Topic: Is the PS2 ever going to be removed from stores?

Seriously (sorry if this thread exists), Sony doesn't have plans to rid the retail market of the world's best-selling console. Just look how the PS3 Slim doesn't have PS2 support, they want to sell more PS2s. Don't get me wrong, the PS2 is a great console, on my top 10 consoles (probably about #6). I just really wonder when it's finally going to be removed from store shelves.

Yeah that one has me stumped too. The Gamecube and original X box were pulled from shelves almost the same week as their successors were released. Surely the PS3 has been out long enough to consider PS2 an outdated system.

It will when it stops making retailers money.

Aren't they still making games for it? It's probably just crappy movie based games though.

The somewhat sad and unsurprising truth;

Yes, that's about it, some sports games, but that's about it. Movies and sports games are really all they still make for the aging console.

The last major game that was released for PS2 was I think that port of that Syphon Filter PSP game last summer.

It's affordability is another huge factor in it's continuing success. There is no denying that the PS2 played host to a myriad of exceptional titles, and a lot of these are still available on the shelves.

I think it is great they continue to retail it, as it provides everyone with the opportunity to snap up some gems that will be remembered fondly by all who have access to them.

Well yeah, it's inevitable that one day it will be removed. I mean, it won't stay on forever. But I'm kinda glad they're still alive, because I wanna get one sometime >:3

The thing though is that during that Gen PS2 outsold the Xbox and Gamecube. Most Xbox games at the time like GTA Vice City for example were ports of the PS2 version and the Gamecube well I wont get started there. Also the thing that made the PS2 so popular was the fact that you could play DVDs unlike the GC and without having to buy anything extra like the Xbox.

Also the PS2 had the better selling library yeah they could have added backwards capability like Nintendo did with the Wii and they did with the first shipments of the PS3, but at that time the PS3 was too overpriced compared to the Xbox 360 so alot of Sony loyal fans who couldnt afford the PS3 opted to buy the PS2 versions over the Xbox 360 version of games. So Sony figure what not make money of both groups the PS3 people and the PS2 people.

Bottom line its a marketing ploy basic supply and demand when the demand goes lower so will the supply. And it will keep going lower and lower till its gone.

Hopefully not. PS2 is one of my favorite systems, and I got like 3 new games for it in the past 2 months, so yeah, I'd like the games to keep in circulation.

yeah i bought a slim silver ps2 for 72 bucks figuring out that its not the games that where having problems it was the cause of my limited backwards compatiblity on the 80 gb ps3 model (now has 320 gb) for this reason alone has given me the chance to play catchup though theres being alot of ps2 hd collections going on for the ps3 i almost at one point regretted it

but at least it can sit alone side my gamecube and original xbox that i still have ps2 being the only one hooked up to my 32 inch sony hdtv along with my wii, ps3 and 360

According to Kotaku/Sony, the PS2 will have made $6 million this year and has sold over 150million units over it's lifetime. That's quite an accomplishment.

I say give it another year or so, maybe when we start hearing about the PS4 it'll finally vanish

Obviously it will. It'll be a sad day in gaming history when the only good console of the sixth gen is dead (The Gamecube was okay, but nothing special, the Xbox was mediocre). It's my favorite non-Nintendo system with an absolutely brilliant line-up of both first and third-party games and it has a huge legacy that no console except the SNES has been able to match. Here's to hoping next gen will have a console as good if not better then the PS2.

Now the question is, when is it going to die? I'm expecting it to be dead by this summer since the last title I can recall coming out is this March.

PS2 is the best, with a Great line-up of games.
and most of the game that comes out for the Wii are still coming to The PS2, like that NinjaTurtles Smash up game.
And alot of games that are on The PS2, are now coming to the Wii, like Okami.

Only if PS3 can play PS2 games, they wouldn't have to keep it alive.
I wonder why there still keeping it alive, if they already can port games to The PS3.
Maybe because, it still gets the same games The Wii gets....

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

The PS2 has many great games for it...and is probably best used for those middle budget games (not short enough for a DD title but not long enough for a current generation retail game).

I'd love to see a few brilliant games on it before it stops selling...after all, Guilty Gear and Atlus games have done the system service a few years back (2007/2009).
