Topic: Installing SteamOS

Hi guys, wondering if any of you guys on NintendoLife are PC nuts and have already attempted this.

I am trying to install the SteamOS beta on a new SSD I bought. I have Windows 7 on another SSD (as well as a hard drive for storage). I want to test it out and see its gaming performance (and to see what Linux is all about). Is it possible to install it on the new SSD separate from Windows 7 without erasing anything on the Windows 7 SSD or hard drive? It says on the Steam website that both installation methods erase EVERYTHING.

I have tried to install Ubuntu on it instead, but have had not much luck. The first time it booted fine, and would NEVER boot after that. After reinstallation, it will boot to the login screen, where the mouse and keyboard would not work and then freezes anyway after 5 seconds.

Any information would be appreciated. I know how to work Windows to an extend but have never tried Linux before.

hm... can't you try the dual boot trick?(if not they messed up with the steam OS)
I'll try to do it later this week, oh I don't know about Steam OS but keep in mind that most Linux based OSes need you to know a little of shell scripting and such things
changed my mind I'll try to do it today, if it works out I'll tell you how to do it!

ok after some research, the current version of Steam OS will wipe windows completely, there's currently no other choice, it only plays games that work on Linux(not many) and it only works with NVidia graphic cards anything else still won't work for the graphics.... it's better to either wait for the final release or just install Ubuntu :/

Cheers for the research, I had spotted that an update recently for steam OS allowed dual booting and support for Intel and AMD graphics, but I wasn't so sure. Here's where I found this information.

I think I'll try reinstalling Ubuntu on my USB stick (I think that might be the problem, because I followed a guide installing it and reinstalled it) and then install it onto the SSD. If I can't install it, looks like I will have to wait for an official SteamOS release.
