Topic: Let's Talk About Your Favourite Games of the Year!

Posts 1 to 20 of 49

Peek-a-boo

Now that we are only a couple of weeks away from the year 2016, I thought today is a good day as any to compose about our favourite games this year, whether it is on a Nintendo system (be it a console or handheld) as well as those you have played on PC, PlayStation 4, PS Vita and the Xbox One.

I can think of ten games that I have purchased, played and enjoyed this year across my 3DS, PlayStation 4 and Wii U.

01) My favourite is 'Bloodborne' because it takes nearly everything that was great about both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls and makes it even better, especially the fast-paced visceral combat and the eerie cosmic Cthulhu creature designs.

Father Gascoigne is not only one of the best bosses in the whole Souls series, he is also a haunted character with his own backstory. This is left to us to piece the story together, which involves his family before he became a beast.

It's the little things like this that makes Bloodborne a very, very special game indeed.

02) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Quiet and her 'reason' for barely wearing any clothes and the sore lack of a cohesive and conclusive third act asides, it is the greatest feeling and the most playable Metal Gear Solid game yet.

The open world does feel somewhat empty however, you are never far away from beginning a story mission that provides an abundance of variety. This game is also excellent value for money; £50 for 70-odd hours (and counting) is rather fantastic.

03) Life is Strange - while the fifth and final episode couldn't quite live up to its sky high anticipation, especially the closing ten, fifteen minutes, you cannot deny that it is an excellent original series and one that is now the benchmark for episodic games.

It's also one of the most interesting games in years. I am going to miss Chloe and Max...

As for the rest:

04) Rocket League - this is the best PS+ contribution since PS+ first begun!
05) Splatoon - the freshest new IP to come out of Nintendo for a very long time.
06) SOMA - story wise, this kept me thinking about the game long after it had finished.
07) Until Dawn - it's like an adults-only Scooby Doo mystery, with lots of replayability.
08) Her Story - a detective game like no other, and Sam's story is an engrossing one.
09) Everybody's Gone to the Rapture - audiovisual and narrative excellence; Father Jeremy's story is almost a religious experience in itself.
10) Pac-Man 256 - an 'endless runner' Pac-Man game? It shouldn't work, but it really does!

Over to you guys! What were amongst your favourite games in the past year, and why?

I will just list my top 3 and yes they are all on PS4 since that's what I mostly played.

1. Rocket League — Same reason as just about everyone else. This game took me by surprise it's just so perfect. Easy to pick up, hard to put down, tons of customization on the vehicles, offline and online play. Yeah it's great.

2. Mortal Kombat X — This game was just a huge surprise. I haven't enjoyed an MK game like this since MK3. Much liRocket League it just great all around. I enjoy most of the characters it's easy enough for casual fighting game fans to enjoy yet it's complex enough for veterans. The various game modes are great too.

3. Transformers Devestation — OMG it's the Transformers game that all us 80's kids have been waiting for. Just another solid game from Platinum. Yeah most people complained about the length but honestly it didn't bother me that much.

From a solely Nintendo point of view , it has to be Splatoon for me..
A Damn fine multiplayer online experience , the single player mission is slightly lacking but the game is all about the online element.
Funny thing is I nearly skipped the game as I didn't like the look of the game but my kids persuaded me and all I can say now is thanks Guys

1) Bloodborne I'm with you on this. I absolutely love everything this game offers, from the gameplay, the level design, the visuals, the music, the story and how it all pulls together into something I'm not going to forget for a long time. Yharnam is one of the best settings in a game I've seen in a long time, and I can easily immerse myself in it time and time again, even though I've already seen everything it has to offer. And the final boss fight (well, second to last, I guess) was beautiful, in the battle, the visuals, the music and the story. Easily one of the best experiences I've ever had in a game.

Also the DLC was brilliant. A lot of content on offer and it only added to the overall game. I'd probably consider Bloodborne my second favourite game of all time. Just behind...

2) Majora's Mask 3D Majora's Mask is my all time favourite game. The story, the setting, the characters and how they all react to the fact that they're going to die, I love it all, and it's all wrapped up with Zelda gameplay to make something really special to me.

Perhaps I'm cheating by including a remake on my list, but I love Majora's Mask so much that having it on a handheld is a big deal to me. I don't know whether I prefer this to the original based on a few changes (such as the swimming mechanics and the boss changes) but I love it all the same.

3) Undertale This game has a lot of heart that I don't think I've seen in a game before. Nearly every single character is completely memorable, the battle system is a nice take on the usual turn based battle system, the music is incredible, and the story is phenomenal in my eyes (I may have shed a few tears over this game, not gonna lie). It's one of the few games I've seen where the 'your choice effects the game' actually works really well, and the relatively short play time allows for multiple play throughs to see the effects that your choices can have. And it's cheap too.

