I thought they owned in all along. GoW always came up in exclusive IP arguments in Sony vs MS fanboy battles. On that note, funny how both Sony and MS have an exclusive "GoW" franchise that is entirely dull on every conceivable level.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
Nah Gears wasn't owned by MS. Iirc Cliffy B didn't like working with the PS3 hardware (like other developers) so that's why Gears always stayed on the 360. I guess now that the PS4 and Xbox One are similar MS was nervous that Gears could come to the PS4 thus losing one of their well known exclusives.

I loved the first Gears multiplayer for it's slower pace and close combat, but I didn't like the changes they made since. Respawns and a larger variety of long-distance weapons just made it feel less and less unique. Black Tusk have some talented people working there though, so I'll definitely give any new game a chance, but I wish they'd just create a new IP. That's what is great about that first year of a new gen on non-Nintendo consoles, all the people creating new stuff because they don't want to risk their big names. We might not see that so much this time, as they started out with cross-gen ports, and sales of both consoles have been so good, they'll probably jump to their big name IPs much sooner than planned.

I liked the first one (was the first 'system seller' on the 360), beat then sold the second one in the span of a week and haven't touched anymore Gears games since. Not terrible games, but I didn't get into the multiplayer and after one play through, I never felt like going back to them. Good for Microsoft though, as its still a major franchise that can be depended on to sell well.
I honestly thought Microsoft already owned it since the beggining..... well since it never left the XBox anyway it'll change nothing.
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

What's the point of this? Gears of Wars was already an exclusive.
Epic Games made Gears, but they were done with the series, so Microsoft bought the IP off them and passed it on to a new studio who will continue the franchise.
The 1st Gears game was great. It had the best environments and had the right "feel". Once they got to the second one, the story became more fleshed out, and it didn't really have that mystery appeal, anymore. The gameplay and graphics improved for every entry, which is definitely a good thing, but the story wasn't really a mystery, and the characters attitudes changed throughout the series(not a good thing).
If you compare the 1st game to the 3rd game, the changes are pretty drastic. This is my opinion. I used to play the 3rd one online, everyday. Hopefully, they can fins a good way to use the IP, because I would say that it has hit a pretty big roadblock, in terms of creativity. The war ended in the 3rd one, so there has to be something new, or recycle what they already had. The same could be said for Halo, to an extent.

Epic seems to be getting out of the AAA game business in favor of free to play Mobile and PC games for the Chinese market.
Just look at their past decisions and how much talent had left the company. They've killed pretty much every core single player game and the only projects they have is multiplayer games.

Eh there's nothing stopping then from going years in the future, or this being a while another universe or planet.
The same can't be said about Halo bcause from the ouset it was a big universe. There were books and comics from the ouset and the human-Covenant War was only one part if the universe with Master Chef arubky being the least ontresting part.

A first party game is any game where the platform holder owns the IP.
Not to mention Microsoft has like six or more active development studios. Please watch the profanity, i'm pretty sure you can't blame your autocorrect for that one — TBD
@shingi_70 I knew it was an exageration when they said Microsoft has no 1st party!
sad thing it's mostly stuff that doesn't interest me...

I only mentioned the "big name" Xbox exclusives (nobody buys an Xbox only to play ilomilo and LocoCycle). I didn't mention the excellent Fable series because I completely forgot that Lionhead Studios is owned by Microsoft
But isn't that pretty much saying that Nintrndi only rleies on Mario, Zelda, and Wii insert verb here.

This is almost exactly what happened with me as well.
Big fan of the Gears series and I like this move by Microsoft. Ive been saying since the reveal of the Xbox One that they need to secure some of these exclusives for the long run and even try to buy out some of the more smaller struggling companies in order to truly compete with Sony with software sales. Who knows, maybe they will do just that and go after Capcom next. They don't exactly have to buy them out, they could just arrange some sort of partnership where Capcom develops the games and Microsoft publishes them sort of like they did with Dead Rising 3.
