Topic: Let's Gather Around The Campfire - Share Your Gaming Memories

I've lit the fire. Come and share your gaming memory with others. I will start by sharing a story from 7 years ago.

I recently bought a used XBOX 360 and one of the games it came with was Portal 2. That made me want to share a funny memory I have of the original Portal. I feel a bit ashamed but I can't help but laugh at it now.

Back in 2010, when The Unofficial Steam Sales Thread had just started (it's currently 180 pages long), I read a post saying Portal is available for free for a limited time. I had heard of the name and knew it was supposedly good but I had no idea what kind of game it was. I was new to Steam, Portal might have even been my first Steam game, and I decided to try it out.

I played for a while and didn't really enjoy it. I also experienced something I had never experienced before: motion sickness. I had just read about a month ago of someone else on NL getting motion sickness from some other game. I didn't know it was possible to get sick by playing games. I shrugged and moved on. I'm glad I knew of its existence beforehand because it might have taken me a while to connect the dots of feeling ill to playing a specific game.

Yet I continued playing in short bursts to see for myself why the game was praised so much. After couple of days, I decided to talk about the game with my friend who also grabbed the game while it was free. I asked him: "How long do these tutorials last? I want to play the game already." He answered: "The tutorial was very short. Where are you at the moment?" I learned that the game is a puzzle game and I'd almost finished it already. I was really confused. The puzzles had been so easy that I didn't realize it was supposed to be a puzzle game. I thought it would be an FPS because that's what it looked like. I was really disappointed and stopped playing because I hadn't had fun playing it and it wasn't nice having stomach pains. I haven't touched the game since.

I have a lot more appreciation for Portal series today. I'll have to try out Portal again someday now that I have Portal 2 as well. I want to see if I can find more enjoyment now that I know what kind of game it is. I'm also interested to know if I still get stomach pains from playing it.

It's its, not it's.

when i was a little kid.. maybe 5 or 6, i remember renting Super Mario Bros 3, it must have just came out.. and when me and my dad were pulling up to our house all the neighbor kids were outside and i held up the game to the window to show them, feeling like the coolest kid in town especially so cuz all the kids were older than me. Of course they all come rushing over as I'm getting out the car.
Another time my brother took me to rent a game with my best friend (about 4-5 years older than me) and he had the best game in the world.. River City Ransom.. but i never owned it. Every time i went over to his house it's all i wanted to play.. so we're there looking at games to rent and i see RCR.. LOL it's all i wanted to get. He's like pleading with me "no no! I'll let you borrow it i promise! Get something else!"

Also back then was when i beat my first game all by myself. Super Mario Bros 1. I remember beating it and just scrambling into the living room where my parents were watching tv basically just hysterical, screaming at them about my accomplishment lol

In 2008 or 2009, a local electronics store called MediaMarkt was running a massive discount on Xbox 360 just on one single day. My dad was scheduled to meet his fellow sextons in a town about two hours away for their semi-annual get-together. But I so happened to fall ill this very day so he stayed at home to care for me. So he drove to the local MediaMarkt to get the very last Xbox 360 alongside copies of Viva Piñata and Sonic 06, the two games I‘ve always wanted for the system. Also before anyone asks, I was really sick that day, not just 'sick' but it‘s lucky how things go sometimes.

Viva Piñata has become one of my favorite games whereas Sonic 06 ... well, you probably heard of its legends ... As for the X360, it‘s the only Xbox I ever truly liked, and thinking about it, without it, I‘d never have played Blue Dragon or Tales of Vesperia, the two games that influenced me the most into becoming the rpg gamer I am today.

Here are couple more from me. Both about Pokémon.

