Topic: PS3: Something still worth purchasing?

I've asked this about the Playstation 2 before, and although i had my initial doubts, this happened:

Untitled

No idea why the picture is upside down.

Although I haven't spent that much time playing the console, you can tell my heart is in it.

However, a new problem has arisen: with all the recent PS4 hype and stuff going on, and with how poorly the Wii U is being handled, I wanted to invest in something Sony that was more modern, but at the same time, I didn't want to fork ANOTHER 300$+ (since the last one sent me into debt by accident. Long story). This is when I turned my attention to the PS3.

Unlike the PS2, PS3 has online, Blu-Ray, a FREE PSN (I hope it still continues to be a thing), and a lot of cool HD games. Now, my laptop had a framerate of 5 fps, and since I grew up with mostly portables, I've never played anything significant in HD.

What I wanted to know is this: with the PS4 out soon, and with the imminent halt of PS3 games being released, is the PS3 still worth purchasing? Normally, I would have purchased PS4, but the lack of backwards compatibility doesn't seem very appealing (especially considering the main reason I have a Wii U is to play all the Wii games I missed out on.)

Not only that, but is there enough content/entertainment options on the PS3 to keep me busy for a while?

Didn't they say that about PS2 as well... Heck, didn't Nintendo say that about the Game Boy line when the DS came out as well?

I heard in MANY places that Nintendo even claimed that the DS was a secondary handheld compared to GB.....

I heard the PS3 has lots of good single player games so it might be worth it.

The PS3 is cheap & has loads of excellent games which is great for people just picking up a PS3, the PS3 is staying free online & don't worry about support because Sony knows how to support there consoles, so its going to be around years yet.

Kinda yeah, there aren't as many great exclusive games at a great price, but since there's no backwards compatibility with the PS4, you may as well get one soonish. I recommend waiting on some kind of sale on the 500GB version, though. Save you a bit of cash. The main problem with the PS3 is that if you have a decent computer, you can play most of its multi-console games (I know you play some games on PC) where they're usually cheaper than their console counterparts, and there aren't nearly as many good exclusives as what was found on the PS2.

Recommendations:

  • Ni no Kuni - easily the best JRPG on the console...which isn't say a whole lot, but trust me, it's really good.
  • Sly Cooper: Thieves of Time - If you liked Sly 2, you'll probably enjoy this new sequel.
  • Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time - A great 3D action/platformer that is also hilarious.
  • Metal Gear Solid 4 - If you're still playing Metal Gear Solid after 2, you'll probably enjoy this one.
  • Burnout Paradise - Racing games don't belong on PC, so get this gem on a console.
  • Valkyria Chronicles - An all-around good Strategy RPG with a unique action-ish aspect to it.
  • 3D Dot Game Heroes - A Zelda/Dragon Quest parody that is arguably better than the games its making fun of.
  • Uncharted Franchise - Pretty fun actiony setpiece game. If you ever wanted to play a blockbuster movie, look no further.
  • inFamous 2 - A pretty good Open-world game featuring a guy with superpowers.
  • One Piece: Pirate Warriors - Do you like One Piece? If not, hopefully you'll at least be interested after playing this.
  • LittleBig Planet 2 - The central game's okay, but I think you might be most intersted in the creation aspect.
  • Dark Souls - If you enjoy the digital equivelant of having your face pound in by a hammer over and over again, you'll love this game.

£178 is not alot of money, or buy a second hand one if you cannot afford it.

You must be talking about the completely useless 12 GB console that only a fool would buy, since you'd fill it up with patches in, like, a week...

Kind of like the 8-32GB Wii U's lol, but i think thay should drop price once the PS4 is out. But if you cannot afford around £230, you shouldn't really be buying a console, just wait until thay drop in price.

Dragons Crown is well worth getting.
I don't know what games your into so.

The Wii U has more memory(there's like 4GB off limits to users or something), and doesn't need as many updates. The PS3 gets updated at least once a month, but I think @Canis is kind of exaggerating, anyway, which is why I'm questioning why you backlashed at Wii U...

If this kid wants PS2 BC on his PS3, he's going to have to pay at least $200 for a BC system, then another $100 or so for a good HDD(if he plans on actually playing PS3 games).

Considering the PS4 is not backwards compatible with physical games and possibly digital games as well, there may be a reason.

I'm planning on getting a PS3 soon. I'll get it once the PS4 comes out, since the prices will (hopefully) lower.
