We've been talking about this in the NL PS3 Discussion Thread. Turns out it was caused by the hacking group Anonymous, who were apparently doing this for us.

According to the article it wasnt Anonymous. They said for once it wasnt them who had done it

It was Microsoft.

I don't care if Anon was involved or not.

I'm fed up with hearing about these self-righteous, (self styled) cyber revolutionaries attacking companies because they dare to prosecute someone openly stealing from them.

What ever happened to writing to your MP?

I agree. I hope they find every single Anonymous member responsible for prior attacks, and the joker responsible for this attack, and jail them.

Microsoft made a very respectable comment toward this issue yesterday and I have to commend them for it - especially after all of Sony and Nintendo's little escapades we've seen recently!

It was an Intrusion and Sony deliberately shut down the entire service. I'm officially sick of these dang hackers!

Anonymous are idiotic and hypocritical hackers. I hope they or whoever did this to the PSN service gets jailed for this.

@Slappy: I was joking at the time I said that. But now that Sony has put out the statement I was most worried about (information/credit) I am thoroughly pissed off at these hackers.

Wow glad I own an Xbox and not a PS3. I hope Sony gives something to its players for this inconvenience like a free month of PSN or something along those lines.

Thats why I said or something along those lines I wasnt sure if you had to pay a monthly fee like XBL.

its all good we have a subscription thing as well but not how they do it for xbox, more of a you get discounts and free stuff that the amount you get that is free etc amounts up to or more then u paid for a year or 3 month sub that kind of thing didnt interest me much either but they do get some rather good deals though

Ah that cool. I never messed around with the PS3 much due the the price tag. I went with the Xbox 360 instead cause most of the game that came out on PS3 also came out on the Xbox and at the time it was cheaper than the PS3.

Still I hope you guys get something out of this inconvenience besids a we are sorry for the inconvenience letter.

In all seriousness, people are blaming Sony and threatening to swap to Microsoft, but Microsoft had this same ordeal happen and it shut down the online service for paying XBOX owners for 11 days. It was the same thing, intrusion, and afterwards Microsoft starting banning accounts for hacked 360's. This is nothing new, it's just happening now to Sony. Nintendo has had their share of it with DS pirates as well.

The problem isn't Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo - the problem is the hackers!

no one is gonna "swap to Microsoft" That idea is idiotic--give up 300 dollar console plus tons of 60 dollar games to reinvest the maybe 30% of that money you get via trade-ins on the opposing system and like 2 games...maybe.

But yeah...it sucks, pure and simple. I suppose now is as good a time as any to decry Anonymous, as well as the practice of "cause I can lols" hacking. It's the exact same thing as mailbox baseball or any other similar early-highschool-era behavior--I screw over people I can't see cause it's funny to cause harm to others. Granted--Anonymous pretends to have some BS righteous for-the-people agenda, but it's thinly-veiled cover of sophomoric antics. They screw with stuff because they can and walk away laughing cause no one knows who did it. It's the 14 year old kid spamming racist comments on youtube on a fake account--they just pretend its more mature and somehow justified.

Anyway. I miss PSN--I wanna play some Dungeon Hunter.
