I love Mario games simply because they play so well, it just feels great. Platforming at it's best, be it 2d or 3d games.
I don't have all of them but i have;
SMB 1, 2 and 3 for the NES.
SMS for GC.
NSMB DS.
SMG 1 and 2 for the Wii.
SM3DL and NSMB2 for the 3DS.
I used to have Mario 64 but unfortunately i sold it a long time ago. I do have it on Wii's VC but that's not "real" imo, i prefer the real physical thing, i know i'm weird
Well, if you consider yourself a huge Mario Fan, then you are. If you don't consider yourself a huge Mario Fan, then you're not.
Your point of reference is your reality.
If you want to show others than you are a huge mario fan than dress like it, act like it, or talk like it.
Otherwise, you can buy a huge fan and a huge mario doll and put em together and own a huge mario fan
I love Mario games. They're rock solid- the very definition of what a game should be. 100% entertainment from gameplay. No cut scenes, no meaningful story, no uber-realism, none of that. Just pure, unadulterated, rock-solid fun gameplay. But people always hate what's popular- it's what people do.
All have sinned and fall short of Gods glory. Wages of sin is death. Romans
God so loved the world He sent His only Son- whoever believes on Him has eternal life. Unless you believe, you will die in your sins. Whoever believes, rivers of living water flow within them. John

I can teach you how to be a true Mario fan, but I have to come up with an elaborate Disney-like musical number to teach you how to do it.
EDIT: probably something along these lines
name your elder son Mario and buy a reptile pet named Yoshi oh also make your son follow a strict diet of mushrooms, leaves, flowers and stars and allow him to eat cakes but only with a Princes

Or maybe they hate something because it isn't something they want and/or consider good. I, for instance, absolutely hate the fact that the main-line Mario games don't try to have a story. I like cutscenes. I like stories. I like games that put in effort in more areas than simply the gameplay. I play games because they allow me to interact with a world that I can't normally do in other mediums, something most Mario games seem to actively discourage. Thankfully the Mario RPGs exist. Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door are two of the best games I've ever played as a kid, because they take the Mario world that I always admired, and actually let me interact with it. I got to see parts of the Mario World I'd never seen before. I got to explore it, and get to know it, along with the people inside it. What always made these games good was the writing, how it always centered around your partners - you got to know them, their troubles, their dreams. Those really hit me, and it's such a shame that the later PM games decided to go a different Direction, the latest one barely having any story at all.
I don't know about you, but to me, Good gameplay is a dime a dozen. There are so many games that are fun at a basic level that it doesn't even matter to me anymore. It's basically a require to be a good game that pretty much anything half-decent can fullfill. It's not a selling point to me anymore. It doesn't have any impact on me either - All the enemies I fought, all the stages, all the bosses, they all just get muddled together in my head. Those moments don't stand out. What I do remember is the story - the things that happened, the characters I met, the places I saw, the little moments that made me smile. Those leave an impact on me. Those are the things I get to take away from every game I play.
You don't have to agree with me, but please don't dismiss others opinions and tastes so lightly. Just because they're your definition of a perfect game doesn't mean it should be everybody's, and just because their tastes don't fit yours doesn't mean that they're haters who are just hating something because it's the thing to do. Basically what you said their was that they didn't have a real opinion. But that is far from the truth, you just have to accept that others have different ideas of what a good game should be.
there also a rumor about the secret Miyamoto follower society they are said to always wear Mario caps and if you ever meet one of those never EVER say bowser at least that's what my friend told me....

E3 2014, Sony conference, countdown reaches 1.
Sprint onstage, in full Mario gear, a toolbox that's actually a boombox, do the Mario.
Then, and only then i may possibly think about calling you a Mario fan.
If you don't Wii U will die.
If you enjoy them and get sucked in, CONGRATULATIONS! You've become a Mario fan.
Continue to play the Mario games and be sure to get every one in your collection (excluding the awful ones like Mario is Missing and the CDi game). Played them all? GREAT! You're nearly there...!
Now play all the games and try to 100% them. All of them. If you need to take a break, play Mario Kart. Done that? You are now a HUGE Mario fan.
Or you could just play Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, and Super Mario 3D World. No one will question your loyalty. Just go on YouTube or Wikipedia for some background knowledge on the rest of the series.
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