I was training my Pokémon in the grass outside of Mt. Silver back when I first played Pokémon Gold. I'd already beaten Red and I was just evolving my Pokémon and also trying to get two Pokémon to level 100. My Typhlosion was level 96 and Corsola was 92. I went to Pokémon Center to switch some Pokémon. I decided to put my Typhlosion on the box to get room in my party. I did some box switching to find the correct Pokémon (remember when you had to save every time you changed boxes) and then I switched back to the box with Typhlosion to get it back. I chose Withdraw and the only option I got was Cancel. There were no Pokémon on that box. I backed out and saw the box saying there are Pokémon on it. I opened it again and still nothing. I lost every Pokémon I had on that box.

I was playing Platinum and encountered a shiny Graveler on Route 225. I was aware it might self-destruct. Yet, I decided to go for Ultra Ball instead of Master Ball. Capture failed and Graveler exploded. I'm not sure why I didn't just throw the Master Ball. I haven't even used one since Gen 2.

Maybe I'll share something more positive next time.

It's its, not it's.

My biggest memory was when the N64 was coming out, there was a Blockbuster about 2 blocks from my house that had a kiosk with Mario 64. I would go there every day after school and play for at least an hour, probably more. Then on Christmas I got my own N64 with Mario and didn't have to do that anymore, but it was a lot of fun.

@Late Major Kudos for using Corsola that much! I have always like it's design, but it's a hard Pokemon to actually use!

So here's a treasured gaming memory of mine. Back when I was a youngling I remember seeing one of my older friend's Game Boy Advance back when it was brand new. He showed me Advance Wars and let me try it. It was love at first sight for me. I begged my parents for it and I am pretty sure they asked my Friend's parents what on Earth I was talking about, since I had a Game Boy color.

Anyway, my parents got me both the game and system for Christmas, but not knowing much about games, they put Advance Wars out first for me to open. So I did and first thought, "oh no, I can't play it on my GBC!" before I realized there was another box to open which had the silver colored GBA in it waiting for me. And in the stocking my mother had put a big pack of AA batteries just for my new GBA. I think they lasted me a month. lol. I played that GBA until the A button nearly wore out. My parents jumped at the chance to get the GBA-SP a few years later, as it meant no more AA batteries would be needed for me. I will never forget that Christmas.

Side note, I probably burned through hundreds, maybe thousands of AA batteries between GBC and GBA.

4 years ago, on 28 August 2013 was my first time having an Original copy of 3DS game (LEGO CITY UNDERCOVER: The Chase Begin). Before that, i used to play Pirated copies games and modded machine, never thinked about to buy the Original copies. From first time buying an Original game, lead me to unexpected meeting with someone that changed my life forever, even better than before. From the meeting with someone that can help me to order Original games from playasia or Ebay, it changed my gaming experience completely. I felt blessed to have a chance to play and own Original machines and Original copies. Now, i don't want to play pirated games anymore, so i scrapped all my pirated games, donated to someone who meed those things. I start Clean Slate, back from Zero again for all my Wii & PS2 games. Now, for more than 4 years, i have collected more than 90 Nintendo games (3DS + NDS + Wii + Wii U + Gamecube + Switch) and 9 Playstation games (PS4 + PS2). For machines, i have owned a Pink x White 3DS XL, Pearl White New 3DS XL, White NDS Lite, White Wii, Black Wii U & White PS2 Slim Japan. Soon... i will buy Nintendo Switch before the end of year 2017.

Well, one time two of my friends where playing gamecube at my house (Smash Bros Melee), each one sitting in my beds (I had two in my room) when my Schnauzer, Shadow, managed to enter my house and went upstairs as fast as she could, got close to one of them ( the one that was extremely spoiled and fearful of everything) and she started mounting his leg in a frantic way (I never saw that happening, she was a female so I didn't even know that could happen). My friend started laughing and shouting to get her off him, and suddenly he just lost balance while sitting and he just layed down on the bed while Shadow was still holding his leg doing her thing. To be honest, I would have normally helped him instantly, but this was too hilarious to me and my other friend, which were about 12 at the time. It happened out of nowhere and honestly I didn't even noticed that this friend feared Shadow, since he knew her since she was a puppy and the guy was laughing too (now I know that he was laughing nervously). Anyway, we were laughing our asses of and then he offered us some of his Gameboy Advanced games if we took her of him so before I knew it, my other friend reacted and took her away, clearly motivated by the rewards. Just after this happened, the parents from my recently molested friend arrrived and he was so thankful that he gave us 5 GBA games to each one and ran away to his parents before I could even react. I kinda felt bad about taking his games so I tried to give them back the next day at school but he insisted me to keep them since he didn't give crap about his GBA anymore and he wanted to give them away anyway. By the way I may have described my friend as spoiled and fearful, but he is also an awesome guy, the kind of guy that gives a gift to someone with a dog that recently made love to his leg without his permission.

