The home console industry as a whole is so messed up at the moment, and the Wii U is hurting the most from it and Nintendo's mishandling the launch.

Publishers are relying more and more on big overbloated "AAA" games to keep themselves afloat, and will not accept anything subpar below their expectations. The Wii U, though it's on an upward streak, is not "good enough" for such ridiculous budgets.

I won't into too much more detail, but most Wii U owners will most likely own a Playstation or Xbox, so releasing on the latter two will be more profitable.

Unca_Lz Is mostly right, but there's another thing that imposes a problem on many third-party developers: NIntendo themselves.
And I'm not talking about tech support or anything like that - it's about Nintendo's own games. A Nintendo game, even if it's bad, is automatically selling well, just for being a Nintendo game. That makes every Nintendo-released or published game an immense competitor. Most third-party developers have trouble competing with that, simply because they tend to target more specific audiences, since the "Nintendo way" of trying to reach everyone is very difficult to achieve, and risky. Japanese developers have their loyal fanbases even on Nintendo consoles (Monster Hunter being just one of many successful examples), but that doesn't work so well with US and EU (although Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, and GTA might be an equivalent to that).

And, just to mention it, XBone and PS4 are very similar in their architecture, which is very close to a PC. That means it's much easier to develop for them than ever before - the WiiU, however, has an entirely custom-built system, and developing for it means learning a programming language or two (I don't know how it's built, so I can only guess).
Developers are quickly jumping to the easiest way of developing games, so they love the PS4/Xbone architecture, naturally. The "extra mile" of learning how to develop for WiiU is often seen as a hassle, especially for multiplatform releases, which is why the WiiU versions are almost always the worst iteration of such titels - the teams behind them simply can't be bothered with utilizing the WiiU to its fullest, despite being very powerful.

Like @Kaze_Memaryu says, basically every other console is PC(x86) arcitecture, while Wii U is PowerPC. It's just far more convenient for developers to target an architecture that is used on everything, except Wii U.

For the time being, it's just not convenient enough, but I wouldn't call that lazy.

Third parties want different things than Nintendo.

The video games industry expanded well beyond Super Mario Bros. So everyone, and I mean everyone, tries at some point to reconcile Nintendo with the rest of the industry, be it gamers/fans, or industry investors/commenters/media, third parties (all taking a turn at some point), and then Nintendo itself.

That combination of third party ambitions, and everyone at some point trying to reconcile Nintendo with the broader /broadening industry, gives you the narrative we have today.

It is under-powered. There are a lot more things that power add than graphics as well. Much much more. Graphics are just the most obvious improvement. The Wii U also doesn't have the best sales, and its userbase isn't the most friendly to third-partys either. It's also just harder to develop for than the PS4/XBO (which also have similar architectures so it's easier to put a game a on both of them) without considering the power. The XBO also doesn't have bad sales, they just aren't as good as the PS4, which is doing amazing.

The Wii U is underpowered compared to the PS4/Xbone. That is just a basic fact. For example the Wii U has 2 gigs of RAM and the PS4 has 8. Plus the userbase of the Wii U are either hardcore Nintendo fans who bought it for Nintendo games, or people upgrading from the Wii, who will also not have had much experience with 3rd party games. The two factors result in a less than stellar outlook for the Wii U's third party support.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

I think it's not a matter of lazyness or power, I mean for a dev it's just "why make it on the weak console if the strong ones are even nice enough to be similar so I can release my game in two systems more easily and with better chances of success?"
they're not lazy and the system isn't really too weak, they're just playing safe because PS4 and XBone are so similar that they will have to work less to release on two platforms instead of one and the extra power leaves some space for slack in the efficiency department. can't blame the third parties for playing safe not releasing games on Nintendo systems when Nintendo likes to choose the safe route all the time when things look ugly.

Sarcasm Yeah... that's why the Wii U didn't get Destiny, GTA V, Thief or any other cross platform game? C'mon, man. Specs is NOT really the answer. Its more leaning to sales like you said.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

I've only seen one article from a media outlet talking about how bad the PS4 is selling in Japan.

Because in terms of ratio's and averages, the Wii U is far behind the XboxOne. The XBoxOne had 40% of Nintendo's global sales numbers at the end of the first month that it launched. The Wii U had already been out for a year at that point.

Yeah, Destiny is coming out for the PS3 and 360. The Wii U could've easily handled the game, so it's not about power. The real problem is that it would've sold like crap on a Nintendo console, since Ninty fans only care about their Mario games...

@Herandez We only care about Mario games? That's incorrect

Clearly, it's lazy developers.

I mean, why else would they not devote time and money to develop something that isn't going to sell or make them any profit?

Obviously, they're lazy. They should port everything to Nintendo consoles, if only so whiny Nintendo fans will shut the heck up.

@Hernandez A vast majority of Wii U 3rd party games were stripped down in content or performed worse than other platforms. There are some good 3rd party games but did you honestly expect people to rush and buy a 3rd party game that was already made available on a previous platform? The Wii U userbase just doesn't consist of diehard Mario and Zelda lovers. The Wii U, actually, has a nice diverse library.

But don't get me wrong. The entire Wii U userbase needs to start supporting games that would are different because they are coming more and more.
