It's legacy. Lol its legacy in gaming really helps it.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

I shall pose two options to you:

Would you rather have a huge roster with (more than likely) most charcters having similar fighting styles to keep the balancing under control?

Or, would you rather have a smaller roster with more unique fighting styles and have the balancing of each character easier to maintain?

I'd go with the latter personally. To be fair, the only reason you'd buy Mortal Kombat now is to play around with new fighting mechanics and the new fatalties and brutalities. As long as the roster is diverse enough, the fighting styles are unique between each character and the game is well balanced, I don't really care.

My brother got me to play them a lot. I can assure you they're fun for people who don't play to any degree of competitiveness. I actually preferred playing them alone, because most of my matches with my bro were either: Pointless because I chose a character who sucked (i.e. every character who isn't a main villain or a Saiyan in the Budokai games), or just my brother making me fight his max level custom character (especially Super Saiyan 4 Vageta and Raiden...) just so he could see how many punches he could take before he got bored and smashed me into the ground.

Budokai is really more about accord which characters you're gonna choose. In MK:A i was actually able to win with any character i picked up. Yes, it's all about skills. However, MKX is missing too many characters. Also Goro is inside the game but locked for everyone who didn't preorder as you can see here http://gamingbolt.com/mortal-kombat-x-on-disc-dlc-confirmed . What is wrong with this people?

I don't get some people's obsessions with large rosters in fighters. As long as the present roster has a diverse cast (as in, every character has a unique playstyle and approach), the number of possible combatants is completely irrelevant. Quite the opposite, overly large rosters have a strong tendency to mess up the balancing, and make the balancing process tedious and difficult. So, I'm very much in favour of this decision, despite not caring for Mortal Kombat in general.

I agree, my only issue with MKX is the price. $95 day one for everything.

My co-workers just told me the $30 Kombat Pack is basically their DLC Season Pass. So I don't have as big of a problem with it but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from it and will probably wait for a sale to buy it (if my computer can even run it)

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Keep in mind though, only four measly characters are actually confirmed at this point, which definitely is way too expensive. In addition, there's a lot of controversy surrounding the title right now (microtransaction madness, messy PC port, false claims from developers), so the whole game is gonna have a hard time holding out for long enough.

Why? Just because you can play as Johnny Cage and rip your own daughter's body apart with your bare hands, then jokingly reenact a scene of The Shining using the gaping hole in her body and her exposed spine?

Frankly, Mortal Kombat has become completely uninteresting for me. I just can't find any sort of enjoyment in stuff like the scene I described above. Yeah, I used to play the SNES instalments back in the day, but hey, I was a pre-teen.

That's definitely the worst fatality in the game, even though just about every one was absolutely gruesome. I'm equally surprised that this game is getting an M-rating, that's for sure.

The problem isn't necessarily the quantity. The problem is this smaller roster isn't quality enough to make up for it.

There's too many legacy characters and most of them aren't unique or interesting enough to justify their existence. Cassie Cage is the most well done of these characters but she is the literal combination of Sonya and Johnny and should have replaced at least one. Outside of their fighting styles, Takeda and Kung Jin couldn't be more bland if they tried. One is typical A-hole with daddy issues and the other is typical thief looking for redemption. Both come free with similar vanilla looks and wangst. Jacqui is the worst off, she has neither a personality, a compelling look, OR a unique fighting style. She couldn't even be a good Jax replacement because he's on the roster too!

The non-legacy characters are better but not perfect. Kotal Kahn, Ferra/Torr and Erron Black are all interesting and cool in concept but were a let down in Story mode. It's hard to view them as anything other than fillers that'll barely matter past this game. D'vorah they got completely right though. THAT is how you make a new character. Her fighting style is different, flashy, and smooth as butter, her appearance is striking and unlike any other MK character, and her role in the story was a good indicator that she'll be someone to watch out for in the future. If more of the new additions were handled like her, I would have less issues with how the roster turned out.

Just about all of the returning characters are beloved series staples so not too many complaints there. However, there are still things in question: Since apparently dying in story or being revenants doesn't disqualify characters from being on the roster, what were the reasons Baraka, Sindel, and Rain didn't make it when there's models and movesets for them? Why is there not even ONE cyborg on the roster when we have a Lin Kuei faction and NRS knows how popular they are? Oh wait, I already know the answer: so they can sell us overpriced DLC packs of these characters later. But hey, that $30 season pass sounds like a steal compared DoA5's whopping $92. Isn't next gen gaming wonderful?

All that said, the game is honestly fantastic. The underwhelming roster and the future DLC raping it's hinting are just two of the few issues I have with it.

One good thing about this game being released is Xinput fightpad's being available again for somewhat sane prices.

You forgot the part where Armaggadon was an unbalanced mess of a game. Doesn't matter how many people you toss into it if the game sucks.

Though i will say large rosters can be diverse if the people know what they are doing. I want to give Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 it's due. I believe that game has a pretty diverse roster inspite of it's large roster.

though the overbundance of DLC is shameful. How long has this game been released?

From a balancing perspective I expect a small roster whenever a new engine is used. Now when the sequel comes out if it uses the same engine the roster should be expanded. I think a lot of people assume that just because they had every character plus the kitchen sink in some older titles that it should automatically be the same for a new release. New engine, new balancing tweaks... less time to make a huge roster. Happens every time. I suppose at least they already have plans to expand the roster via the Kombat Pack.

Then you create a system with different levels of fighters. It worked for DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3. And with its approx 168 different fighters (okay there might be about 12 gokus, but their levels and movesets are different) there are 28224 different one on one combinations and a whopping 15882660998052213657600 possible 5 on 5 combinations. Will I ever use them all? No, but the ability to do so is amazing.

Yeah, but over 95% of them are useless because the Dragon Ball fighters have the balancing of a family-size pizza with diet coke.

I don't get your analogy. How is any fighter useless? Because some characters are straight out stronger than others? So what? You just need to be better and smarter, this isn't a fighting game you win by button mashing, which is how a fighting game should be.

No matter how good one can be, certain characters will always be overpowered. For Dragon Ball, it's always the sayians - huge defense, massive Ki power, insane super armor, and finishers that devour most of your lifebar with ease. On the other hand, we have recurring lethal joke Hercule Satan, who can't even get through any transformation with regular moves, Kuririn/Yamcha/Tienshinhan as some of the most powerful humans who still die from one Final Flash in most iterations, and useless minions like Saibamen, Cell Jr., or Radditz. It always boils down to sayians being completely overpowered versus whatever villain is representing the antagonist side of the specific game. The only ones actually messing with this are Beerus and Whis in Xenoverse, who can easily spam some of the strongest Ki Blasts in the game.

I finally got around to watching the Fatal 8 last night. Pretty awesome. Didn't think I'd see a Scorpion player in the finals after MK9 but the variations seem to be doing their job. Interesting that two players went with Kung Jin but I remember my brother saying during his chapter that he really liked how the character played.

The YT comments are hilar, Ryu's old avatar sums up some of them but there's some legit debate whether Erron Black needs to be nerfed or if Sonic Fox is really just that good. It'd be interesting to see how this develops.

I would ask the bigger question of why Mortal Kombat; a game all about killing characters, can never get rid of anyone permanently? They just keep getting reincarnated. I think it lessens the impact of the game where everyone is apparently fighting Immortal Kombat.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?
