Topic: Is it really necessary to have the rating on the front of the box?

I'm miffed about the policies requiring the rating of a game to be shown on the front of the box ... and the cartridge/disc ... and the instruction manual! It obscures the box art! Isn't it enough to have it shown on the back of the box with the rest of the information where any sensible person would know to look?!

A lot of retailers have the games in a glass case with the front of the game displayed (obv) so if someone wanted to know the rating then they'd hafta get a worker to open the case just to look. In my experience there are not enough workers around to open glass cases.

I'm guessing they do it as a liability in case a parent decides to buy a game for their kids, then come back and complain because they didn't realize what was in the game.

And as for having it on the game and the book itself its for the used game stores who alot of the times sell the games without the boxes.

It's a scientifically proven fact that nobody in the history of man has ever read the information on the bottom half of the back of a game box. Not even the people who wrote it. In fact, it's a mystery how it ever appeared there in the first place and commonly used in arguments both for and against the existence of God.

Also, I'd prefer it if everyone followed Konami's brilliant lead and put a box art in a box art.

Obviously, most retailers store software in a glass case or either on a shelf with the front of the box displayed so when a person walks by the rating is easily seen, thus saving people the time of having to pick up the software packaging and having to use energy to turn it around and read the back of the box as that is time consuming lol!

Besides, we've been placing the ESRB rating on the front of boxes this long so why should we not carry on doing with? It doesn't bother me none that it could be obstructing the box art as it is off in the corner anyway.

Exactly its not like they put it right on top of Mario's face or something. Honestly I dont even notice them anymore unless someone points it out.

Actually, it's not. The Supreme Court is currently deliberating on game box warning labels that would be MUCH worse than the ESRB logo (2 inch by 2 inch black "18+" markers, on the FRONT of the box). The ESRB standards are currently enforced by the gaming industry itself, as the console makers require those ratings and markings in order to obtain license for games on said platforms.

Anyway, I don't see why this is a problem. If anything, I wish movie ratings were half as easy to know in the store. They're usually buried on the back on the box only, and generally include nothing but the letter rating, giving you no clue what content inspired the rating.

Of course, it's also worth pointing out that since this is an industry standard, box art design tends to take the ESRB logo into account, making sure there's really nothing worth seeing behind it.

Because I'm sick of it, and I'm probably not the only one in the world, even if I am the only one on the board.

They should at least leave the rating off the cover of the instruction manual though. Posting the rating on the instruction manuel's cover is overkill and unnecessary, because a rating isn't going to stop someone from looking into a booklet.

Nail on the head. No matter how easy it is to see what the rating entails (since it tells you right on the front, with more detail on the back), people still don't get it. It's like watching like that girl from 1984 that would just fall asleep whenever he talked about certain things from the past. Perhaps a little obscure a reference, but some people out there...

I don't really see the problem with it. We've had game ratings on boxes for about 15 years now, does it really bother you that much?
