Topic: impressions of Marcus PSP ad campaign?

@J.K.: I'm gonna presume that message was directed at me, at least partially. Marcus does remind me of one of those kids on XBL that talk talk talk talk talk talk talk. I think teens would be too cool to buy into that, so I'm assuming he's marketed to even younger crowds, younger than he is, they're the only ones who might think he's cool or identify with him. The ads though, I just don't think they're very well done.

You're right that Sony screwed themselves, but it sucks that we, owners of Sony products, have to come along for the ride. It is always Sony's arrogance that leads to their problems.

Anyways, the last thing I wanted to address is that there's no official confirmation of NEC's TG16 or SNK truly coming, the PSP firmware update was worldwide if that is what you're going on and it wouldn't be the first time Sony hasn't released something here that they have listed in the PSP OS, like the camera. I do hope they release some good TG16 and Neo games here though, but I wouldn't wish too hard for great releases since they are not so great at securing PS1 releases.

What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.

General comment not just directed at you but anyone in general who thought he was totally ineffective. Sure he turns you off, and he'll turn some others too off, but yet even more people out there will get an eye on the ad and follow it to some degree that might sway a buy and that's what matters...awareness.

And yes Sony's arrogance has whipped their stupid hard this time around. They used to goad Nintendo for going too over the edge with it, but hell Sony has become the king of the Lemmings in respect to that. $600 for a system being 'too cheap' and that 'it can do everything' but they remove a few little things. Then they say portable, PLAYSTATION, it has to sell as Gameboy and DS is for kids and people don't want dinky on the go anymore. And following that they over charge for it, then decide to NOT ask people to make games for it by the (them) admitted lack of need to since developers flock to Playstation because it is what it is. Yeah that worked great considering a good span of like a 1 1/2 years went where nearly no one made a damn thing for the system outside of a few dev'rs and they had to go around on a worldwide lips to tour to get more stuff made. Yeah we suffer for it, but when things work out, they make a lot of stuff sadly Nintendo owners (also like us) get screwed out of due to childish third party penis envy and other stupidity that forces us to go multi-console.

I think the new PSP ads suck. Kevin Butler is funny because he's a middle aged corporate exec type acting like an immature hardcore gamer stereotype. That's funny, that's not something we've seen before. This new kid though, it's kind of racist really. It smells of blackface to me, white people finding black kids who act like little homies funny. He's a little stereotype with his sneakers up on Butlers desk practically talking jive like those guys from the movie Airplane. It's like his whole shtick revolves around being a little black kid acting like a immature black male stereotype. Besides, I think we've moved past the sassy kid being amusing to the younger set phase after the Bart Simpson wave in the early 90's. He might as well be wearing cheap sunglasses, with a backwards hat, riding on a skateboard with some cheesy catch phrase. It's so hideously 90's and the Kevin Butler ads are so modern. They don't gel together.

The whole "I'm a hardcore urban kid and others like me should buy a PSP" is very annoying. The first commercial somehow seemed like it was insulting PSP users. I guess it's because it's specifically geared toward kids but came across as more "ghetto" than kid friendly yet at the same time says nothing of the core PSP demographic. Kevin Butler should just advertise all things Playstation.

Obviously the girl hasn't done any research. The 3DS itself is on par with the Wii, yet has shaders, lighting effects, and other pixel based hard wired stuff into the parts that the Wii doesn't do but PS3 and 360 do. PSP barely comes up to the PS2 in capability and still falls a little short, so not quite sure where that comparison is coming from other than fantasyland.

Hmm... I've seen a bunch of your posts over the past couple of days, and many of them have been negative and dismissive. But this time it's different and you are coming off as a massive jerk. "The girl" has a username, so why don't you use it? More importantly, she is just as entitled to hold and express her opinion as you are -- and many people agree that what has been shown so far doesn't do much to blow the PSP away.

If you want to disagree, that's fine... but don't make it a personal attack. And in the meantime I really think you should apologize, because that post crossed the line from expressing an opinion to belittling others (who really didn't deserve it).

ejamer, the reason I said that is that I have posted a few times here about the abilities of the system which I get from people who are working with the hardware, that's why I was short about it. Yes she is entitled to an opinion of course, and I'm entitled to leak a few tidbits when I'm given them as long as I don't get the source in trouble. I never insulted her, never made it personal, nothing, just said 'the girl' and you're taking offense to it. She may feel it doesn't do much to blow the PSP away, that's fine, hell I own and enjoy mine more than the DS in a good while too. But the fact remains that the 3DS hardware is as capable basically of the Wii, and the Wii is up the ladder a bit from the PS2 and PSP barely can meet a majority of the power of the PS2 with a small handful of games taxing the hardware quite a bit and that's at a base level as the 3DS has some filters, shaders, and pixel/light tricks you can't get off the Wii and can from the PS3 I have.

Waveboy: Thanks. Second time I've caught heat for being abrasive today as someone emailed me because I supposedly got too hard on some lefties who refused to understand how unreasonable it is to redesign hand held gaming systems to their needs when they're just 7% of the population. I am a former game developer in another life nearly a decade ago and was game media off/on since (off for now) and understand what the costs vs benefits are and there's good reason why you don't see 2 analogs and other needs put into handheld devices and it comes down to the dollar (and battery life too.) I feel sorry for those guys as it's as bad as trying for most righties using their left if they got like a broken arm/hand and can't use it -- it sucks. Why I got abrasive there was when that was explained by a few of us, it kept going back to 'unfair' 'lets all protest' 'lets do angry emails' 'make online petitions' and it won't make a difference as companies just won't listen and rarely do so the complaining just gets old. :

J.K.:
If it's the second time you're catching heat for sounding abrasive then maybe it's time to pause and reflect. Having an opinion is fine, and I'm sure that your opinion is a great one. But how you express an opinion matters, and needlessly putting others down in the process doesn't benefit anyone (although it does tend to frame you and your comments in a bad light).

This would matter less to me if I felt your opinion wasn't worth hearing. In that case I would just ignore you outright... but when things that are worth reading get lost behind unnecessary negative or personal comments, the message suffers.

Anyway, people are free to disagree. I'm just calling it as I see it.

ejamer no offense but I'd rather not. I know what I'm doing when I write stuff, it's thought out. If one thing I'll happily never be accused of is being or writing politically correct to make every world a fuzzy place where reality melts into fantasy.

Thanks for saying at least I made a good point, even if I'm rough about it, but I'm blunt, truthful, and to the point and it pisses some off, gives other laughs, but usually it just works for me so I gave up years ago fearing who won't like it as you can't win all the time.

Actually no since the ad campaign creates in my opinion a level of hate more towards the PSP then ever before besides that Seth Green in DS advertisement clearly blows this nonsense away.

I'm going to lock this thread now as it's run its course.

J.K. - Yep, you're entitled to your opinion, but when site staff make a request it's in everyone's interests for you to heed it. There's a big difference between being courteous and considerate and going off the deep end and talking about "making the world a fuzzy place".
