That's actually pretty cool. I'd say it's a good thing, as I found the characters in the original Lost Planet pretty blah. I mean the GOW characters aren't triumphs in design but at least they're somewhat memorable.

If you preorder it, you get to play as one of the guys from Resident Evil, but that is for both versions I think. I don't know the name, I don't like Resident Evil. He is the guy with blond hair in the pictures. I don't think that Capcom is doing anything special with the PS3 version.

Anyway, I can see them announcing Killzone characters for the PS3 version. I don't think Nathan Drake really fits into the Lost Planet universe, he is a treasure hunter, not a soldier.

This is stupid. Now it doesn't feel like Lost Planet and it feels more of like a CAPCOM imagination of Gears of War, ugh....
It isn't required. They are DLC characters, and I think it was confirmed that the story has absolutely nothing to do with them. Capcom is just being smart, they know that Gears is bigger than Lost Planet so they are using them to advertise their game.
