They sort of did... Wild Cowboys of Moo Mesa. I think it was released after that but only in arcades like a year after it. And it will never be rereleased because it was based on a cartoon probably nobody has heard of.
(I wouldn't have if I didn't see the actual machine around back in the day)
Lets all call it the "Capcom Effect"
A company with japanese origins and with a very distinctive style in the past, gets a taste western games, looses its identity and never gets it back.
Sure, solely banking on Kojima and his staff to save the sinking ship with Meta Gear Solid isnt the worst idea you could come up with, still, it might not be enough to save them as a whole.
To be perfectly honest: I LOVED the Lords of Shadow Trilogy and i still think its one of the best storys ive ever played. Yet, completely neglecting the fact, that people craved for a more traditional Castlevania for ages was one of the worst moves they could have made.
Mercury Steam felt the need to bridge that gap (with the more traditional Mirror of Fate and its Adventure style), but they couldnt meet the standart set by konami themselfes back in the day.
Konami, not unlike Capcom, didnt understand that what the mainstream industry depicted as "in" isnt always what your distinctive fanbase wants to see. Both Capcom and Konami were loved by their fans because of one, simple aspect: They stood true to their roots. They produced games that oozed japanese game development. With that gone, they became "one of many" and, to be quite honest, if im looking for a western developed game, im looking for a western developer, and not a japanese one pretending to be one.
@Hy8ogen Brave Fencer Musashi got a sequel on the PS2, called "Musashi: Samurai Legend" in 2005. So, make that 9 years waiting for a sequel

@Hy8ogen You think so ? I really loved the game actually. To be honest, way more than the PS1 game actually. The biggest gripe i had with it was the absence of a NG+ function, which rendered side missions and late game leveling kinda pointless.
But oh well, my taste in games is generally rather weird

Nintendo systems deserve more Metal Gear Solid games. Not just MGS: TS and Snake Eater 3D.
But apparently those are the best 2 MGS games at least (not necessarily 3DS version but I don't know about the original MGS3!) so there's that I guess.

No, I liked it a lot, too. I dunno what H8trs going on about...
@Einherjar I absolutely agree with everything, except for one thing: Konami themselves barely had a real fanbase of their own. Their IP's, however, had that much more of one. But these fanbases also confuse me a lot at times.
The Castlevania fanbase, for example, scolded Konami for almost every title after Rondo/Symphony for various reasons not related to gameplay or quality in any way. I can imagine them being horribly confused as to what people actually want.
And the Metal Gear fans are at the mercy of Kojima, anyway (because nobody tells Kojima what to do without consequences). Konami barely had any influence on Kojima's design decisions (Raiden in MGS2 is a great example for that).
But with all that said, there's still no denying that Konami gleefully digs its own grave. And I fear that not even MGS5 will be able to save them, if the hype and sales comparison of MGS4 is any indication.
@Kaze_Memaryu Yup, absolutely right.
Metal Gear releases always were something...different. Kojima always pulled a hoax or two to mystify the upcomming game release but i fear, that this practice is running thin, as thin as peoples patience actually.
As much as i hate people using the phrase "they need to go with the time" this is a perfect example for not doing this.
They should have learned by now, that people react pretty badly to marketing stunts like that. To the lack of pre release information, clouded release dates, intentional title confusion etc. They should have learned that people these days prefer a much cleaner release schedule and less confusion.
Just look at Nintendos recent E3 conference. It was exactly that: No frills, no distractions just games. If they had a release date, they gave a release date.
Thats what people want, and thats why i feel that MGSV will face a rude awakening once it is released.
