I've played the game for about 25 to 30ish hours now. Not sure. I just beat the story a couple days ago and it is a freaking great one. I want to badly but i wont spoil it for you peeps I have it on ps3, so if any of you do and wanna spend some time in online just give me a shout.
I played a borrowed copy yesterday. Basically GTA with horses, all the same unbearable flaws. Stupid people with stupid voices and stupid dialog. The worst physics in the history of physics (next to Niki Rock N Ball). And mediocre game play. Only thing I see going for it is the theme and of course the big open world they're famous for making.
I hate cougars, they killed my horse, so I had to drop $750 for my horse back
Now that's just silly. Why pay for horses if you can get them for free! I've had a few horses die on me on the way via accident or mauling, and I've never dropped a cent on replacements. Easiest thing to do is to nab one from a random guy riding along the countryside. I tend to somewhat dislike those horses, so after that I just go looking to wrangle a wild horse, preferably a black stallion. Horse hunting can be good fun.
I couldn't stand those slow, sluggish horses, just terrible.

That doesn't sound like a very good review, vonseux! The cutscenes, imho, are darned good (if a little cliche...but hey...it's a Western...) and I can understand why they'd want to highlight them, but the gameplay is pretty awesome. It's loads of fun to just roam around seeking out folks who need help, taking out gangs, preventing hangings, and so on...if you ignore the main story completely (which you can do indefinitely, and there's still plenty of stuff to achieve without it) you'll see it's far more game than movie.
Well, that's what sandbox games are for. You have the option of playing through the main story (usually, though not always, with multiple paths), or ignoring it completely and playing with it however you see fit. (As you would in...y'know...a sandbox.)
You may not want to ignore the main story. I don't either. But it's foolish to suggest that those people don't exist. I have a friend who's put over 100 hours into Fallout 3 and hasn't advanced the main storyline any more than he had to by leaving the Vault. It's all up to the player.
Got it at my house now (bro brought it over) and I tried the online multiplayer and wasnt impressed at all. I got kicked out for being new as soon as I entered a match like 6 times and finally threw a few F...Bombs and the controller across the room and havent turned my PS3 back on since!

You sure you were kicked out because you were new? There are issues with online kicking people for no reason apparently. Mine freezes my system up. There is patch being worked on. Doubt i'll play anymore though. Glad I beat it before I started freezing up. All my freezes have been from online.
@Josh.... oh yeah. I could hear them while my game was loading screaming "Kick the new guy, Kick the new guy!" oh and best of all, it was in Free For All.... How the ....do you have the ability to kick a player in Free For All?

I haven't even touched the multiplayer modes. If I'm not mistaken, the DLC is going to be multiplayer, which makes me less interested in that. bah.
Also, I encountered my first fun-sapping glitch. Everything else was easy enough to overlook, but this one's actually irritating.
I grabbed a wanted poster and accepted the bounty. It said the guy was at Hanging Rock, so I went there...and he wasn't there. There was a red dot on my map, but he was nowhere to be found. I figured the game glitched him into a rock or through the ground or something, so I went away. Time passed and he was removed from my map...but nobody's hanging up new wanted posters anymore.
So I can't do bounty missions. Ever! I still have that darned guy's poster in my inventory, and if I pick it to look at it, my character pulls out the map, and just stands there like an idiot. I can still pause the game, move the camera, etc...but he won't budge. If I do it on a horse, I can control the horse...but not him. It's really annoying; I can't get him to put the map away. I have to reset the game.
So no bounty missions for me, unless they patch this. A few other folks online expressed similar frustration, so I hope Rock Star does something about it. Boo.
Great game, still...but I miss my bounty missions. And I also can't complete certain outfits without it.
Single player is where it's at, I haven't played multi-player (although I can't play multi-player).

The multiplayer isn't very fun. If you've played the GTA IV multiplayer, you know exactly what to expect.
It's pretty much like a shooter's online multiplayer with the exception of the "Free Roam" mode that lets you join with a bunch of other people while you run around New Austin doing side missions and whatnot. I found this mode to be sort of misleading because most people would kill each other instead of helping out one another, since killing your buddies gives you experience, which makes absolutely no sense to me.
The other modes are kinda lame too. There's capture and flag and deathmatch variants, but they're all done better on other shooters like Call of Duty and Halo. And that's what pretty ruins the entire experience of Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer; it feels like a dumbed down version of other, better online shooters.
The only MP i've played has been in the Free Roam. Teaming up with some others to take on a hideout of baddies is fun, and even if you just show up halfway through, you still get nice XP.
Sucky glitch, CB. Have you been playing long since? Maybe the bounty missions will reset after awhile. Also, there was an update/patch when i started playing this morning, so hopefully they've fixed the various random glitches the game has (which i've thankfully not had happen to me beyond some random graphical and minor collision-detection niggles).
