The title says it all, I saw the trailer for KH3 and also wanted to start playing them before the trailer. Should I play them in order of release, chronologically on the timeline, or another order?

I personally would play them in order of release. It may not make the most sense, but it gives a good indication of the evolution of the series. It also leads to more "Oh yeah! That makes sense now!" moments, which I find satisfying.

However, if you do want to go down the chronological route, I believe this is the order:

1. Birth by Sleep
2. Kingdom Hearts 1
3. Chain of Memories
4. 358/2 Days
5. Kingdom Hearts 2
6. Re:Coded
7. Dream Drop Distance

Either way, have fun with Kingdom Hearts. It's a very good series of video games.

EDIT: Forgot to add 358/2 Days to the chronological order. My bad!

EDIT #2: If you want to knock out KH1 and Chain of Memories with one stone, I do recommend picking up Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix, which includes those two games which themselves include what was previously Japan-exclusive content. The game also contains a "Theater Mode" that contains all of the cutscenes of 358/2 Days. However, I'd only recommend watching those cutscenes if you can't play the base game in any way. I believe the release date of HD1.5 Remix is sometime in September, but don't quote me on that.

I do want 1.5 HD, but I don't have a PS3. I might get one for it on black Friday.

hmn.... what to do i need advice!

i wasn't really interested in this franchise, but now i've grown curious... looks fun
would like to try it out // play the games.... i have a 3DS XL so i'd love to start with dream drop distance, but appearantly that's not a good idea

i've read that those games are confusing as hell if you haven't played the previous games...
there are just too many great games to play them all and seeing how Kingdom Hearts 1, etc. are for ps2... there's just no way i can play them (never had a playstation)

i could easily buy a ps2 + all the old games...sure, but i already have a wii u in my living room (+ps4 soon), don't really need more consoles (especially not for 1 franchise)

what should i do? i would really like to start playing Kingdom Hearts.. unfortunately you have to play these games in a certain order for them to be fun and make sense

is there any other way to start playing this franchise than to buy a ps2?
maybe i'll enjoy it and will be one of the many people looking forward to new Kingdom Hearts game-announcements in the future

Not really. The series has grown more complex with each title and the 3DS entry is more of a bridge between 2 and 3. You possibly could get away with skipping most of the side story titles (though it's even better if you don't), but playing 3D without playing 2 first would likely be quite disorienting, and I wouldn't recommend playing 2 without playing 1... Basically, 1 and 2 are quite vital to following the series and you likely will be lost and unable to appreciate 3D without playing the first two. I'd recommend just getting your hands on a used PS2 (they're pretty cheap) and playing those two titles.

If you're dead set on playing 3D without the others, there IS unlockables short summaries of the previous games in 3D. However, you will miss a lot (quite a lot) if you rely on those to catch up (especially for KH2, there was a lot of story in that one).

Side note, I personally felt 3D wasn't as good as most of the titles (especially 1 and 2), and if you end up feeling the same you might turn yourself off to the series before playing any of the main games, missing out on something you may really enjoy.

Order of release, as with the majority of game franchises, even if it's out of chronological order, you usually just appreciate it more.
