At least Microsoft is trying to get exclusives. Lord knows their console needs a reason to exist...

Of course, placing bets on when it comes out on PC.

Personally, I think this is awesome. I'm glad to start seeing some true differences in exclusives between PS4 and Xbox One. Reminds me a bit of the old days. Gosh, I remember when Resident Evil 4 was exclusive to GameCube. I didn't really have access to the internet back then, but boy I still knew how upset people were.

@kkslider5552000
Sounds like you don't own the console, bud. It's pretty awesome, especially if you hook it up through an HD TV to make the most of all the entertainment integration it has. Oh, and Forza, Ryse, Halo, Spark, Fable, Max, ...

All in all though I think this is a smart business move on Microsoft's part. Exclusive games sell consoles (assuming this game does not end up on PC). Personally when I'm considering getting a game console, my decision always lies on which console has the best exclusives or has the exclusive that interest me the most. This is probably good for M$, but bad for SE. But hey, it's not like SE didn't receive a good sum of money from M$

No.

The game was a polished action/shooter with high expectations that sold around a million and a half copies spread across 100 million PS3s and 360s upon its release. It bombed and was a niche title, hence the reluctance by other publishers to invest in a sequel. Nintendo grabbed it up to diversify their lineup.

The first game was a huge financial disappointment to all involved, that's why the sequel almost didn't see the light of day.

People talk about it being bad financial management that Tomb Raider only just scraped profitably, but it's guaranteed that Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze have all cost Nintendo a lot more money to development/fund than they made back.

^ Guaranteed? Super Mario 3D World sold over 2 million copies already. I find it hard to believe it has not reached the "break even" point. A Nintendo AAA game has a much lower budget than Tomb Raider.

At the same time, it seems that many publishers are hoping for GTA/Call of Duty-like sales on every game. Even several million is disappointing

Tomb Raider uses the tressfx middle war for the hair stuff so it wasn't building a new engine, but using PC middleware.

Seeing that Sony have had a lot of developers say that the PS4 is the preferred platform for their games (primarily Arkham and Metal Gear), Sony games have had to do very little to sell their console since launch- which is lucky for them because they can't throw money at things due to the Mother company. But I question are Sony resting on their Laurels a bit? The reliance on 3rd party and in-house remakes is far more visible than Xbox for some reason, perhaps because 10 million people are scrutinising PS4 instead of 4 million for the XB1. I don't think too many PS fans care that much about losing Tomb Raider, more that they haven't got a 3rd party game that he XB1 hasn't got, and know Sony can't afford to buy one.

Microsoft are in a similar position to Nintendo, they need to spend money to make people notice. Nintendo have invested in a few 3rd party games, a couple still unannounced and log jammed the Wii U with Nintendo IP all the way through next year. Microsoft have bought Lara for next Christmas. I just question if by Christmas 2015 they'll already be out of the race, and will another open world shooty game on it's 3rd iteration in 4 years since reboot really be the draw to get people to buy an XB1? And even if they buy another 3 or 4 games similar to this, will the XB1 make it's money back after spending so much of it's budget with such little return?

Speculation is fun!

Funny story. The first game I thought was extremely mediocre... really established all the bad stuff in the modern games. Just grinding through with the arrows and some jumping/climbing until the end. Very unenjoyable so I don't think anyone is missing anything.

I got to agree with this. I gave the game a try, and at first I liked it quite a bit, but it settles in pretty quickly that hardly anything is really going on in the game. The world is huge and the graphics are decent, but there's hardly anything to do, and the backtracking is beyond stupid.

I gave the game a try, and now I'm done,

Also, the online multiplayer was full of people trying to boost their gamerscore, so I was like "Screw this."

For once, I actually agree with you two. I really don't get what all of the hype was about for the game, I could never get into it.

Speaking of the online, my brother was playing it once. He says he was in 1st or 2nd place, and after killing somebody countless times, the dood had to tell him "Oh, I'm just warming up for Call of Duty!".

You forgot to mention how Square Enix expects it to sell 10 million copies, then will be disappointed with everyone else when it doesn't reach that number

that's what i didn't understand. the last one all they did was complain how "tomb raider sells over 4 million, SE not pleased", I'm like!!?!?!?
and now they limit it to 1 console, and the console that's 3rd (last) in install base? okay....
