Would you prefer it to be on Eshop or not?

Me, i would say nay to it. It is a game that nowadays requires a large amount of nostalgia to want to play. It is just so outdated and it hasn't aged very well.

I think the reason they won't release the handheld RPG games on VC is due to the nonexistence of link cable emulation for 3DS/Wii U hence you could never actually properly beat the game (I consider beating the game to be completing the Pokédex). Maybe Colosseum/XD Gale of Darkness will happen if GCN comes to Wii U VC as those are completely different.

Wow, that brings back memories. Yea, they are old, but I don't see what makes them any more ancient than some of the early FFs, and those have been re-released on a variety of platforms, including cell phones.

I would LOVE for R/B to be re-released on the 3DS VC. They won't, but I would be ecstatic. I loved those games when I was a kid, and they have a particular nostalgic charm to them now.

They could always make the trading go via wireless. That shouldn't hold them back.

Old topic, but the way I saw it was that it wasn't coming to Virtual Console because the point of Pokemon as a series was that you could trade Pokemon between any games... including forward to future ones. And since they probably couldn't achieve trading/connectivity between Red and Blue and the latest Pokemon games (at least not easily), they'd be no real point, your team would be trapped on a specific download only game with no way to ever transfer them from it.

I can see zero benefit to those two titles, maybe their GBA upgrades that put them up to date still pretty well with the current stuff, but they're so wooden and out of date. Ultimately I just don't see it happening because it'll just undercut the sales of their new stuff in their eyes when they have a $10 download or a $40 retail game, they'll want to move 5+M copies of the new one.
