Topic: MSX General Discussion

So its been a while that I made a thread and to many its good news but to me, its more upsetting. But I was doing some research of a certain computer called MSX.

MSX is a brand of computers that are made in Japan even though Microsoft was involved with it. It was made as means of appealing the market to Japan like the ones that US have like Commodore, Apple etc.

What's interesting is that the MSX has a lot of games that seriously need to be considered to be moved to the west. This is where companies like HAL, Konami and Hudson started off making games. Unfortunately, its impossible because many companies went bankrupt and the MSX computers are very scarce unless you're lucky enough to get them. You're only option to play these games on MSX is emulation similar to how many arcades can't be played.

The most recent game that I played is La-Mulana. Granted, its not exactly an MSX game but seeing as how it uses the MSX logo and heavily borrows elements from Maze of Galious which is a game made by Konami on an actual MSX system, I don't see why it can't be called as such.

So basically, this is a thread to discuss about MSX games in general. So if you're one of those people who like me are interested in talking about it or you like me just love the creativity the MSX has to offer, then post here.

One thing to note, the reason why I didn't post MSX on PC gaming is because like Commodore, the MSX is its own brand and has its own cart slot and as such, seeing as how every PC is common, I don't think discussing this over there makes any sense.

I feel the MSX looks very underrated as there are lots of games that I'd want to see remake on. Like for instance Xak: The art of visual stage.

Currently listening to Xak: The art of visual stage music......so beautiful....

And listening to Salamander music....so epic.....

Hopefully, devs need to relive the MSX games to the modern times. While I can easily use emulators to play these, I feel guilty for doing that.

Also, listen to this carefully.

Can the Nes do the same tune as this? Because it sounds to me like it can. Well obviously, the Famicom can do it but what about the original NES?

@bezerker99: Yeah. Both in terms of gameplay and story. I can't believe that you don't face Metal Gear in the nes version unlike the MSX one.

You know, before Star fox gave a reason why shoot em ups should exist in the market, there was a time where Aleste on MSX went popular.....sadly, Compile went bankrupt and while they were able to make a spiritual company called Compile Heart, the staff behind Aleste had the rights of Aleste and formed Milestone Inc which went bankrupt because the CEO did illegal activites and so the entire company went down because of him.

Interesting thing to know that Compile made Puyo Puyo and they can't get that back because of SEGA owning it........yeah. Kinda one reason to go angry at SEGA if they aren't releasing that latest game to the west. >:<

MSX was a brand name for a type of computer. Those computers were produced by several companies.
They were released in the west, it sounds like. Just not North America.

So here's an interesting fact. The MSX and TRON are the only Japanese computers that have CPU's that were built in Japan. All other computer CPU's in Japan are built by foreigners.

So where can I get these MSX machines? I know they are produced by various companies but when I check them at amazon or ebay, they aren't around one bit.....

EDIT: Ok so I found some but they are too expensive. So I guess the only option is to either get them legit somehow or use emulation as means. But the thing that I want to know is ethically, would it be acceptable? I mean literally, I don't want to feel bad like how I did for Nintendo and I promised myself that I would never emulate games ever.

Ok so quick question. The MSX2 is backwards compatible with MSX games right? If so, then where can I get MSX2?

Also, there's an official emulator. So does that mean the Roms are also official? I don't get that.

wow.....I guess the MSX doesn't have any love here around Nintendolife. Still though, I'll keep updating this forum with posts. I somehow feel the MSX is really an underrated brand.

So many of the MSX games are available through Project EGG. The main problem here is that its all Japanese and while that might not be a big issue for some, the fact that you need to pay monthly fee for this is ridiculous. Why can't it be like STEAM. But even then, I don't know if it can accept internationally.