Anyway, I guess this was more a story about my dog, which I deeply miss, but still, there were games involved. By the way, if anyone is wondering, the games were: Super Mario World GBA version, Driver 2, Pokemon Ruby, a DBZ game that I don't remember the name, and Digimon Battle Spirit. I don't remember what games my other friend got.

Not many can say that his dog got him 5 GBA games. She even managed to beat cancer so that she could stay more years with us and she also kidnapped my neighbours for some hours one day, but that's a story for another day.

Two days ago I finished Cuphead with a friend. I will hold this memory dearly. That game should be tagged as psychological horror.

People actually discovered my thread. Great. I'd already let the fire die out. Thanks for relighting it.

@Heavyarms55 I usually only train Pokémon that evolve but back then I didn't know if Corsola evolved or not so I started training her. I figured out she wouldn't evolve at some point but I liked her so I kept her as part of my team. It's rare for me to keep any other Pokémon than my starter in my team for long period of time.

@Anti-Matter It's great you could finally enjoy playing games legally. I used to play games on an emulator when I was small. I played them without knowing what emulators actually were and that it was not acceptable to play games on them. At some point, I learned that I was actually playing console games on my computer. I ditched them once I finally got my first console. It's funny how I spent just as much time, if not more, playing NES, SNES, GB/C/A and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games than I did actual PC games. I never stopped to think why NES games looked the way they did. They were so fun that I didn't really care.

I guess I'll share another memory while I'm here. I really loved Contra: Hard Corps when I was 10-12 years old. I used to play it a lot with my friends. We were playing the Japanese version which had 3 hit points per life instead of dying from one hit. One day, we were playing it like usual when I discovered that you can actually go on different routes. The game was in Japanese so we had always just skipped the text as fast as we could so this new discovery was mind-blowing. We were so nervous to play a part of the game that we'd never seen even though we'd beaten the game multiple times before. We actually got to the end and saw a different ending. It was just so magical. Unfortunately, we never played Contra after that because we discovered it at a time when summer was just about to start and in autumn we'd all start junior high. For some reason, we started visiting each other less often after that.

I bought Contra: Hard Corps or Probotector as it's known here in Europe a year or two ago for my Mega Drive (probably the largest amount of money I've spent on a single game) and I was happy to see I could still beat the game after 10 years. Then I tried another route and got destroyed. It's not the same playing it alone, though. I wish I could play it with my childhood friends again.

It's its, not it's.

Some of my favs were not even playing games. I waited in line and with a friend for 10 hours for the OG Xbox and 27 hours for the 360. We had a blast camping out for them and was fun telling a dude who owned a local game store no when he offered to buy our spots in line from us. That same friend and I also played DOA 3 for 20 hours straight before giving into the zzz's.

When a friend of mine got a Saturn on launch day. We went to his house and I remember talking about how Clockwork Knight looked as good as Toy Story. When I got home I would not leave my parents alone about how I needed a Saturn.

Also the long nights spent endlessly playing Zombie Ate My Neighbors and Rampage as a kid with friends were great.

I was in high school at the launch of the OG Xbox and my friends and I would take over my parents detached garage all weekend long with 4 Xbox's and 4 TV's and LAN Halo. Tons of Halo and Mountain Dew Code Red being consumed.

