Frighteningly disappointing

The original Outlast was an amazing game. It revolutionized the horror genre where instead of being able to fight your opponents, you were left defenseless and forced to run and hide. This created an authentic sense of fear as Outlast was home to many horrifying foes that got your blood pumping as they relentlessly chased you. Since Outlast did all of these things, it's no wonder why anyone was excited when Outlast II was announced. And, as of October 4th, we've been able to get a taste of Outlast II in the form of its demo. After playing this demo, I'm not so sure this sequel can live up to the praise of its predecessor.

In its demo, Outlast II has you take control of Blake Langermann as he and his wife, Lynn, go to the Arizona desert as investigative reporters to discover the truth about a mysterious murder of a Jane Doe. As soon as the game hands the control of Blake over to you, you'll notice as you look around your surroundings that Outlast II looks a lot like its predecessor. While it does maintain the same art-style, it has also noticeably upgraded in the quality and polish of its graphics.

While the environments in this demo were very well done, the representation of gameplay and horror cannot bear the same positive description. The reason for this is because the demo is too short and ends on a very abrupt note. While some things, such as the more advanced options available to hide from enemies and the potentially creative chases, are shown in the demo, they make up about fifteen minutes of this fifty minute demo. Its not even that they're represented in a way that makes you want more, but in a way that makes it feel like you got the game ripped from your hands and told by the developers to hand over some money if you want to purchase a product your still uncertain about buying.

To elaborate a bit on my point, some of the areas you can hide are water troughs and foliage which can be used as camouflage. While not the best representation of advancements in hiding places, its enough to make players aware that Outlast II is bound to be host to more of this kind of creativity. As for chases, there is only one in the demo. The chase has you running through a house and then a corn field as you frantically attempt to dodge illumination of enemy flashlights which, if put on you, could spell certain doom. This is the fifteen minutes mentioned in the previous paragraph. This short amount of time is enough to get me excited for the full game. But, as also previously stated, this feeling is slaughtered by the abrupt ending.

There's no doubt that Outlast II is going to be a good game. This is evidently seen through the increase in graphics, hiding mechanics, and creative effort put into chases. However, the abruptness of the demo makes saying all that a bit difficult, but doesn't disway me entirely from wanting to own the full game. One thing it does disway me from saying, however, is that Outlast II is capable of topping the greatness of its predecessor.

*This demo is available for download up until November 1st
