Topic: In the mood for a platformer? Like Castlevania? Check my demo out!!!!

I know I've been flooding chat with messages/frustrations lately regarding this game (soo many bugs that needed fixing ) but all annoyances come to an end.

The Quest Against Monsters demo is officially out. It's kinda Faxanadu-ey, with some Castlevania in there and a dash of Zelda 2.

Most of the first area (the mountanside) is playable, along with the first boss. 3 different BGMs from the final game are present, as are some sound effects (may or not be placeholders--we'll see). Regardless, if you like walking side to side, jumping on platforms, and looking for breakable walls and hidden powerups, you just might find a few things to like in this game.

To download, visit the splash page: http://noret.info/dan-bisciglia/qamsplashpage.html - the download link is at the bottom.

Playable with Keyboard only at this point--joystick support will be added in the final release.

@mods - if this is in anyway uncool/advertising/whatever and is inappropriate, please let me know. I'm assuming, since it's a free game and this is a message board, that this is perfectly acceptable and no different than posting any other created works. Still, please let me know if I'm stepping on any toes.

**EDIT - saving/loading can cause some kinda weird bugs...I'd use Slot 1 only at the moment. Slot 4 in specific can do some weird things to the game, esp. if loading from the pre-boss savepoint**

it's kinda toeing the line, but i'm sure you got some kind of go-ahead from an admin before posting this, yes?

edit: since it seems you've locked this thread (or i didn't lock it anyway, lol), don't forget to put a link to the demo into your sig! your sig is much more visible than one single forum post :3

I dunno about go ahead, but I've flung so many messages at chat with you there that I figure someone woulda told me to hush up by now!

I should know by now to just write @tbd instead of @mods

EDIT: I certainly didn't lock it...I don't even know how to go about locking it....an unlock would be appreciated, since I can't seem to do that either.

sry to double-post, but A) yay it's open again!

and B) for whatever reason, saved data only carries over until you X out of the program....I'm not sure why this is given that the .ini is part of the .exe and should be updating before it closes....but yeah; if you save, it can only be loaded until you turn the game off. Sorry I'll fix it as soon as possible and upload the fix...still very beatable though--I think I clocked just over 2 minutes earlier, all 5 keys/4 powerups, boss killed

and I guess C) there are some issues with the boss cheap-shotting you between screens...these counters will be addressed at some point, but not as quickly as the save/load issue.

LOL Swerd your sig. I see a major improvement in it.

I'll give the game a go later on. I miss me some old school action platforming.

Hey, you made this in MMF2? Very cool, kinda makes me want to dig out my old copy. Nice game anyway, it's got a bit of a Knytt Stories vibe to it.
You can't save the ini file into the exe, you'll have to save the game using an external .ini file. Which does mean that people will be able to very easily modify their savegames (it's just text), so you might want to look into saving the game as a binary file instead.

I keep missing the cool stuff going on in chat, need to start using it more often D:

oh lol, i'd forgotten about that -- way back users were able to lock their own posts, but that feature was removed iirc. my bad :3

either way, good to see it back open... i'm assuming now permissions have been requested and granted if they hadn't been before. :3 with any luck, i'll be able to download it myself sometime this week and give it a shot.

@tbd - nope...actually this was unlocked completely without my request...at least officially. Thanks, beneficial Nintendo Life deity!

@Raylax - wow, another mmf user! Nice!

I wasn't aware that including external files didn't include the text file in the .exe...I suppose it was a little forward of me to assume it worked like including music files, but yeah...that sucks. Regardless, that's still not too difficult of a fix. I appreciate the heads up man.

I dunno if you noticed, but I went out of my way to custom-make everything. I'm trying to make it look as original-game as possible, as most mmf games I play just have this general sameness to them.

In case anyone wants them, I figured I'd post my couple youtube vids including 2 of the songs from the soundtrack as well.

Yeah. Music, graphics and extensions are all compiled inside the .exe, but anything else, especially things you plan to write data to, has to be an external file (there's good reasons for that, but I won't bore you with the jargon). And, nice that you've customed everything, can get a bit boring seeing MMF2 games just using the library music and cut-and-paste sprites all the time.

Now get some cool backgrounds on it.

@Ray - man every attempt I've made at a background so far has ended up....let's just say bad. Granted, My art chops have been getting a bit better as I go so maybe I'll gain the abilities necessary...but don't hold your breath or you might pass out.

@slap - thanks as always You gotta try for the 2-minute full victory--try ducking+attacking, then standing up quickly to cancel out your attack and then standing + attacking. You can up your swipes per second a bit--it pretty much guarantees one fire-crate only, three drops for the Angry Oak kill. I appreciate the kind words about the music!

@SM - you can play on mac if you have WINE...it's a windows emulator but requires the Apple developer SDK....not ideal I know, but you can thank Apple for their burning desire not to give any incentive to develop for their platforms That and mmf2dev makes .exes upon compile....my only option would be to pay the rip-off price for the flash exporter and put it online...sadly clickteam are pretty greedy in terms of pricing and i can't see that happening.

Sorry bro. On the bright side, the oldest, crappiest PC you could find could probably still run this with flying colors.... Seriously like Etch-a-sketch-era PCs could run this

Sigh Yet another Indie platformer. Even a dating sim would've more appealing to me. I might still give it a shot, but not right now (probably after I find a good dating sim).

Objection

Tried it out for a few minutes. What program are you using?

Anyway, I'd suggest trying to get the second enemy type (the plant thing that shoots stuff left then right in an arc) to have somewhat random aiming or to follow the character somewhat, its a little too easy most of the time to just stand next to it.

I'm also not in love with the current jump control/float level, but that may just be me.

I also think HP items might need to be given out at a better ratio. I got several at the beginnign and then none...for several screens until I eventually died. It was kinda weird.

Hope this helps. Keep at it!

@ob - multimedia fusion..nice little program with a metric ton of 2d flexibility. I'm a pretty big fan--used it for simulation programming for work and started branching out into entire mini-project design...this is my most ambitious project so far in terms of solo-mode. I was actually toying with the idea of tying item spawn probabilities with remaining health/magic...might do that. As for the jump physics...I personally think that with a bit of time you might grow to like them. I wanted pretty much instant start/stop for that full mid-air control Megaman feel...the gravity is kinda harsh though--might get a mini retool before the full version release (but I don't wanna redo jump limits/etc. since I've crafted some pretty devious platforming with it in some of the later areas.) Thanks for the feedback.

@Mickey - I know, I know, it's an overdone indie-typed project...I'm trying to do a bit of cut-above level design/structure in terms of most entries to the genre. I totally get that its overexposure in the indie community could instantly make it not-your-cup-of-tea though...Still, I hope you give it a try some time.

Glad so many people have checked it out!

@Swerd.... to me it feel a whole lot more like Metroid than Castlevania, but that is just me. I do like the feel of the jumping mechanics and realized that there are a lot of placed I cant jump too and Im guessing that is "yet" of course Im sure. As for the speed run, Im actually not a speed runner, I love old school gaming (spent like 2 hours yesterday playing Vice: Project Doom and The Journey to Silius on the NES) and adore bullet hell shooters, but I like to take my time and enjoy games, I get really pissed off when trying to speed run things lol.

I love it! I strongly encourage you to keep going on this. Like slapshot said, It's a lot more like Metroid than Castlevania, but that is not at all a bad thing.
