Thanks for the recommendations. What is your opinion on some of the following that I was/am looking at: GTA series (PSOne), Alien Trilogy, MM Legends 2, FF8/9 (not 7 its too expensive)?

Can't stand GTA personally, FF9 is a great game interesting characters and story with a decent battle system, FF8 on the otherhand has an awful story and unintresting characters, does have a great battle system though, Alien Trilogy is kind of dated now, but still fun so if you find a very cheap copy I'd say get it.
Everyone is listing good games that are worth getting, for some reason Destrega comes to mind. It's an odd "fighting game"...
Text taken from Wikipedia: Destrega is a 3D fighting game created by Koei in 1998 for the Sony PlayStation. Destrega separates itself from other games by creating a Rock, Paper, Scissors type of fighting system. When timed right, you can cancel or overpower your opponent's attack. The game uses two types of fighting styles: close-up hand-to-hand attacks and Relic attacks, which are the long-range projectile attacks. You can also fight in the air, on the ground, and on top of structures.
I remember spending hours playing this game... might be hard to find though.
@slapshot82: I'm assuming you're talking about FFT... doesn't matter what system you played it on, so long as you've played it at least once.

@theblackdragon--I played FFTA. Does that count? (lol, it was the game that burnt me out of the SRPG genre.)

I'd have to say really any Spyro or Crash Bandicoot if your into that. Also Final Fantasy 8, Ape Escape, Metal Gear Solid, Crash Team Racing, or Syphon Filter. I hope I gave you some good suggestions
@O_B: no, because the original didn't have that Judging BS or the Law System for battles going on.

Do you like kicking Japanese College students in the face* (or a simulation of the former act)? Then buy Rival Schools - it's ace.
Also, you can't go wrong with Final Fantasy - 7 is the definitive one, but 8 is a bit of an odd one and 9 (from what i've played so far), while graphically awesome (for a psone game), is classic square confusing storyline™ - for me at least - they're still great games.
As for games I wouldn't recommend, they include Tenchu 2 Stealth assassins - an interesting game (if you play it right - like a ninja), but foggy visuals and unwieldy controls make it harder than it should be. Command and Conquer Red Alert is a bit dull, but then these sort of games are better suited to the PC.
(* coincidentally, I do NOT enjoy kicking Japanese College students in the face - simulated or otherwise, but when a hulking, bearded college headmaster is brainwashing kids, a nurse and a teacher to beat you up and take over Japan (or something), you've gotta do what you've gotta do!)
There he goes, Firkraag. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. - My VGscore

Necronomicon. You know, let me just quote what I wrote on it at TV Tropes: "Necronomicon had a puzzle where the player was presented with about 20 unmarked bottles, and had to mix two specfic ones in a beaker. Every such attempt involved moving the bottles one at a time from their shelf to the beaker, there was absolutely no hint as to which bottles had to be mixed, and only very vaguely alluded to that you had to mix some of them in the first place. This puzzle leads directly into having to locate an unknown piece of information from a talking, hard-to-understand and annoying-to-operate interactive encyclopedia, then using the name it gave you to locate a specific urn of ashes in a massive room of urns by looking at near-impossible-to-read labels with initials of the guys whose ashes these are. This is the point where most everyone either look up a guide or throw the game in the trash." Granted, the rest of the game isn't THAT mean, but it's still way way too god damn annoying for any sane human being to get some enjoyment out of it.
avoid at all costs? Monster Rancher, Jade Cocoon, and Azure Dreams off the top of my head.