EDIT: I would also like to include some of the most memorable times I have ever beaten games. Nothing special happening but just the games themselves left a huge impact on me and defined my gaming habits that I have now. The list of games: Halo (Xbox), Silent Hill (PS1), King's Field 2 (PS1), Shenmue (Dreamcast), Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (PC), Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis), Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Genesis), Clash at Demonhead (NES), Jet Set Radio Future (Xbox), Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2), Grandia 2 (Dreamcast), Diablo (PC) and Age of Empires 2 (PC).

I think I was 4th or 5th grade when I playing the original Pokemon Gold Version when I found a Shiny Slugma on Cycling Road and I couldn't catch it because I didn't have any Pokeballs!
I had beaten Red I don't know how many times at that point and I caught all the base form Pokemon and planned to just evolve them all to complete the Pokedex; I thought I didn't need Pokeballs anymore.

Another time, I was playing Fallout: New Vegas at my buddies' house and I was going a mission for the NCR that required me to infiltrate a Caesar's Legion camp. I put the Legion uniform, snuck into the camp, and completed the objective with relative ease. When I fast-traveled back to the NCR camp, everyone freaked out and started attacking me for no reason. So I ran out of the camp and when I switched from First-Person to Third-Person view, I realized that I forgot to change out of the Caesar's Legion uniform.

@RancidVomit86 your mention of Diablo brings up some fond memories from a few years ago when D3 came out. I LOVED Diablo 1 & 2.. they were some of my favorite games ever.
Diablo 3 is a POS. God that game made me hate blizzard for ruining one of the best franchises ever. I had to use that darkD3 because i couldn't stand how they turned a gritty realistic styled game into a bubble gum cartoon where Cain dies to a butterfly attack...
BUT! The real world auction house.. oh man that was the best.. that made the game fun... it was a terrible game that was really not fun and i quit as soon as they removed the auction house but i had a blast while it lasted.

I made somewhere around $3-400.. i LOVED going to work overnight for 12 hours and coming home to see i made money.. it was awesome seeing you had multiple sales. I think the most i made from a single item was $40-60 but it's hard to remember, maybe it was even more.. i had a lot of nice sales.

I used to laugh at my co workers who were not making money at all.. i mean it was easy for anyone to make money and they were keeping the best stuff they found and I'm thinking wtf. I kept gear that was pretty good, so i was able to efficiently farm items and gold, but i sold all the great finds asap.
I made a lot of money selling gold.. i had like a minimum amount i would keep on hand and all the other millions went straight to the auction.. it was so easy selling gold because you just had to undercut the cheapest price by 1 cent. Gradually inflation kept driving the price down on gold but still it was money.

At the end of it all, i made enough money to buy my first 27" 1440p glossy panel monitor and i was so so happy. When i got that monitor the quality blew me away and i thought it was just awesome i got a free monitor just for playing a game... to this day i always wish there was another game that would come out with a real world auction house that i could enjoy as much and make as much money or more.

To also add I made a trade with someone at school and it was a Gamecube for a PS2. He had a PS2 with 20 games and I purchased a Gamecube when the Mario Kart bundle came out. This kid at school really wanted a Gamecube so he offered me his PS2 and 20 games for my Gamecube with Mario Kart and Super Mario Sunshine. I accepted the trade and my next paycheck I just bought another Gamecube Mario Kart bundle. I felt like the trade was super one sided but he was the one who proposed it so I didn't feel too bad about it.

First, the obligatory Campfire Song (song)!

I'm not sure if this one really counts, but at my work Christmas party a couple of years ago, someone brought in their Playstation and one of the versions of Rock Band (can't remember which one). We had the full set-up (lead guitar, drums, vocals, and I was on bass) and we decided to prank the guy on vocals by choosing Rammstein's Du Hast. Needless to say the lyrics were butchered gloriously. XD That was a fun time.

In hindsight I probably should have stepped in and sang for him since I have some experience with German, but I was too self-conscious to sing in front of people. XD
