the Wii U. I need my RE fix.
Oh well. I guess I can always get it on PC. Besides, I still have to complete RE5 for the X360...

God first.

Cool, it will be interesting to see what style (like RE4 or Remake style) they choose.

To blessed to be stressed.

I hope they use the same style from Zero and Remake. I'm not a fan of the shoulder cam

REmake was gorgeous as a Gamecube release. Imagine how nice REmake 2 might look as a modern gen title.

I will be getting this on PS4 simply because playing an RE game on a PS system holds such fond memories for me. This on in particular. I remember renting this game with a friend when we we in high school during a sleep over. Such good times.

Awesome news! Day 1 purchase!

I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

You could also say that you'd choose to play it on the PlayStation 4 because Resident Evil 2 was first released and is very well known for being on the PSone. I shall be playing this for that reason alone!

I hope it will keep to the REmake mechanics rather than the over-the-shoulder view in Resident Evil 4, as much as I like that game.

The pinnacle of the tank-controlled Resi games, without a doubt! I look forward to this one. I'm glad with all the remakes we're getting, at least we're now starting to see some of the ones people have actually been asking for. E.g FF7 and RE2.
Mario Sunshine has to be next on Nintendos list.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

I thought it was released on the N64 at the same time as the PS. The release on the N64 was more remembered for me then the PS version simply because a game like RE2 was on a Nintendo system. The main reason I played it so much on the PS was at the time my friends all had PS, I was the only one who had a N64.

However due to the fact that the first time I ever played an RE game was on the Playstation, which was the first one, Resident Evil games just feel like they belong on a PS console for some reason to me if that makes sense. Just like Tekken, feel right to me on a PS console.

@Tasuki:
RE 2 hit the N64 in late 1999, about a year after it was on PSone. I remember because as N64 was my only console at the time, the wait was killer.

On topic. I want to get hyped for this but they didn't really show anything. The old Capcom we know would do this right but we can't be sure what the current Capcom will do. I'm certainly interested to find out though. I'm hoping for Nintendo fans, because a lot of that fanbase loves RE, that this remake will at least find its way to NX.

I was very excited when I heard about this. I wonder if it will have the classic Resident Evil bird's-eye view or the RE4 over-the-shoulder view. I don't know which type of viewpoint I'd like better.
