Yes, it's absolutely worth it. You have years worth of games to play and games are still coming. Reccomendations: The Uncharted series, The Sly Collection, Sly Cooper: Theives in Time, Batman: Arkham City (I played it on Wii U, but it will still be amazing), Ni No Kuni, inFamous, Mirror's Edge and Tranformers: War for/ Fall of Cybertron. Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires is a good game too and if you're looking for cheap fun pick up Dark Void, it's only $4 used at GameStop. There are a bunch of older PS3 games you can find at GameStop for pretty cheap price too.

Even though there are tons of must buy games for the PS3... I suggest that you wait until you can get a PS4.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

The library isn't as crazy deep as PS2, but it is a good library, with the top shelf stuff being very top shelf. There will probably be another couple GOTY contenders in it after Last of Us.

I'd recommend it. If Sony's past systems are any indication, the PS3 will have a long tail. Plus, the lack of backwards-compatibility on the PS4 means you should probably get one anyway.
I back up all of the stuff @CanisWolfred mentioned. Except I can't really talk about the One Piece game, seeing how I'm not a One Piece fan. And although LittleBigPlanet was not my cup of tea, that's because I'm not really the kind of person to create stuff.

I'd also recommend many of the 3rd party games, since you seem to lack a decent PC. Be warned: many of them are going to run way better on the XBOX 360, especially if they were made before 2010. Even then, there's a good chance the PS3 version will be the lesser version; just look at Skyrim. Still, if you're unwilling to fork over the $130 for a used 360 as well, you won't be left out. Unless if you're playing an early 3rd party game, Bayonetta (which last time I checked was a free PS Plus game, go figure) or anything by Bethesda.

The PS3 library is really solid overall. You definitely won't be short of games to play.
I used mine as my main blu ray player too. I can't fault it, it does the job.

Library full of awesome games, great blu-ray player, cheap, going to be supported for at least a couple years after the PS4.

So, yes!

@moomoo
"Be warned: many of them are going to run way better on the XBOX 360."

This is basically exactly why I didn't opt for PS after a while. I have a PS3(I've had it for 4 years now, and I had one before sn Xbox 360), and I usually enjoyed the games it had when it was my only HD system at the time. Then I got an Xbox 360 a year later, and stuff just worked SO much better, IMO.
The first time I looked at the PS3 XMB, I saw all the options and complicated features, and that was very nice, but many of them end up meaning nothing.

In a way, games not being optimized for PS3 or sometimes not even being released on the system kept me from choosing it as my choice console.

Bluray is nice, but PS3 required installs for plenty of games because of it, when games ran perfectly fine off of DVD on the Xbox 360.

I understand the benefits of each console, but Xbox 360 kind of squeezed its way in as the more supported console based on cheaper gadgetry that was optimized, kinda like how Nintendo has done with the 3DS, Wii, and probably now the Wii U.

EDIT: Xbox's decisions just made more sense. Now every console has HC discs and regular improvements across the board without making a big deal about, and just went with the flow.

I think if you come from especially the US you should probably know who Banacheck is.

I'm guessing you're not into dudebro games like Call of Duty. Given that, the PS3 has a ton of great JRPGs and some quality exclusives like Infamous. It's also great for niche stuff from publishers like NIS America. You generally don't see stuff like Atelier, Disgaea, or Hyperdimension Neptunia on other systems. Also, there are some Western developers with publishers that don't seem interested in the Wii U, so there's that too.

Groovy things:
Tales series (Tales of Graces F and Tales of Xillia are available now for PS3)
Infamous series
tri-Ace games (Star Ocean, Resonance of Fate)
Valkyria Chronicles
Bayonetta
Prince of Persia series
BioWare stuff (Dragon Age and Mass Effect)

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

Yes, i bought a PS3 lately, cause of the price and a hanful of good jrpg's.
Must say i swapped him for a ps Vita....but that's because only handhelds are allowed in my Pocket Gamer's Club.

I know the PS3 has stability issues, but honestly, the XBox just isn't very appealing to me. As most of you have guessed, I hate FPS's, with only a few rare exceptions, and the 360 library seems to be compromised of mostly just that.

While the PS2 has some exceptionally good RPGs, I just wasn't sure about the PS3. Mainly, my biggest concern is buying a console that will soon be phased out like it was nothing. It isn't so bad with something like PS2, as there isn't much to phase out, but with something like the Wii, buying late could ruin the whole experience (not saying there was much to experience on the Wii, but hey, I'm fickle in my tastes).

I have owned my slim PS3 for over 3 years now, and I would definitely say it most certainly does not have stability issues. As for RPG's, at least for JRPG's, it's a mixed bag. There are indeed some good ones (Tales series comes to mind), but not really a treasure load of them. Also, just gotta say it, I highly recommend you avoid FF XIII.

As for support, I think it's pretty much concrete now that the 360 and PS3 will both be supported at least into 2016.