4) Super Mario Maker I'll keep this short and just say that it's a pretty cohesive tool to make your own Mario levels, while still being simple and accessible to make it fun.

5) Xenoblade Chronicles X I've only had this for a week, so this may be a bit premature to list it this high, but I'm really liking what I've seen so far. It did take a while for the tutorials to finish, and it does take a while to learn how the game works, but get passed that and it's so amazing. The world of Mira is beautiful, and I'm really enjoying just aimlessly wandering to see it all. The combat is a nice evolution of Xenoblade's system, and the addition of Skells really changes things up. However, I wouldn't say this is as good as the first Xenoblade, which was more accessible, but it's still a fantastic game in it's own right.

Honourable mentions

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain I have mixed feelings about this game. The gameplay was the finest MGS experience yet, but it's down to a few different factors that take away from the experience for me. The FOB system was unneccassary, and felt tacked on just to have some sense of online play. The story didn't quite reach the same levels as other MGS games, and the fact that the story wasn't properly concluded put a huge downer on the experience for me. Still, a good send off for Kojima.

Splatoon A fantastic take on the online shooter that I really need to play more of. Would probably be higher on my list if I did.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D Another game that we've seen already, but Xenoblade works perfectly on a handheld, especially with all those missions...

Monster Hunter 4U I had a lot of fun playing through this with friends, and easily my favourite Monster Hunter game.

Codename S.T.E.A.M. A few months ago and I wouldn't have considered this game at all. I'd played through the first few tutorial levels and it hadn't clicked with me so I just forgot about it. I was bored so I gave it another go about a month back and I was hooked. A really underrated game, and I'd love to see more.

Yes, I like bears.

Really, really fell in love with Transistor. I know it came out last year, but I only played it this year; so it's my favorite played game this year.

Edit: Oh; also Splatoon and MH4U.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U) - A very early release in Europe; I actually received the game on the last day of 2014, even though it wasn't supposed to come out until January 2. Somehow I liked this more than 3D World, and I wished there were more levels. Combining platformer elements with puzzle elements wrapped up as one big adventure featuring Toad with its annoying voice was more enjoyable than I thought it could be.

Splatoon (Wii U) - Definitely my most played game this year. I'm still enjoying it from time to time. It's one of the few games that I actually like to play online. It's a unique and refreshing idea, plus all the free content the game is getting deserves a mention as well.

Xeodrifter (PS4) - Finally got to play this game, it was short, but good. Pretty difficult and unforgiving.

It's been quite an ''empty'' year. I finally got to play Journey on the Collector's Edition, that was a pretty great experience. I enjoyed Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush as well, I really liked that game. Fez was amazing as well, but that game had been out for a while as well. Other than that, there's not a whole lot worth mentioning. I haven't played Bloodborne yet, and Xenoblade X still hasn't arrived. Mario Maker was okay, but not something I spent a whole lot of time on. Yoshi's Woolly World was enjoyable, but Tropical Freeze is still the better 2D platformer on the Wii U. Currently playing the Uncharted Collection, so who knows how much I like those games when I'm done.

@Peek-a-boo: wow someone actually enjoyed Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. Huh. Until Dawn too, I'm looking forward to getting that soon personally. I wonder how your list would have figured if The Order 1886 wasn't a mediocre 5-6 hour game, you could have had all of Sony's main releases this year in one list! Spooky!

Me personally, restricting it to games that released this year, as I've played many great games from other years for the first time recently, I would give mentions to:

. The Witcher 3
. Splatoon
. Star Wars Battlefront
. Bloodborne
. Super Mario Maker
. Rare Replay (it counts damn it!)
. Metal Gear Solid V
. Nintendo Badge Arcade
. Animal Crossing amiibo Festival.

Yes the last two were jokes. I haven't played Xenoblade Chronicles X, Rise of the Tomb Raider or Undertale yet, and I'm 99.9% sure they would warrant mention if I'd have played them by now. Oh and Monster Hunter 4 is excellent, I just haven't played it as much as I should've, hence the non-inclusion.

1) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D (3DS): It was my first time playing MM, and I wasn't expecting much, because I wasn't a huge fan of Ocarina of Time, but I ended up getting completely absorbed by this eerie, nightmarish little game. It barely even feels like a Zelda game most of the time.

The unique gameplay mechanics are fantastic. The constantly ticking clock really adds a sense of tension to everything you do, and I love how, instead of just acquiring new equipment to progress, you actually adopt the forms of dead creatures. I also really like how the game focuses on the lives of the people around you. The initially off-putting and carnivalesque Termina began to feel strangely intimate the more I learned about the people living in it. It's so much more compelling than a magic tree sending you off on a quest to gather some convenient macguffins.

