Topic: Next-Gen is..... quite dull actually

Whenever I look at upcoming PS4 games, Nothing really screams "Next-Gen" to me. Aside from Indies, and the rare Japanese developed game, everything seems to be doing the same thing last gen did, pushing for realism and graphics and adult themes. Not that there's anything wrong with that, In fact, those games are more than welcome. But aside from indies, LBP3, and *lol*Knack, that's all there seems to be. Admitedly, this was kind of a problem with last generation. Thank god for Nintendo, handhelds, and indie games. Say what you will about them, but at least they're offering games beyond Hollywood production values.

Look, Mature, realistic-looking games have their place, and I would hate to see them leave. But developers need to realize that balance is a good thing, and not everything has to be a realistic, M-rated, action game. How about a colorful platformer for once? Why not another colorful, over-the-top, fighter like BlazBlue or Smash Bros. I'm not saying everything has to be super innovative and unique. But, balance out cartoons and color, with brown and grey. If the film industry can do this, why can't games?

Don't get me wrong, there are a few next gen games that interest me. KH3, Sunset Overdrive, Infamous Second Son, Uncharted 4, Rime, Nintendo games, and the many indie titles comming. So I'm not saying I have zero interest in next-generation, just a very limited interest. I think most of my gaming will be dedicated to Handhelds, downloadable, last gen and retro gaming for quite a while.

It has just started, so it's not all that weird.

The WiiU is the one system with a steady release of big titles right now, while Ps4/XBO is where the WiiU was a year ago (living of off re-makes & re-masters to fill out the gaps). Next year will be a lot better overall.

Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

Yes, Gen 8 = Gen 7 with a fresh coat of paint. What a time to be alive.

I agree except that of course Nintendo decided that long gaps of no game releases was a better idea than adding in more than 1 remake/remaster.

Give gen 8 some time, your judging it a bit fast considering gen 7 lasted for 9 years and most of the games until 2015 are being made for the previous systems.

As for the PS4, personally I love it, and it's my main console of choice,.....it's my Wii U that unfortunately spends the majority of its time in the off position.

Can I get in the off position?

It hasn't even been a year and the gen defining exclusives hasn't even launched yet, give it time.

the only game so far that looks "next gen" is quantum break . the way you manipulate time and all the objects on the screen. i think that is something that could not have been done on the 7th gen consoles.

Not everything is dull also your comments tell me you didn't look very hard for diversity on PS3 off the top of my head Puppeteer, (countless) Ratchet and Clank games, LBP games, The Unfinished Swan, Tokyo Jungle, Wonderbook: Book of Spells etc.

Some games that to me a very visually appealing but vibrant and not dull of gritty.

Also I don't care that Bloodborne is gritty and dark when it does it so well.

The far better question is: How hard do i have to look for games to kick of a new generation ?
Honestly, every gen so far had launch(window) titles that defined the consoles stand point, complimented its features and set our eyes on whats to come.

The SNES had Games like F-Zero, bringing faux 3D to the home TV and SMW, upping the scale of SMB3 big time.
Sega made its point clear with awesome arcade ports on the Genesis.
The N64 showed people what 3D was all about and how to properly use it with Pilot WIngs and Mario 64
The PS1 launch line up, much like the PS2 one was rather tame. Though the PS2 kicked off with titles like Dynasty Warriors two, showing what the new Horsepower under the consoles hood is all about.
The Gamecube introduced Nintendo fans to more atmospheric titles like Wave Race, Luigis Mansion and Rogue Squadron, all incoporating the systems new power to create new experiences and looks, that hold up even today.
The Xbox360 upped what could go on at the screen at once with games like Kameo, while defining what the new HD look is all about with games like PGR3. The PS3 did much the same with grand games like Genji and Resistance showing what that power is all about, and what devs are able to pull off.

And now ? What now ? Where are the games showing me whats to expect ? So much computing power and all there is, are games that are also on the PS360. To me it seems, that this will be the generation of FPS and Resolution....and not much more.
No real kickoff showing us how crazy it can become, no Kameo or Dynasty Warriors to show us ho many entitys the system can portray simultaniously, no Mario 64 to introduce us to a whole new diension. Just Knack, showing us how dull particle effects can be with gameplay from the 90s, just Dead Rising 3, doing what is predecessor did, now in a brown coat, just Killzone, doing what every shooter did since the beginning of last gen.

Even Nintendo missed a proper kickoff that truely blasted people away, but the at least tried to come up with concepts like asynchronous multiplayer and social components without using the word Facebook.

The current generation is lacking a vision, a goal beyond looks.

Nintendo didn't decide anything. They remade Windwaker to fill a gap (don't forget Wii Sports!) with the only difference being they had no third party developers who cared to do the same thing. Don't think for a second that if Nintendo had the extra man power, they wouldn't have churned out a few more just to get something on store shelves.

I have a fairly decent PC to complement my Wii U. The only game I have played this generation that felt even slightly 'next-gen' was Nintendoland and maybe ZombiU, two games that could never have been the same on the previous crop of consoles. Everything else is just rehashes with better graphics. I believe there will be a few stand out games in the next year that people say are defining the generation but they will be first person shooters and third person action adventures. GTAVI won't be ready til at least the middle of the generation but I am sure that will push gaming to some kind of new level. I hope something different like No Man's Sky lives up to the expectations because otherwise this might be the first generation since the SNES that I only want a Nintendo console.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

Seeing graphics and sound haven't really improved from 7th to 8th gen, and online connectivity can't improve that much, what else is there to make games better? The size of game maps increasing is bordering on making games dull and grinding, and different control interfaces like the Wiimote and Kinect have been generally panned by players, meaning developers are limited to two handed button pressing that doesn't allow for realism.

The only thing I can think that can really make games seem more exciting is to increase the amount of storyline and deviation due to your actions. Imagine a game like Mass Effect where every single little action or piece of conversation you had altered the game you were playing, not just superficially but in depth. There is definitely enough memory space for these sort of games, but of course to do this would take a lot more man hours and money. And can current gen games really justify larger budgets? And could they justify thousands of scenarios that the player may never see?

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

Um... no. You're wrong.

They haven't improved if you compare something like Arkham City with physx + DX 11 on a PC to a so called next gen game.

I always forget how some people can have such narrow views of things. I think every gen there is a crowd that says it's the same old thing, we've peaked, or that innovation is dead but then every cycle proves all of these ideas to be wrong as we go. Graphics get much improved, games get bigger with more choices, new styles of gameplay are introduced, and innovative games are released.

Bit quick to pull the trigger of judgement this far in. Launch titles are not the defining measure of a console and anyone that's into gaming should have the patience needed to wait for the console to mature some.

Same stuff was said at the start of 7th gen and look how things turned out, people just never give it enough time.
