why not? Xbox LIVE Silver is free, so it isn't like money is the problem... just plug an ethernet (la, RF45, or whatever you wanna call it lol) cable to your 360 and connect!
PS: Some games use the date function (for example, Fable) for real-time stuff (think Animal Crossing)

@DarkG: If I bought an ethernet cable, it'd go from the family room, through the kitchen, down the hall and into my parent's bedroom. That's where the router is, plus I doubt leaving my 360 in their room would be acceptable.

Ethernet cables are quite cheap, it wouldn't be very expensive to get one that long (but not so reliable unless it's CAT6)...
alternatively, you could get an extra, used router/ap for cheap on eBay and use it as an access Point near the 360, using the included ethernet cable to connect it to the console
or, get the official addapter... used or new, this option would be the most expensive
