Razer is entering the tablet race with Project Fiona, a Windows 8-powered gaming slate with integrated controllers and enough processing power to run PC games at high-specs.
What struck me first about the design was its size. The tablet portion sports a 10-inch multitouch display, which puts it on par with the iPad 2, but since it houses such powerful hardware, it has a decent amount of thickness to it. What's more, the side-mounted controllers are comparable in size to the PlayStation Move, making it comfortable to use, but rather bulky.
But Razer isn't trying to make the thinnest or sleekest tablet, it is attempting to make something that works well for high-definition games, and it seems to have succeeded.
Gameplay on Space Marine was fairly fluid once I was able to adapt to distance between the left and right controls, not to mention the unusual ergonomics and button placement. The analogs were responsive and the action buttons had a nice level of resistance.
The design was also surprisingly lightweight, though since it was a handmade prototype hardwired to a power adapter, there's a good chance there was no battery inside.
The high-resolution multitouch display was crisp and detailed, showing incredible detail and a robust range of colors. I was unable to explore the interface too extensively, but Razer briefly demoed its custom UI and game launcher, which makes accessing games, system settings and other media more effective for the touchscreen interface.
Users will have access to a complete build of Windows 8 with a standard desktop view. Although Razer will offer its own game launcher, it says users will also be able to download clients like Origin or Steam.
Project Fiona is certainly an interesting new concept in the PC gaming space, and I'm eager to see how it evolves between now and release.
This thing obviously still needs a lot of development but it's really promising. This might be the future of portable gaming and I could see other tablet makers getting on board with this concept. I've been worried about those touch screen only, 99 cent gamers slowly suffocating Sony and Nintendo (I know, too early to worry about such a scenario) but this creates a new avenue that is appealing. The portability and flexibility of a tablet with comparable controls to that of a gaming console. I'm intrigued. I'm hoping those two gaming handles slide in closer when you wish so that it's a little more compact when you want to just surf the web, read or what have you.
its price point is under $1000 so its likely to cater to a smaller audience then most tablet gamers. but this is a dedicated pc gaming platform. not sure how portable it is given the bulk and its "handles"

So Razer is going after both tablets and consoles with this thing?
if they price it right they very well could. but given that its focus is pc gaming its really for them. i think personally apple could come out with 2 attatchments that snap onto the sides of their ipads that serve the same purpose for gaming. and then theres wii u which still confuses me.

This thing is billed to have the power of a high end PC. ipads aren't built with that kind of power in mind. If there is a place for gaming towers that cost five times as much as this thing will probably cost then there's a place for this.

Considering most PC games and console games are the same these days, there's not much difference between the 2 platforms other than controls.
The Wii U is basically a controller with a screen. In other words, it's like a handheld (except it needs the Wii U console to operate).
yea but if your a die hard pc gamer this is already on your list. if not, you might not be willing to shell out the vague price point of "under $1000". tablet gamers arent going to hop on board just to download angry birds when they have a ipad, and apple could easily sway those who would with the mentioned attatchments. this is why the wii u is confusing me because i'm not sure where it intends to situate itself.
