Topic: Let's talk about Heavy Rain

SPOILERS
I wanted to discuss Heavy Rain because, for better or worse, it's a game I can't stop stop thinking about. Even after I put the controller down out of sheer frustration months ago, the game, and more importantly the experience hasn't left my mind. This game could have been a masterpiece. It should have been a masterpiece. It just fails miserably to live up to its enormous potential.

The script is truly, offensively awful, for one thing. Stilted, uncomfortable dialogue runs rampant throughout, and the range of mediocre to bad performances couldn't pick up the slack; Scott and Madison being the slight exceptions. They were slightly above average, I'd say.

The real killer, though, is that the story just makes absolutely no sense. Plot holes a mile wide at every corner. What we have is a series of scenes that, taken individually, can actually be quite gripping, visually interesting and emotionally affecting. It just never ties together in a coherent and satisfying way.

That's my opinion, though. I know the game has more supporters than haters, and I've love to hear some of your thoughts on the game. I'd love to give it another shot if someone could convince me. What am I missing? Do some of these plot holes actually clear up with a little digging? Should a person who didn't care for Heavy Rain's execution even bother with Indigo Prophesy?

I loved Indigo Prophecy, but it is quite different from Heavy Rain in execution. Hard to describe really. It is more sci-fi mystery. I think less focus was on the different paths as there doesn`t seem to be huge differences between differing paths. I think I paid $5 for Indigo Prophecy, so at that price you might as well try it.

I've yet to finish it because of all the other game releases, but I have made it close to the end of the game. Many plot holes are tied up when playing through the game multiple times, but some are left wide open. Regardless though, I've thoroughly enjoyed the game, well as much as possible when your chopping off your fingers, and children are killed, etc, but it's not a game for everyone. Great game, but could have been better, but still a groundbreaking title nonetheless.

Games are pieces of entertainment that you play, and have full control over.
Interactive movies are movies that only continue playing after you press a button, and you get to set the remote down and watch.
Why do people get these two mixed up all the time?
DOOM II is a game, Super Mario 64, Uncharted, Phantasy Star, are games.
Dragon's Lair is not.

?...See thread title.

Back on topic: I think there's a chance I might enjoy it more now if I go back and play a second time, since I know exactly what to experience. I'll no longer be jarred by the terrible script and even worse acting.

@BedCommando Nobody actually mentioned interactive movies until you, so not quite sure what you meant there, but still.

I personally feel this is very flawed — sexist at times, with characters that are too flawed and some ropey animation — but I do have a soft spot for it all the same. It's one of very few games that's really made me jump and affected me psychologically (it melted my brainssss) and I think as a marker in the sand it's interesting to see where these kinds of games will evolve. Hopefully something like LA Noire will knock it out of the park, but we'll see.

so the game has terrible acting and script? So do 90% of games that try to have a good story.

Yep but that can usually be made up for by the gameplay!

@Chicken - Touche, Dragon's Lair is too hectic to put a remote down, that more falls into MGS4 territory

@Kid_ A & James - We're talking about Heavy Rain, which is an interactive movie, not a video game. To help show this, I gave examples of what differentiates the two.

Just so that this comment is all about replying to other comments about my..Whatever

I tried to get into this, since it was getting alot of attention I figured there had to be something good about it that will let me enjoy it. I did not find it. Instead, I found a game with horrendously awkward controls (Using a DS3, since Move wasn't out yet), terribly slow pacing, painful voice acting, and the entire game felt like a filler with no real beginning, middle or end.
How people claim they got gripped by this game is far beyond my comprehension. Maybe they're new to story-telling, or character development?
Whatever it is, I will never understand how anyone can call this product good.

What I mean to say is, after playing, watching, and reading so many different forms of media and entertainment, my expectations for certain aspects are alot higher then someone less veteran to the subject, which would be a solid reason why I couldn't enjoy something I viewed as flawed, while someone else enjoyed it.

Nearly every film, game, etc. has flaws, even the ones deemed "high quality" by its audience and critics. You're basically saying that because you've taken in a lot of media, that your opinion matters more and that people who liked this were some form of naive. Well if we're playing that game, I own over 300 movies and about 290 video games and I though Heavy Rain was very successful at what it wanted to do and completely matched my expectations out of it as well. And it's also a game, because in addition to button prompts, you do constantly move your character around each scene. Or do you also consider all adventure games "interactive movies?"

I'm well aware mostly anything has flaws, especially when it comes to anything dealing with technology. It's to be expected, but not in such great numbers like I find in Heavy Rain, which is why I don't like it.

Also, about my opinion meaning more, this may seem blunt, and rude, but of course my opinion over rides yours, or anyone else's. Just like yours over rides mine. No one's opinion is better than their own.

If you want to compare Heavy Rain to a title like Super Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie, you go right ahead.

Your opinion is fine, but saying that the reason so many people praise the game is because they supposedly are less "veteran" in the subject as you is an insulting opinion which you can keep to yourself. We get it; it was not to your expectations. Fortunately, some people do not have the same expectations and opinions, and allowed a good game to sell well.
