@SilentJ - I had some missing sound effect issues too - you're not alone. Granted this was a few months ago during my playthrough...

Oh look. A Warriors game is getting terrible reviews in the press.

F%^($& this crap. Sick of idiot self important "journalists." Games journalism is the only form of writing where subjective, emotional wankery is rewarded with these people getting full time jobs.

It irritates me that every single Warriors game in western press is critically slammed, while it's critically praised in Japanese press.

Why it irritates me is because I can guarantee you the reviewer of each and every Warriors game has only played it for a hour or two, tops. They refuse to take the context of the game into account - dismissing them as mere "button mashers" without understanding that people are playing these games because they're historical recreations, as much for the combat itself.

They are also reviewers that clearly played the games on the easiest difficulty settings, because I can promise you, on hard mode, they're not button mashers.

Simple solution: stop reading the reviews. I'm sure the rest of the Warriors fans have.

That's not really an option for me.

And besides, the misrepresentation of a game is a bigger problem than how it irritates me personally. It was actually the reviews that kept me away from Warriors game originally - my first one was Samurai Warriors 3, which I only played because I was sent a copy to review myself. And when I did play it I realised how misunderstood the series is by western press. There are other potential Warriors fans out there that have kept away because of the reviews, I'm sure.

It's irresponsible journalism. That's what upsets me.

Woah I just glanced through a few reviews of Legends of Troy...this game may actually stink lol. Sorry to throw fuel on the fire there...

What reviews? I didn't see anything on Metacritic, and all I see are scores on Gamerankings without links (magazine reviews).

Edit: And the average score on Gamerankings currently for Warriors of Troy certainly isn't unusual for a Warriors game. It's incorrect, but not unusual.

I did a First Impressions article on the game awhile back over at Movemodo, and I'm about to write up an article about this for the site as well as we finally know it's coming outside of Japan. I'm really looking forward to this one!

@josh & swerd... now that you guys mentioned it I do remember a sequence where the sound got really screwy for a few minutes. I literally almost forgot about that. After spending so much time paying so much attention to every detail of the games for reviews, I tend to just enjoy what I can play on my own leisure, and pretty much dismissed it. I already knew the game was quite buggy, and I was expecting much worse. I did last night have to restart a sequence as the chapter got stuck and didn't progress itself as it should have. It's buggy, but still a really great title. Solid 8/10 material for me. Deduct for the glitches and somewhat repetitive fighting mechanics to a 7/10, and then add back one point for the fantastic character, story and just being such a gripping title in general.

@Waltz.... I've played my share of Warriors games, and I always like them for a few hours and then tend to get bored because of the repetition. That is just me personally. I do think that the games need to start spreading themselves out in between releases though.

Ape Escape is still going? Surprised really...

Releasing it on PSN is a bad idea, unless the parent is clued up on the Internet the audience wouldn't know that this game existed...if they put it on PSP however it would be a slightly better idea as a PS3 release would be worse.

Or maybe the reviews in the west are right, and the ones in the east are wrong. Who cares if they're historical recreations if the games are no fun?

The bottom line is that you like the games while most reviewers over here don't. That doesn't make them wrong and you right.

Yeah really Waltz. You just can't expect western reviewers to rate the game good because "WaltzElf from NintendoLife" says the game is good.

@Slap: I don't remember mentioning anything about sound problems recently, so i'm guessing you at'ed the wrong person or theres another josh around these parts.

And I've never played a Warriors game and I don't plan on it because they don't interest me at all.

@slapshot - was that bit you got stick in on chapter 12, where you couldn't jump across to the other carriage? That happened to me, and I've read that it's happened to quite a few other people too. But in some way, it makes you feel better that it's a glitch, as opposed to being an idiot for not being able to work the puzzle out.

It's AMAZINGLY popular in Japan. Or it was, not sure how things are now.

And who said Ape Escape is for kids? I've never once met a kid who liked Ape Escape or even knew what it was. Ape Escape is a loved series from the first Playstation and a lot of people who still buy them are in their teens and above.

I'll probably buy that game when I get a Move, but I'm really disappointed it's just a on rails thing...I WANT APE ESCAPE 4 DANG IT.

The bottom line is that you like the games while most reviewers over here don't. That doesn't make them wrong and you right.

It does when their critiques of the games are misguided, though.

I'll make an analogy. There's a whole lot of board games out there - there's Monopoly, Settlers of Catan and all that, and those are popular, for the mass audience, and a lot of fun to play.

And then there's Samurai - a hardcore wargame where you recreate the battles of medieval Japan.

Monopoly and Catan takes a few hours to play, you have a couple of beers, you laugh and socialise. Samurai takes a weekend to play a scenario, and it's more serious in nature.

Now, a board game reviewer reviews Monopoly and Samurai. He praises Monopoly, says its a lot of fun etc etc. He gives Samurai 1/10 because "It looks boring, it takes too long to play, etc etc"

He's wrong, because he failed to take into context WHY someone would play Samurai. Fun is relative, and for some people there is a great deal of reward (or 'entertainment') in recreating battles. Just like some people enjoy reading non-fiction.

It's the same with the Warriors games. The historical component is a big part of why someone would want to play the game, and not only do western games reviewers fail to recognise that, they have at times (Gamespot) managed to mistake Samurai Warriors with the Chinese three kingdoms era. And to be fair to Gamespot - none of the other guys even mention the setting beyond a short paragraph.

Part of the role of being a good critical journalist is in considering the context - understanding why a game, book, movie, whatever exists. Those that only take things at face value are generally poor journalists - it would be like reviewing the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie without having read Alice in Wonderland, or knowing anything about Lewis Carroll.

If a review takes a game into context, and then gives it a poor review, then great. But no, there might be one in 50 Warriors games reviews that even understand the point of these games. They're trying to turn Samurai into Monopoloy.

Western games journalists have a horrible habit of only considering the entertainment value of games based on one value - how 'fun' they are. A game can be good, if not great, and be rewarding in other ways.

Has anybody tried Atelier Rorona, and do they recommend it? It's only $29 here and it doesn't sound too bad.
