I think many people have better opinions than I do D:

of course I guess that's also just my opinion

I've wanted this game ever since I got a PS3, but haven't had the chance to pick it up yet. I actually watched an entire let's play of it before I even thought about getting a PS3 and loved it. I'm not one to think about plot holes and such D:

Your opinion is fine, but saying that the reason so many people praise the game is because they supposedly are less "veteran" in the subject as you is an insulting opinion which you can keep to yourself. We get it; it was not to your expectations. Fortunately, some people do not have the same expectations and opinions, and allowed a good game to sell well.

Well, it's a shame you think it's insulting, it's not meant to be.

Heavy Rain is indeed Interactive Drama, and the first trophy obtained in the game is entitled "Interactive Drama", and the description for the trophy is "Thank you for supporting Interactive Drama". Heavy Rain isn't suppose to be a game in the likes of Uncharted 2, Bioshock,etc. It's nearly incomparable to other games on the market with exception to a few I've played through like Indigo Prophecy, Siberia and Dreamfall.

Heavy Rain is flawed, but very few games will take gamers emotions on a roller-coaster the way this game does. Heck, I felt like I needed a bottle of antidepressants to get me through a few segments of the game. I think it's safe to say that people who get really drawn into books and movies will get the most out of Heavy Rain, but if you play games for action and gameplay, this just isn't for you at all. It was a niche title the day it released.

@James
My thoughts exactly. And I actually did read your review of Heavy Rain back when it was first posted on Movemodo. It was one of the reviews that pushed me to give it a shot. And as much as I didn't like the game over all, I'm incredibly glad that I played it.

Now, I will say that if there's one thing that people say to try and defend this game that I can not stand it's the old "well, all games have bad stories. And every story is flawed."

Please. Even if the majority of games have bad stories, few games are stories that profess to revolutionize storytelling. Heavy Rain's experience is the story; it's all about the mystery and character development. The game had two jobs to do: give us a great story, and great characters. Forget controls and QTEs--if this game had a cohesive and consistently gripping narrative with characters that I could care about, I would have played the crap out of it. It failed. The story is a broken mess and the characters, aside from the two I mentioned previously, are either one-note mopers or just so poorly acted and stupid that I just genuinely didn't care about their well-being.

But like James said, when Heavy Rain hits the nail on the head, it hits it hard. I don't think I had ever actually been on the edge of my seat playing a game, with my pulse pounding and mind racing, but Heavy Rain did that to me multiple times. There were also some genuinely touching moments; Ethan tucking his son in at night, or Scott Shelby cradling the baby to sleep (which seems disturbing in hindsight, but it was nice at the time). As I said earlier, if you take these scenes individually it's actually quite an interesting game.

And when you watch the scenes they left on the cutting room floor it can almost infuriates you. As far fetched as some of the ideas they had were, they would have at least covered up the plot holes. And if Sony would have let Quantic Dream continue to do DLC instead of implementing Move controls, maybe some of this stuff would be resolved.

@slapshot82
See, I felt like it was my love for books and movies that caused me to largely hate the game. I found myself thinking that no publishing company or movie studio would dare widely distribute something with so many plot holes and such weak writing. I really hope that Quantic Dream keeps making games, though. Heavy Rain was a pretty big success for them, and maybe now they'll be able to get the budget and time necessary to hire great actors and flesh out their stories a bit more.

BadCommando is still being silly. Nonetheless, I can definitely see the point of being more "veteran" to character and plot development having an effect. Kind of. Mainly because personal opinion exists.

I mean, if you find a new genre, and you like it, it's likely you'll be amazed at the first decent example you find of that genre that appeals to you. Final Fantasy VII is probably the most obvious example, most people who do praise it as one of THE best RPGs ever are the people who had never played any JRPGs (outside of maybe some really old, minimal plot ones) before that. There are plenty of genres that got life, or new life, because it became popular and almost regardless of the actual quality, it is well loved and remembered fondly because of that. Now for every example I would agree with there's one I disagree with.

anyway, my opinion on Heavy Rain...I'll give it credit for not being a generic shooter or half-ed cash-in. I can tell it was almost certainly meant to be a good game or interactive movie fiction land or whatever at least as much as a commercial success. And it has a decent amount of fans. I...just don't care about that game for that console I don't own that purposely isn't much of a game that might have a story that sucks.