If this isn't my favorite Zelda game now, then it is an incredibly close second.

2) Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS): I've played 100+ hours of almost nothing but the single-player campaign so far, and I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface of this game. The combat mechanics are tight. the gameplay incredible, and visually it's spectacular. It looks like I'm playing an Xbox 360 game on my N3DS, which impresses me. I especially love the manual camera control and more detailed textures when you play it on a N3DS as opposed to a normal 3DS.

3) Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls (Vita): I was concerned how well this series would hold up transitioning to a third-person shooter format, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that, aside from a few hiccups, this game played marvelously. Despite the subject matter and environment being as dreadful as anything I could possibly imagine being in a video game, everything is so stylized and unique that I couldn't help but look forward to finding out what other events would transpire, no matter how horrifying or taboo they might be.

Beyond the obvious darkness of the game, I really enjoyed the way Komaru and Toko's relationship evolved over the course of the story, going from an uneasy alliance to being good friends who seem to understand and care about oneanother. The cameos from DR2 were also a lot of fun to catch.

4) Splatoon (Wii U): I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this, as competitive shooters aren't typically my thing. The sheer imagination and weirdness involved probably helped, though. This is the bravest and least conservative Nintendo has been in years, and I love it.

5) Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson (3DS): A fast and gloriously shameless brawler that I've had a lot of fun with. The plot wasn't as good as the original, but the game's performance is SO much better. Also, the expanded dressing room options and AR stuff were fun to play around with.

i can't even recall many games i have played this year and most of them were older ones so my list is very short. i think there was only one game i played that was actually released this year but oh man what a game it was.
Metal Gear Solid V - The Phantom Pain
yes i know the game is incomplete, i watched the videomaterial of the missing mission. still this is an amazing game and it became my second favourite game of all time, right behind the first MGS. even though i was expecting something very different from the story (like we all did i think), in the end i am in love with the ending of the second chapter of the game. i did not see that coming and i was stunned by it. i am very thankful for this game and the entire metal gear franchise. Mission 43 "Shining Lights, Even in Death" is the most amazing videogame experience ever. incredible!
oh and this game has the best stealth mechanics ever!!!

Undertale, Xenoblade X and Splatoon are literally the only new games I've played this year.

Granted, I'm not sure I needed a fourth game if I have these three but still...

1. Splatoon - I wasn't even hyped for this game after the E3 reveal, but it gradually seemed more interesting to me, and when it arrived it was on sale on the eShop, so I bought it on a whim. It blew me away, and I put it at number 1 because of the fun single player campaign, and endless online fun. Even though I easily tire from this game, I always get back to it after a short hiatus.

2. Captain Toad - This game is brilliant. I really hope they do a sequel sometime in the near future, with double the content! My only complaint about this game is how short it is. I really enjoy the combination of puzzle and platforming, it brings back memories of Super Mario 64, but it doesn't test my patience as much because of the smaller and cleaner level design. Not saying Super Mario 64 is bad, I just really enjoy the cube design of Captain Toad.

3. Xenoblade Chronicles X - Whenever I play this game time just flies. My only issue with it so far is that whenever I take on a story mission I seem to be under leveled. It surely is my own fault, because I can only handle so much exploration before I lose mye patience, but I really wish the story missions could at least state the average level of the enemies encountered during the missions.

4. Yoshi's Woolly World - This game got me interested in trying other Yoshi games. I don't know why, but I don't enjoy them. This game however is brilliant! And I spent almost 40 hours completing it, which is such a brilliant length for a puzzle platformer. This game really tested my patience with some of the longer levels, but overall it was worth it.

5. Super Mario Maker - I've clocked over 70 hours into this game, but I'm really bored with it. It takes too long to make a good level, and the rewards aren't enough since it's so tough to get noticed. The challenges soon became boring too, due to all the horrible levels out there. I feel lucky if I get a decent level during a challenge. Still a great game though.

I haven't bought that many new games this year. I've been prioritizing the virtual console and working on my backlog. But these 5 are my favorites out of the ones I played.

Um...UM...I DON'T KNOW! Let's see...on Nintendo I've got Super Mario Maker, Splatoon, Wooly World, MM 3D, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and on PC...Undertale. That is literally the only game I've gotten on my PC this year. Granted, it's a great game, but I feel like I should've played some more games on my computer so that I could add more to that list..

There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...

I should preface by saying that the number of games I played this year that were actually published in 2015 is pretty small. Of those, my two personal favorites are Splatoon and Xenoblade Chronicles X, without batting an eye. Picking between those two, though, would cause a lot of eye-batting. Called twitching. My eyes would twitch if I had to pick, is what I'm saying.
